I tried getting an answer from the Q&A thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=16889371&postcount=1011), but this question is a bit too specific I think.

I've often heard that a StP Erudite can only convert a spell to power if the spell is available to an arcane caster of 3 levels lower. (Basically CL is effectively ML-3 for being able to learn spells). Is there a source for this rule? I cannot find it.

Rules for StP (https://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20070629a)

Post that contains posts about limits to spell level (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=11218.0). Quotes:

you'll be getting stuff a little later than the Wizards, since you treat spells as Discipline Powers and you can only learn them up to Max Power Level-1.

You are not casting Wizard spells as a Wizard one level lower. You are casting Wizard spells as a Wizard 3 levels lower

Sanctum Spell. One level lower.

Thanks so much if anyone is able to find the rule for this.

The -3 is only going to confuse you since different classes learn new levels of spells at different times depending on their progression. Instead, think of spell levels (i.e 1st through 9th), rather than character levels (i.e. 1 to 20.)

Anyway, the answer to your question is in your first link:

You treat the spell as a discipline power for the basis of learning it,

Discipline powers, and therefore spells, can only be learned if they are one spell level below your maximum. To find that rule, you need the basic Erudite entry: (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/iw/20060406b&page=1)

Learning Discipline Powers: An erudite can learn discipline powers only by directly learning a power from another's repertoire, learning it from a power stone, or taking the Expanded Knowledge feat (EPH 46). In any case, an erudite can learn a discipline-only power only if it is up to 1 level lower than the highest level power he can manifest.

So if you are capable of learning Level 6 general psionic powers, you could learn up to Level 5 psionic discipline powers, or Level 5 spells.

Perfect, thank you so much for pointing it out!
