View Full Version : Your plans for Valentines Day?

gurgleflep
2014-02-01, 03:01 AM
My plans are to ask out my best friend and hang out with her  I've known her for about eight years and we get along fabulously; she's well aware that I like her and she's made it clear that she likes me as well. Gotta say, I'm a tad nervous just thinking about it!

So, what do you wonderful folks have planned: date night, movie, cuddling next to a fire, game night, concert..?

Assuming me and my girlfriend are still together, I'll probably drive down from my school to hers and present her with the painting of her pet cats I've been working on. She'll give me something, and then we'll probably just spend the weekend holed up in her dorm room eating pizza, watching anime, and ignoring our homework.

Apart from the assuming part, it sounds like a rather pleasant weekend, anime, pizza, and the ignoring of homework. If you don't mind my asking, why the assumption?

Personally, I'm going to hole up and play video games whilst ignoring the day Day[9] has dubbed 'Singles Awareness Day'. Although St. Valentine has a cool story...

I don't drink (well... not vodka anyway, I prefer wine) so I've gotta ask, is Stolichnaya a brand?

Yes. And it's an excellent medicine for feelings of loneliness on Singles Awareness Day. But then again, Vodka (at least to me) usually acts like a jealous girlfriend anyways, so it kind of mimicks the experience :smallamused::smallbiggrin:

It's my first with someone to spend it with (yay!) so I'm probably going to bake him a bunch of cookies and put them in a nice jar. Anything more elaborate than that and I'll end up embarrassing him if he forgot Valentine's Day existed. (Which I don't really mind him forgetting, because he's the kind of guy who shows up with spontaneous chocolate during the other 364 days of the year.)

I'll have to hop on the "if we're still together" approach.

Dinner&movie seems like the standard fare, so yeah that. Maybe flowers? Depends on how I feel that day I guess.

There is a neat cocktail bar in town that does experimental cocktails for half price on Tuesday's. So we're probably going to go out and try some strange and exciting cocktails.

We try and avoid going places on actual Valentines day, so the plan is cooking a meal together and having a quite night in. Probably with board games. It should be fun.

I'm going to get a beautiful picture of Tieria Erde on my desktop, a few candles lit, dinner for two (Tieria never eats much for some reason, so when I make food for both of us it works out because I'm a big eater) and then we're going to cuddle.

I hope it's the former, koalas taste horrible and are toxic because of all the eucalyptus they eat.
With that said...

I'll probably be with my friends. I may start dating a girl before then, if things go well I might spend it with her instead.
I honestly have no idea and so far I've never been in a relationship at Valentines Day. Count me among the people that find it slightly depressing, it reminds me of my awful track record when it comes to building a lasting relationship.
Who knows, maybe my next 3 month relationship will encompass Valentines Day. :smallsigh:

I've never even really gotten the whole romantic connection of Valentine's Day until like... two years ago. In Finnish it's called 'ystävänpäivä' which translates to "a day for friends". Nothing romantic there. It's always been a day simply for friends, you hang out with them, give them disgusting heart cards that have a little teddy on them saying "best friends forever!". :smallyuk: And at school hugging people became a competition. What.

Not saying that it doesn't have the romantic aspect to it for some people, but I'd say generally because we're not common with the whole Valentine's day's origins and the Finnish word has no connections to it, people care so much less for it. Most of my friends view it as yet another American holiday trying to invade space from our calendars (just like Halloween, which... honestly, still don't understand why it's becoming more popular, it's basically killed an old Finnish tradition comparable to Halloween in the trick&treat sense [no one goes trick or treating in Finland on Halloween anyways, it's just house parties]).

Of course, all that will change in an instant if I find someone I want to ask out who happens to be willing to go out with me... there are other ways than skiing to get a cardio work out in amiright?

This. Honestly, it wasn't a really celebrated thing in Finland until it became commercially popular through American and probably a bit by British media as well. I know the legend is old, but as I said, Finnish people don't connect the story with the whole Valentine-theme as the Finnish word has absolutely no reference to it. I mean, I think I learnt the connection through randomly surfing on the internet when I was about 12/13. I think we came across it in school, initiated by the teacher in upper secondary school when the teacher was complaining about Valentine's day commercialism. :smalltongue:

Just like any over-commercialised day/holiday, I try to avoid it with great pleasure. :smallwink:

I have plans to get my husband a few thematically appropriate notebooks from Typo because he's studying Nursing - I'm thinking The Human Body (http://shop.cottonon.com/shop/product/campus-a5-notebook-human-body/), Ribs (http://shop.cottonon.com/shop/product/a4-campus-notebook-ribs/), and Brains (http://shop.cottonon.com/shop/product/a4-campus-notebook-brains/). (I have 69 Percent (http://shop.cottonon.com/shop/product/campus-a5-notebook-69-percent/) and RAWRRR (http://shop.cottonon.com/shop/product/a5-spinout-notebook-rawrrr/). I literally can't go into this shop just to browse. I never spend less than $20.)

Unfortunately, as he is studying, he has class that night, so we'll probably have dinner out somewhere on Wednesday night. We used to always go out for pizza to this one specific restaurant but we moved last May so we've yet to pick a new local one.

I'll probably spend Valentine's night posting silly things on Tumblr. There's a trend for silly Valentine's at the moment and so far I've only made one but I could do more. I like to make Valentine's about making gestures for my friends in general as well as my significant other.

Me and Mrs B don't really make much of the day, cards and maybe a meal out I guess. I've never really bought into the 'you must make a big show of your love on this exact date' concept. If you're in anything approaching a healthy relationship this kind of affection should be spread all year round.

