hey guys,

as caster players know well, it is always good to cast behind obstacles (corners, boxes etc..).

so what do you think about casting spells on your knees to get extra defense? is there any reference about it somewhere?

I'd just treat it like he's Prone.

I don't think there's anything in the rules at all about getting a defensive bonus for crouching or kneeling, but you could house rule it to have half the effects of being prone.

If you have something to kneel behind, it'll give you cover. Absent that, though, it'll hurt you more than it helps.

By RAW (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/combatModifiers.htm), sitting or kneeling gives you a -2AC vs melee attacks and a +2 vs ranged attacks, even if you're not behind anything.

Sitting or kneeling behind a big object could also give you cover and/or concealment and/or turn the object's cover into total cover or increase the cover bonus, up to the DM.

That makes sense. Kneeling steadies your aim, but then you're less agile, so dodging a melee attack would be harder.
