The rules of Random Banter
(Please follow these to ensure a safe and pleasant journey)

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

Now let the banter commence! :3

Indeed, but if it were her adult teeth which were hit that would've been worse. That said, having hairline fractures on one's teeth for a decade is very bad.

I almost exclusively play evil players. Actually, at the moment I've managed to get out of DMing this time and am playing a LN monk. ...This is going to be tricky for me... Evil is very fun, but for some people it is easy to be confused with 'being a bit of a meanie'.

Ouch. If I get into university, I am definitely going to try finding electronic versions of textbooks. I'm strong enough, but my back is not good.

I pretty much always go for the chaotic good, but as I'm a druid in my current campaign at the RPG club... I just decided to go full neutral. :smalltongue: It'll be a tough thing to play...

A lot of the books are available electronically, but I cant concentrate on the screen too well. Only use them when the library copies are all taken of said book or I'm getting too close to the deadline.

She has not because all the times we've scheduled, she's just not gone. I believe that this time we're actually going to drag her in chains to do it (not literally, of course, but you know what I mean).

Emmy, what's the longest time you've gone without coffee as an adult?

Hmm...what stage of adult? Because the amount has increased over the years (and with not drinking so much soft drinks since college the first time). But unless something really unexpected happens, or I'm out running around or something or staying with family, generally I have my first cup of coffee ~7am and the last ~noon?

Unless I've made a second (or third) pot or I'm trying to stay up late to get homework done or something...

So, I'd say my coffee levels are fairly consistent 24 hours a day. :smallwink:

I don't have an adjective for this, actually. huh.

Nasty? Crazy? No...

Give me two hours and a bit, the test that's about to start will be over so I can explain.

Okay, explaining.
Firstly, the last unit we learned before midterms was electromagnetic fields. We rush through this in two classes. He tells everyone that it won't have its own test due to lack of time, but it will be on the midterm, so study accordingly. He hands out practice tests as a study aid. They show a roughly even distribution across all units.

Day of the actual test (Monday). We get the test. Nothing at all on rotational motion (probably what I studied most, as it was one of the harder ones. Everyone else agreed when we learned it that it was really hard - not just me - so they probably also studied it a lot.) Half of the test is on electromagnetic fields. Of course, nobody's ready for this, because there's a limited amount of time in which to study and everyone expected there would be a more even amount.

The midterm is twice the length of a normal test.

Yeah... so it's not that there's no test on it (but it'll be on the midterm). The midterm was the test on it, just with more review questions on previous units than normal.

I swear this guy gets off on having the "most difficult class".

We got our circuit almost running perfectly now due to... black magic. And magic numbers. Seriously, when we set our maximum sampling frequency to 49 Hz, it works almost perfectly (fails to trigger on roughly 1-2‰ of the signals), but on 46 Hz, it samples a majority of the numbers to no signal at all. The general idea is that the next time she messes up, that's happening. Or we're putting her in a psyche ward. I don't know all the details.

Hasn't that been the general idea the last few times she's pulled things?

How much worse than this does she have to get? :smallconfused:

Not exactly...

Meaning "principal" is early 15c. Of letters, "upper case," from late 14c. A capital crime (1520s) is one that affects the life or "head;" capital had a sense of "deadly, mortal" from late 14c. in English, a sense also found in Latin. The felt connection between "head" and "life, mortality" also existed in Old English: e.g. heafodgilt "deadly sin, capital offense," heafdes þolian "to forfeit life." Capital punishment was in Blackstone (1765) and classical Latin capitis poena.

Your beard is ginger? :smalleek::smallconfused: I mean, just about every white guy I've ever known has had a few ginger hairs in his beard...

It's actually very common to have either a full or half ginger beard, especially men who have dark hair. Pretty much all the dark haired guys I know here in Scotland have that, some English too. Apparently even if you don't get the fiery hair, the ginger beard gene lingers on strong.

