The famous actor, who won an Oscar for Capote and was in the Big Lebowski, Magnolia, The Master, Mary and Max, Mission Impossible 3 and Hunger Games 2 among others is dead of a drug overdose. Aged 46.

Pay your respects here.

He recently went to rehab in May 2013. However, some reports say he died of prescription medication like Heath Ledger.

Here's the proof he died. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-26009575)

Sorry, I meant "I'm surprised" by this bit of news, not that I didn't believe you. I didn't know he had drug issues. Goodbye Hoffman, we'll always remember you as the "villain" in Patch Adams who was actually right to be criticizing Robin Williams.

I wish I'd known him better. The only films I saw him in are The Big Lebowski and Catching Fire, but for some reason, I recognized him instantly when I saw him in the latter - and I don't even have that much of a memory for faces.

Wasn't it Bob Gunton, the go-to guy to play stern authority figures?

Only 46? Way too young. He has three kids under 10. Sigh.

Obligatory shout out to Doubt. He played that role with perfect ambiguity and aplomb.

It's sad, expecially seeing how he went. Could have lived a long and happy life.

+1, also Magnolia (less for him than for the film in general).