Honestly we're both looking more forward to our bi-weekly Dresden Files RPG the night before, can't say we have anything particular planned. Maybe stay up all night on Thursday binging on the TV series we have on DVD that we haven't watched yet or something...

Note: We are dorm-residing engineering students.I recommend a picnic. Ideally at a look-out or a botanical garden, but any old green space will do. You can do anything from home-made sandwiches, coke and biscuits on a couple of old towels, to a whole BBQ chicken and fancy bread, wine and berries on a proper picnic blanket with tastefully (and carefully) arranged candles; you could go even fancier, but you appear to be on a budget.
If the weather's no good, set it up in one of your dorm rooms, complete with pillow fort.

When my brother left home for good, he left his condoms in the drawer and I was too self-conscious to appreciate it ("No one would want to use them with me anyway") so I made balloons and gave them to my cat to play with, not thinking there could be anything wrong with that.

Cue the most awkward talk at the veterinary. "What have you been doing with this cat?!"

Lesse, single again this Valentine's Day, for the... fifth year in a row. Assuming I see anybody, it'll be four other (probably) straight dudes for a wild night of Descent.

Mind, I don't find being single on Valentine's Day any more objectionable than any other day of the year. Compared to the Valentine's Day when I was dating in fact, it's remarkably stress free. No need to try to figure out the proper response to 'I don't want you to do anything for Valentine's Day.' In the end I went with sending her a necklace that just happened to arrive on Valentine's Day for, as explained by the letter, entirely coincidental reasons.

On a more serious note. Im still on my diet and nowhere near a weight/looks level that would allow for any actual Flirts or the like. The problem isn't so much loneliness as depression and anxiety. I can't deal with people in person at all; I have trouble enough dealing with people online. I'm too weird for most, and frankly I wouldn't want to inflict myself on anyone anyway as a large percentage of the time I'm grouchy or sad for no reason whatsoever.

Sorry to hear that, but I think you'll get better as long as you don't lose hope. Sounds clichè, but I've been through some **** myself and a few years ago I would have never thought it possibile for things to get better, but they did. Pssh. Thin, good looking people do not have a monopoly on romance. I can easily think of numerous people in the morbidly obese category who have spouses or SOs, as well as people who aren't good looking. I personally have been dating someone for over a year, and I'm not particularly thin (though I'm nowhere near the morbidly obese category) and not particularly good looking. Plus, I was pretty much oblivious to being hit on a year ago, and am only dating due to everything falling into my lap.

Point being, you don't need to write off romance until the diet works fully.

I would totally give you chocolate and/or flowers.Aw, ta

Point being, you don't need to write off romance until the diet works fully.I know a guy nicknamed Shrek, and it sure ain't cuz of his sparkling personality*. He and his also very overweight, not-aesthetically-pleasing-to-me girlfriend are a totally adorable couple.

*His personality is actually pretty sparkling, but it's not why he's called Shrek.

Valentine's Day was my wedding anniversary. I am divorced now. But I still love Valentine's Day, and plan to celebrate my emancipation from a desperately lonely marriage.

I reserved a ticket to a play at a small but prestigious theater downtown. I have a gorgeous vintage dress to wear, and will take myself out to dinner before the play, and maybe get a drink after. I've been asked out, but I am so relieved to be single again that I actually prefer to be alone. Indeed, I find I have a better time when I go out on my own, because it forces me to be more outgoing, rather than focussing on my date.

I'm pretty excited about it!

@ Socratov: Good choice of poison. За счастье !

@ Heliomance: That is the nicest thing I have heard in a long time!

@ Eloliel: When my father was courting my mother, he was a grad student and poorer than a church mouse. He could not afford to buy her flowers, so her gave a packet of flower seeds and a love letter. She planted the seeds, and after she died I found the empty packet they came in her jewelry box: she kept it almost forty years.

I have plans to get my husband a few thematically appropriate notebooks from Typo because he's studying Nursing -

Nice idea...human sexuality/reproduction is something he's going to cover but is far more fun to shop for than neurology. Or you can go with the classics and get him something from Shere Hite, Masters and Johnson, Kinsey...

I have been married for over 25 years, and we love Valentines day. It allows us to spend on ourselves rather than necessities for once. I will get chocolates for my wife and daughters, although over the years I have given flowers, dinners, lingerie (after marriage), nail salon certificates, etc. to break the monotony. Cards are a must and if you have the talent, try to put a poem in it...

I have plans now. My girlfriend and I along with four friends of ours are going to go see a play. A Shakespeare play about stupid people doing stupid things because they think that they're in love with each other and their families are a bunch of feuding nitwits who basically enable their destruction by being irresponsible morons.

The topic's a good thing too. It veers way to close to a triple date on Valentine's day otherwise. I wouldn't want to risk actual romance; that would be silly.

This year I had Valentine's Day figured out, and planned early.

My wife was responding to a Facebook status message from a friend, and the subject of tiaras came up. My wife talked about how any woman would like to have one - how much she would like to have one. "Aha!" I thought. "I can get her something sparkly that she would like." So I ordered it, and it arrived yesterday. So I hid the box with her tiara in it, so I could triumphantly produce it on Valentine's Day. Planned and executed in advance, and it was something I knew she wanted.

Today, the tiara she bought herself arrived.

Regarding the comment I used to start of the thread: I'm still single. I won't go into detail, but distance (Missouri to Illinois) is part of it... not a big part, but still a part. We're still great friends and have plans to meet up soon-ish.