As a wee lad I had my mother's ginger hair and my father's curly locks. As I aged, the hair became more wavy like my mother's and darkened rather dramatically to something like my father's.

The odd thing, to me, isn't that the beard comes in ginger, but that my dad, who is full blooded Italian, has ginger genes to give...

Off the top of my head, to be honest, I don't know any. I don't even know what the taxonomical difference between parakeets or parrots are! I specialize quite narrowly in budgie. I think when someone says parakeet in the US they just mean budgie.

As Rain Dragon has evinced with Storm, or as a co-worker of mine has with his two, cockatiels make very dear companions also. I have no experience with any other domestic birds.

Please post pictures of your friend's decision, possibly that give some clue to their location that I might the more expeditiously kidnap them for my own use.

Done it, though not for a whole campaign. It takes a lot of work to make it seem creative and interesting, and not just "oh look a bunch of fire-themed monsters." Very easy to come off as trite though.

I recommend themed hazards. Grabby roots work nicely, or sudden heavy winds. Stuff like that.

Unless you feel like cutting out every epithet in the language that is based off something that is actually clinically diagnosable, I see no point in not using just one such name.

Wait a second, are you saying this on the same page as you call Asta out on ageism? You realise that just as one may take offense in having one's age being described by such stupid behaviour as LaLa's sister is displaying, someone may take equal offense in having his or her diagnosis being described by the same...

Well, I'm only crazy in two ways (that I can think of off the top of my head): My love of sour patch kids and my obsession with Pentatonix. I eat about *checks labels for first time ever*... wow, a POUND A WEEK. Of sour patch kids. I may need to reevaluate this. And my Pentaholicism is well known. But I don't think either of those things would really affect a relationship that much.

Yes... yes, please... I have to know...

Alright then. While in taste alone they are slightly inferior to the peanut, the cashew makes up for this in several other ways. The first of these is the texture. The cashew is ever so slightly softer than the average peanut, and so becomes a more pleasing mush between the molars. The taste of the cashew also synergizes more with salt than the peanut does, making them a delicious addition to any mix of nuts.

WarKitty

Ditto on the terminology. I do think it's best to avoid using terms that imply clinical diagnoses - not in the least because those with such are often tarnished unfairly by them.

The idea was to have a plot where the BBEG's going around to all the elemental temples to harness the power of the elements and take over the world. (I just haven't figured out how) The theme dungeons would be:

*A Venice-inspired city with the water dungeon in the sewers.
*An underground dwarf city with a pyramid-shaped crypt-themed earth dungeon
*An active volcano for a potentially final dungeon
*An air dungeon high atop a mountain, inspired by the Eyrie from Game of Thrones. Probably most of that adventure would be the hike up. The dungeon itself would be fairly desolate. Just an air shrine.

Though that game has it's elemental dungeons be a lot more simple. And the earth dungeon was basically an undead dungeon.

How important are elements in general to your world? This works better if elemental magic is a big deal overall. I've had problems in D&D because elements tend not to be a big deal there, so an elemental dungeon can feel trite.

It'd be in Legend, so the elements are a bigger deal, even if just because of the smaller amount of spells available. Also, the system will make it easier to create a decent variety of element-themed traps and enemies, since so much of the fluff is up to you.

You should play the first Final Fantasy game :smallwink:

Come to think of it, the idea's similar to FFI. It's just that instead of the heroes collecting the gems to save the world, the villain's doing so to destroy it.

That is the tangram answer for a short shape. I think her puzzle was the long shape and then the long sides of the biggest triangles have to be the top and the bottom of the shape and the other pieces are the left and the right.

Awesome. What sort of show if I may ask?

I almost exclusively play evil players. Actually, at the moment I've managed to get out of DMing this time and am playing a LN monk. ...This is going to be tricky for me... Evil is very fun, but for some people it is easy to be confused with 'being a bit of a meanie'.

Snarky Puppy - they're a jazz/fusion sort of group with some really cool stuff. Here's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPQeSvQr12M) one of my favorites.

Evil is fun. I've found that it's hard to maintain an evil feel for a character and not devolve into stupidly destructive stuff, though. It takes a lot of effort to play someone as distinctly evil that isn't a murder-hobo. I played a LE cleric a while back, although he probably would have been better described as NE.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the third is a requirement for the first in the long run, it's just that people are too cheap to realise it...

Oh, how come this weird occation? :smallconfused:

Technically it depends on the cost of the bus, but yes.

I was having some difficulty finding myself a ride back from the show I'm going to, and I'm not paying ~$80 for cab fare or ~$60 for a hotel if I can just stay up a few extra hours. That said, I've since found myself a ride (assuming he doesn't flake out - I don't think he will), and I'll gladly pay ~$20 to not stand out in the cold for several hours.

That sounds. Exactly like me. I tend to Chaotic Good, because I am quite chaotic as a person, and I find it's then easier to RP the character. But when I don't it's usually TN.

My characters tend towards TN or LN, I think, because that's about how I am as a person most of the time. I've had fun playing good and evil characters, and my good characters have tended to be more lawful, while my evil characters have tended to be more chaotic (although not all of them).

EXCELLENT, COLONEL. LET IT ALSO BE KNOWN THAT I FEEL STRONGLY ENOUGH TO HOLD SHIFT RATHER THAN MERELY USE CAPITALSLOCK.

INDEED. SHIFT IS SUPERIOR. LET THAT DISTASTEFUL KEY BE AND SHIIIIIIIIIIFT.

...I lost weight first year. >.>

MOAR CAPITALS!

I would trade you. I've had none today, and I'm feeling the effects already...

Clearly something has gone wrong here, since my beard's hairs appear to only be around 25-33% ginger with around 5-10% blond.

Eh, my dad's beard is similarly mixed (colour-wise), although it's got grey instead of blonde, so it's more like red/brown/black/grey.

Interesting. I find this idea much better than the original LoZ-esque elemental temples, while still preserving the mechanical feel of it. I'd be careful not to overplay the elementy-ness of it, unless you think your players will enjoy that.

It's a rather cool concept, though. I'd be interested in hearing how it goes.

The only alignment-behaviours I don't frequently display are CG and CE, so I don't ever really have people call me those. I get called LE and LN a lot, especially as a DM.

Playing nice evil characters (or evil characters that are genuinely being nice) always throws players for a loop. :smallamused:

The only one that would be overtly elemental is the fire dungeon, and maybe air. The idea for the world is that the four elements control everything. And with that theme, there are shrines around the world where the elemental power is centered. The BBEG's goal is to use those shrines to take over the world somehow. (I already know that magic gems will be involved) I also have a plot twist planned that:

Spirit is a fifth element, humans are spirit elementals, and the players' homeworld is actually the spirit temple.

It takes me more effort to play someone who is Good without being boring Mr Goody Two Shoes all of the time. Though a solid character profile really helps with adding interest to the character.

I'd like to vent about competitive gaming. It irritates me. Because there are so many people who pour money into TCGs, it makes it harder to win if you're a casual player who has a single deck that might not even be that good. Or anyone in a game like SSBB who knows all the awesome tricks, but doesn't know how to tone it down and go easy on casual gamers. It's not that I want to win; it's just that I want to feel like my losses aren't predetermined. I want a chance at winning.

Hmm. Magic players should be able to turn things down, but it really depends on how good they are. Someone may have sunk a lot of money in to their deck, but if they can't teach you how to play or make the game fun, what good are they really? (Although I guess that's a personal opinion.)

As for SSBB, I'm surprised. The items in that game generally make it so that even the most skilled players can be brought down with some luck. (There's a reason why they're banned from tourneys.) Hell, Kirby is banned. Give 'em a Ray Gun and you'll be ROFLstomping everyone.

I do this a lot with a group or one other person. One of my favorite theories that my friend and I came up with was that Avatar the Last Airbender was a D&D game with lots of homebrew content. Then we made jokes like DM of the Rings about different things that happened on the show. Like we thought the reason that Sokka had so many funny yet horrible things happen to him was that he was the only member of the gaming group who didn't play a caster class. Instead he played a fighter and the DM was punishing him for that choice.

A little bit of orange in the marinade really sets off chicken before it's made into fajitas, I always thought. Decided to try a smidge splashed onto the beef like you splash on a smidge of worchestershire or soy or tabasco while it's browning.

Once I started spicing the ground beef while it was cooking I never could turn back, I must admit. Doesn't really *feel* right to me to add the cayenne pepper to something after it's cooked. May just be all in my head, but I think the flavor imparts better to the meat in the cooking process, incorporating it more fully.

Order? Like online? :smallconfused: Huh. No, can't say that I know of anywhere you can order bear meat.

Orange Chicken, Lemon Chicken, Lemon Pepper Chicken, Lemon Butter sauce for seafood, apple sauce with pork, pork roasted in/with apple products, cranberry sauce, cherry sauces, various other fruit sauces...

Pork's pretty much the meat that's most made for pairing with fruit, whether sauces, sides, or what it's cooked in/with.

Mainly the trick is to match strengths. Delicate seafood flavors shouldn't go with anything stronger than fresh lemon. Orange beef can be good. Pork's a stronger flavor, and the cured versions are even stronger than that.

Orange Chicken, Lemon Chicken, Lemon Pepper Chicken, Lemon Butter sauce for seafood, apple sauce with pork, pork roasted in/with apple products, cranberry sauce, cherry sauces, various other fruit sauces...

Now I want meat with mojo marinade even more. :smallfrown: Funny that no one at the farmer's market with oranges thought of making home made.

So, I've made the executive decision to watch Warm Bodies, a romantic zombie comedy based on Romeo and Juliet, where the Romeo family side of things are zombies, and the Juliet side of things are the military trying to save the rest of humanity.

This movie is immediately worth the time watching it. The trailers present it as a stupid Twilight knock off. Instead it's a genuinely funny parody of that ****.

But I just had to quote on this. Yeah the trailers did not advertise this well. I second this, absolutely worth taking the time to see.

Hehe hi there Teddy. ^_^ *hugses* Sounds like you are having much fun in your classes. I'm glad you are enjoying them! Could you possibly explain Human-Computer interactions a bit? So next week it is on to the next adventure (couldn't make it over this week). The 5th Edition playtest was fun, and was going well, but we decided to take a break on it. We are taking up a totally different challenge now, going to try a campaign where they use the character of our last campaign, who are now deities. If it works, it will be great fun, but trying to make challenges for them will be insane. Also got a game I am running here, due to the same issues that kept me from bantering though I did not post in it for awhile. But now things are going well there, gestalt game with some interesting homebrew classes involved. And since I know that Deity game with my friends at home will take much preparation, we will also be trying this other game someone showed me, Don't Rest Your Head. It takes a lot less prep time, so it should be good fun on some weeks. :smalltongue: Oh, and in a game one of those friends is running, another gestalt game, things are going okay. HCI (not to be confused with HCl, which is a strong acid :smalltongue:) is a course intended to make us better at designing computer systems which are usable, rather than merely in the way, but since the whole field is pretty wide and since we've got a full department researching it here in Uppsala, it's more of an introductory course to the whole field, meaning many lecturers with rather different topics.

Most of it so far (we've only had 4 lectures) has been about cognition psychology, which studies how the human mind goes from stimuli to action, through perception and memory. It's a lot about how we sort out relevant data from the overwhelming flow of information, how we memorise it and recall it, how we make decisions and how we reason about those decisions. It's much conscious versus subconscious thinking, grouping together items in patterns, keeping all needed information in sight all the time to not have to rely on our working memory and maintaining consistency both to not confuse ourselves and to make it easier to spot anomalies whenever they appear.

Face-heel is a process normally only used for Wrestling. In the simplest terms, it's when a good (face) thing or person, becomes a bad (heel) thing or person. He's saying that you say the bard is dumb, but then that he did an awesome thing. So that's the face-heel. Or rather, since you went from "hate" to "like" it'd be a heel-face turn.

Well welcome here then! Enjoy the banter.

This is indeed 3.5 D&D. And that is certainly a possibility, at least for some of it. But I do intend them to fully make and play these powerful characters, it's part of the appeal plus having strange callbacks to the last adventure of theirs. The cosmology/divinity of my setting is kinda strange and still being formed, so there will be actual challenges to them, other than just other deities. :smalltongue:

That seems rather interesting! I want to be in a psychology class like this, might actually enjoy it. Formerly the idea of psychology just terrified me. But now...I could see some of that being in another class I might take here. But all that can really be applied to computers? Sound cool!

Hehehe, sounds like you've had fun with your games. And your (co-)players too! :3

And tell me more about Don't Rest Your Head! What type of game is it? :3

*hugs en masse*

The games have been very much fun. Haven't been having times like our first campaign, where I could rarely ever really challenge them. I have improved somewhat. :smalltongue:

Well, the cover describes it as "A Game of Insomnia in the Mad City". The whole point is the characters are driven to insomnia for some reason, and stay that way so long that they Awaken to this other world along ours, a world of madness, where they are chased by Nightmares and have to face their trials and demons to maybe be able to put themselves back together. Or just get horribly killed by a Nightmare, or go insane and turn into one themselves. :smallamused: It is played entirely with d6, the character creation is rather simple, and in some ways the story is driven and decided more by the players than by the DM, and there is a lot of debate and sometimes compromising on what a success or failure really does in this game. And our course one of the biggest things is do no, absolute do not, go to sleep. Don't rest your head.

You can’t sleep. It started like that for all of us, back when we were garden variety insomniacs.
Maybe you had nightmares – gods know we all do now – or maybe you just had problems that wouldn’t let you get a good night’s rest. Hell – maybe you were just over-caffeinated. It doesn’t matter. Whatever it was, eventually you got to a point where sleep became a choice, rather than a mandate … and then it just dropped off the list.
And then, and only then, something clicked.
That’s when you started noticing the extras. An extra door here or there. An extra window looking out onto a city packed with surplus buildings, hodgepodge towers standing shoulder to shoulder, roofs angling into one another. Clocks chiming the thirteenth hour and unfamiliar stars twinkling in the too-clear sky. Streets and alleys that weren’t there before, leading to late-night markets that sold things like laughter and indecision.
When you took a long walk down the streets of the Mad City, you stopped being a Sleeper and started being Awake.
But that click you heard wasn’t from the secret world snapping into place. It was the sound of the Nightmares flicking off the safety and pointing a gun at your head. When you crossed over you became a target. They can smell you now, if they get close enough. The Paper Boys are closing in, and you’d better pray you don’t become a headline.
You’re chum in the water, my friend, and it’s time you got ready for it – before the clock chimes thirteen again. You’re going to get tired, more tired than you ever have before, but mark my words: sleep isn’t just off the list now, it’s an outright enemy that’ll strip away your vitality and leave you vulnerable. There’s no going back, and from here on out, there’s just one simple rule that must dominate your life.
Stay Awake.
Don’t rest your head.

Is 'chasing the dragon' slang for something? Or 'dragon chasing us' or...?

So how does it go? I feel it is more polite to ask of others before speaking of my own happenings.

Ah, I didn't read through everything today, but skimmed. Instead of answering, I will just answer 'how does it go?' with 'well, how does it go for you?'

I had written an evil druid with a badger, but didn't play it because the 'save the badgers' thing started. I felt sorry for the badgers and decided said druid should be a neutral druid of badassery to save the badgers!

No? We... Don't? Aww...

Actually, I have no idea. But considering all of the stuff they built I'm sure either they have a lot of clients or charge a lot of money. Even with the fact that in both the movies they were only busy because lesser ghosts were drawn by larger supernatural phenomenon. (Or something to that effect.)

Well... I'd consider it at least.

Teddy was describing hug snow. It sounds like you could (with many layers of clothing on) sink right into it if you were to lie down. I imagine it would look like Teddy's cloud picture but with a lot of snow. Awww. (Cute)

Right, wrong word order. And the fact that I forgot the ethymology and half the definition. But I'm actually thinking about how Finn said druid was a stupid choice a day ago, and now says her druid is awesome. ;3

That seems rather interesting! I want to be in a psychology class like this, might actually enjoy it. Formerly the idea of psychology just terrified me. But now...I could see some of that being in another class I might take here. But all that can really be applied to computers? Sound cool!

Well, it isn't a psychology class, it's a computer science class, and I suspect that if you went the full way to cognitive psychology you'd probably drop the computer aspect. Plus, cognitive psychology is borderline (natural) science anyway...

This sounds interesting. Would perhaps make for a good, creepy, setting-driven horror game... :3

Teddy was describing hug snow. It sounds like you could (with many layers of clothing on) sink right into it if you were to lie down. I imagine it would look like Teddy's cloud picture but with a lot of snow. Awww. (Cute)

Hmm, well, it shapes quite well after your body if you lie right down on it and refrain from squirming around. Hugsnow is better described in terms of packing a snowball (which is called "hugging the snow" in Swedish). Most subzero snow will just fall between your fingers, or at best let itself be packed into a ball which will shatter once you throw it. Hugsnow is snow which lets you hug it into a proper snowball which can be given good aerodynamical properties and maintain integrity through its whole flight. :3

Ah, I see. That's interesting. I should've paid more attention, sorry.

My own love for snow is perhaps because I grew up in a place that never snowed. Though honestly, snowy weather is still very cold to me because I grew up in a tropical area, so going outside to properly hug snow into a snowball is not something I would do often so I can't say I know a lot about it. I'd freeze!

Nah, it's okay, I didn't really put that much effort into explaining it the first time. And I think I might've dropped a sentence in my second description, which makes it look awkward, but at least it doesn't change the meaning...

Hehehe... :3

Have you tried thicker clothes? That's my trick, at least...

Then again, I'm weird when it comes to temperature resistance. I'm perpetually cold, which most people around me are well aware of since I wear thick fleece jackets well into the summer (and even all the way through last summer, but last summer was unusually cold) and since I'm always content on those summer days when they can't do anything but complain about the warmth. Yet I thrive in the winter, and usually want it to be colder than others do, which at a cursory glance would seem contrary to my nature.

Now, as I said, worse cold can pretty much always be countered by thick clothes, and I'm well prepared on this front. But what's more important is that since I'm always cold, my mental fortitude is stronger than the most, and thus, I can withstand colder temperatures since I'm just more used to being cold...

I think you may have some troubles with replicating that last part, though...

Hm.

Some of the bits of that description remind me of City of Angles.
(other bits less so)
(might be just that I was reading it recently)
Buildings next to buildings, askew or aligned. Buildings sometimes intersecting buildings, for that matter. Walk down a hallway, end up in a ballroom, double glass doors to a subway station, third exit on the left goes to a dentist's office. Probably wouldn't want your cavities filled there, mind you.

There's no rhyme or reason to any of it -- we've got streets which lead to dead ends, roads which criss-cross and loop back around, highways which go nowhere. Literally nowhere, as in "anybody going down that road is not coming back." This is not a good place to wander off unless you like wandering off forever...

Nobody knows where the city came from. Nobody knows how we got here. Nobody knows why any of this is happening. But it's happening. The city exists. We are here now. It's growing every day, and bringing new people with it.

We live a life amidst the twisted yet familiar.

If we're going to survive this, if we're going to stay alive and thrive, we need to learn to live in the City of Angles.

Looking into Don't Rest Your Head now.

EDIT: Looked into it a little. Decided I don't want to look any farther into it while it's still dark out.

THE MOTHS HAVE RETURNED. >_>

AAAARHhgklf.

Honestly. Like. One and half days before I go to Finland for three weeks they start their stupid prancing about outside of the closet again. Go to hell, creatures. When I come back from Finland I'm finally gonna tell the letting agency that this place really needs fumigating. Harder to make them convince that the moths haven't come from me though, or, I dunno. Because they haven't. I told them last year that it was all handled, but clearly no...

I love your twist. A good, well-timed plot twist gives your players such perfect expressions.

I have decided that song is really awesome.

It takes me more effort to play someone who is Good without being boring Mr Goody Two Shoes all of the time. Though a solid character profile really helps with adding interest to the character.

One of my current players expects this, along with awesome plot hooks which I definitely cannot deliver. Oddly enough, even though the setting is a little macabre she's enjoying it. :smallconfused: Well, at least however poorly written it is not poorly executed which is always good news.

They've got a whole bunch of good stuff. Hell, they didn't play a single song I knew at the show, but it was pure, undiluted awesomeness nonetheless. :smallcool:

Yeah, I think that if the most important part of your character's personality is their alignment, then they're just going to end up being a caricature. With some characters (wantonly destructive CE minions, for example), fitting a caricature is perfectly fine, but it's not so great for a PC. I have the hardest time playing chaotic good, honestly... It's difficult for me to define how a CG character would act in most scenarios.

Indeed. I've yet to run into a place where my players have called me out on my BS plots mid-game. I don't think any of the ones that haven't been a DM before ever really appreciated how little/poorly I plan some things, but they seem to enjoy themselves anyway. :smallamused:

Or anyone in a game like SSBB who knows all the awesome tricks, but doesn't know how to tone it down and go easy on casual gamers. It's not that I want to win; it's just that I want to feel like my losses aren't predetermined. I want a chance at winning.

Brawl is awesome. I've got two or three people on the hall who could probably play "professionally" if they had the opportunity/time, and I can still win against them in matches. Just play against good people a lot, and you'll get much better. Some tricks take a bit to pick up.

Like, for example, I used to be horrible at air dodging. But there's a guy on the hall who nearly always plays as Pikachu, and trust me, that's probably the easiest way to learn how to air dodge that I can think of.

Also, as someone who is occasionally in a position where I'm significantly better than someone at a game - toning it down for other people is no fun at all. Now, handicapping yourself in some way to give them a chance can be a fun challenge, but that's different entirely. If I'm going to purposefully throw the game, then there's no real point. Then again, I still have plenty of fun playing even when I'm horribly outmatched.

I confess, as a decent-to-good Smash player, the way I play with people who arern't as practiced is by using the characters I rarely use. Link, Bowser, Marth... If I still kill them easily, then i adjust my use of B moves. :smalltongue:

Heheheh, who do you normally play as? I tend to end up playing Pit, Ike, Ganondorf, and Bowser. (the use of Meta-Knight here is frowned upon with this group of friends because of some of the meta-game stats he has (speed, hit priority of moves, etc.), so I've fallen out of practice with him).

ION:
We got a lot of snow yesterday, so I spent all morning shoveling our front, as well as for our old neighbour. The temperature has risen to 0°C, so now all snow has turned into...
...
Hugsnow? I'd call it "kramsnö" in Swedish, which literally translates to "hugsnow", and my online dictionary says so as well, but Wiktionary doesn't agree about this word's existence. Wikipedia suggests "'packy' snow" in its entry on Snowball, but Wiktionary doesn't agree about that either. Bottom line, it's snow which isn't really thawing, but it's wet enough to turn shapeable, so you can make snowballs and snowmen and snowlanterns out of it. What would you call it?

Packable snow? I don't think there's a single English word for it, but I know what you're talking about.

There are 7 pages of things I should have read, but I was eager to jump into the banter. Well, generally pretty good. My mind is absolutely buzzing with gaming ideas, which is always fun. But I also had trouble over the last few weeks with some issues, hence my being gone. So, better is the best way to put it.

Just do not move to Australia. There are droughts over there all of the time. I think someone somewhere I used to live recently mentioned there is a drought right now. In the rainy season! I hope the farmers are okay...

That is very good to hear!

That is very true. In fact, at one point I wrote plot things to develop one of my players' characters because the character was a caricature with little to no backstory. I didn't want to ask them to write a kickass backstory if they were not going to be able to. I have a bad tendency to think of chaotic as just 'inconsistent'. Which means as long as the good character is being good, but overall is inconsistent I won't mess with alignment changes. I'm probably wrong too, but it's been alright. I haven't played in... Five or six years so I can't remember if any of my own chaotic characters were any good or not.

Heh, one of my players writes stories as a hobby. She is nice about it, but often jokes about how often I miss an opportunity to insert cliches or tropes (she doesn't do this in her writing, she just thinks it's pretty hard to avoid using cliches.)

So, better is the best way to put it.

Actually, I have no idea. But considering all of the stuff they built I'm sure either they have a lot of clients or charge a lot of money. Even with the fact that in both the movies they were only busy because lesser ghosts were drawn by larger supernatural phenomenon. (Or something to that effect.)
I don't know, myself; I've never watched the show, and only know of it through pop culture osmosis.

Firstly, it seems more like senseless violence than stabbing for a cause so I'm less likely to be interested. Secondly, I'm not sure all of the 'I used to be a ____ once, until I took a dagger to the knee' would be tolerable.

What game is this?

Virtue's Last Reward.

That sounds more like torture. :smalltongue:

You'd think, but it's really funny hearing a robot compare the Chinese Room test to how humans and robots process information.

It was this time. I like spice that is tasty and then hurts me. The garlic just hurt. :smallannoyed:

Aw, but garlic is the best, especially when you put WAY too much of it on something! Well, I'm sorry that yours hurt you. :smallfrown:

Does it have to be fresh meat or is preserved meat Ok?
:smallconfused:

I'd be fine either way, just so long as I could find the stuff. Turns out, googling "bear meat" does NOT give you commercial results.

I'm sorry, Dimonite, but it's for the Greater Good. You understand, right?

EYE'm sorry, EYE just can't SEE how this would help anyone. :smalltongue:

ION: writing ideas sparking in my brain like crazy right now. Wonder how long this'll last?

Trying "Can you buy bear meat" yielded two "exotic meats" websites and a discussion of North Carolina hunting regulations about whether they could sell their excess meat or not. So I dunno.

You may not be able to eye it now, but hindsight should kick in soon. Iris there was another way, but there is not - my deepest apologises, fellow pupil.

On the bright side, no physical damage is done to the brain, so you should be able to retina all memories of seeing.

Tell us about these ideas.

Well, my google-fu is not the strongest. :smalltongue:

Well played. :smalltongue:

Tell us about these ideas.

Well, I don't want to say too much (I may actually end up writing books at some point) but I can give you a couple highlights:
Pregnant lady with a sword flanked by two guys. One of then says "we've got you outnumbered." She just grins and says "But I'm fighting for two."

Same lady goes into labor while fighting a Lawful Evil type, and he gets her help and waits until she's all better before fighting her again, and he promises to care for her child as if it were his own, and she says "I make the same promise for your son" (because the villain's wife died in childbirth a couple of years back). She later ends up employing a dragon as a babysitter for the kids.

Alas! Well, what little fragments you're willing to offer should sustain us for a while.

That was what I used to think too. :smallfrown:

:smalleek: I think I will just trust you about that.

The key is that bear meat comes in cans. :smallwink:

A question for Taet and Tai. What even is your avatar of, exactly? It's some kind of pink cat thing with wings.

My insomnia says hello.

It also wonders if anyone has any ideas for fresh herbs that would pair well with cilantro? Preferably fairly easily available ones.

Also, I need a new avatar. What should I do with it?
