This is a game I was very fond of on another forum. Allow me to copy the Rules from the first post of that thread.

Three Card Blind is a forum-based Magic game in which in every round, each player PMs three cards to the host (Thisisacat). These cards make up your entire deck; you begin each game with those cards in your hand, and you play against each other player twice (one going first, and once going second). These matches are not really "played" as such; Thisisacat simply looks at each player's cards, and figures out who would win. You get 3 points for each win, 1 points for each draw, and 0 points for each loss. Since you play each opponent twice, that means that you can get up to 6 points per opponent. Whoever has the most points after playing everybody wins the round.

There are many variations of Three Card Blind. In Vanishing Three Card Blind, there is a list of banned cards that nobody can put into their decks. In the first round, there are no banned cards. After that, the cards from the winning deck (or decks, in case of a tie) are added to the ban list. The only cards which are exempt from being banned are basic lands, the Fallen Empires and Mercadian Masques storage lands (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?text=+[%22remove%20any%20number%20of%20storage%20counters %22]&type=+[Land]), and the Time Spiral dual storage lands (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?text=+[storage]&set=[%22Time%20Spiral%22]&type=+[Land]).

Also, there are four cycles of lands with a special rule. Once every card in one of these cycles has been banned, the entire cycle will be unbanned. These cycles are:
The Invasion saclands (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?text=+[tapped]+[sacrifice]&set=[%22Invasion%22]&type=+[Land])
The Fallen Empires saclands (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?text=+%5Bsacrifice%5D&set=%5B%22Fallen%20Empires%22%5D&type=+%5BLand%5D)
The Ravnica block Karoos (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?text=+[return]&format=[%22Ravnica%20Block%22]&type=+[Land])
The Masques block Depletion lands (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?action=advanced&type=+[Land]&text=+[Depletion]&set=%7C[%22Mercadian%20Masques%22])

Some additional rules:

All sets are legal, including Unglued and Unhinged. However, any cards that have a random effect (such as Mana Clash (http://www.wizards.com/magic/autocard.asp?name=Mana+Clash)), or require some form of physical or mental dexterity (such as Charm School (http://www.wizards.com/magic/autocard.asp?name=Charm+School) or Question Elemental (http://www.wizards.com/magic/autocard.asp?name=Question+Elemental)) are assumed to go against the person using them in their deck (so Mana Clash would give you 20 tails in a row, Charm School falls off your head immediately, and you get an uncontrollable urge to recite epic poetry once your Question Elemental comes into play, at which point your opponent reveals themself to be The Riddler.)

You don't lose the game from being unable to draw a card, but the draw still tries to happen, so you are allowed to use cards such as the Onslaught Words (http://gatherer.wizards.com/?first=1&last=100&term=Words&Field_Name=on&setfilter=Onslaught&colorfilter=All&typefilter=All&output=spoiler&sort=name&x=54&y=26) enchantments, which allow you to skip drawing a card for some effect.

Perfect play is assumed, and during the games, each player knows what the other player has. So your opponent won't play their Akroma (http://www.wizards.com/magic/autocard.asp?name=Akroma) if you have a Control Magic (http://www.wizards.com/magic/autocard.asp?name=Control+Magic), and you always know what to name for your Cabal Therapy (http://www.wizards.com/magic/autocard.asp?name=Cabal+Therapy)

In a situation where neither player can or wants to act, the game is a draw. So if your opponent's deck is Foil (http://www.wizards.com/magic/autocard.asp?name=Foil), Island, and Nether Spirit (http://www.wizards.com/magic/autocard.asp?name=Nether+Spirit), and you would be unable to survive against a 2/2 that comes back every turn, you simply don't play any spells at all, and your opponent never has a way to play Foil and thus discard the Spirit. Since neither player is doing anything, it's a draw.

You don't get any mana to start out with, so your three cards must include something that can get you the mana you need (the aforementioned storage lands are a big help here).

Planechase (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?action=advanced&set=+[%22Planechase%22]&special=true) cards are legal, but they count towards your three cards. If there are any Plane cards, both players share a Plane deck with the first player's on top if he or she has one. In the case of a plane existing in the command zone, all dice rolled will go against the owner of that plane and for the owner's opponent.

Paper (http://www.wizards.com/magic/tcg/productarticle.aspx?x=mtg_tcg_vanguard_productinfo ) and online (http://www.wizards.com/magic/tcg/article.aspx?x=magic/magiconline/vanguard) Vanguard cards are both legal, though you are restricted to a maximum of one vanguard regardless, as per comp rule 902.1. These cards count towards your three cards, just as any other card does.

Heroes are legal, they will start in play as usual. Cards from Fight the Hydra/Fight the Horde are also legal, but as they don't start in play, you'll have a hard time getting them out. No mana cost means that they can't be cast.

If you think Thisisacat made a mistake on the results, make a post saying so. He'll look it over and change the results if you're right, or explain why if you're wrong.

When a new set is out, the cards in it will be legal once a round starts with the set available in Gatherer

Finally, if you aren't sure whether your deck works or not, PM Thisisacat and he'll let you know. You can also PM him if you've changed your mind about your deck and want to submit a different one for the round.

The first round will open now. I am no judge, so bear with me if I have a hard time figuring out the results.

I would prefer that you PM me decks rather than posting them. The format is Three Card Blind for a reason.

That said, first round is likely to be a mix of:
Decks that win on the first turn
Decks that disrupt others on the first turn
Decks that are resistant to disruption

I had avoided linking to the original thread to prevent netdecking but I suppose interest is low and it could spark ideas, so here (http://forums.cardmasterconflict.com:8000/showthread.php?tid=1246) it is.

Duck999

Sounds fun. I'm in. I already PM'd you my 3 card deck and how it works.

TiaC
2014-02-09, 02:34 AM
I have three decks, I'd like at least 5 per round, so once I reach that point I'll run the round.

Should I ask that this be moved to the Structured Games subforum?

Dr.Gunsforhands
2014-02-09, 02:44 AM
Shrug. The other M:tG contests are in the silly area here, and they're pretty structured in their own ways, too. I think the structured games are mainly for Werewolf and stuff.

Yes, I suppose you're right.

Four now, one more and I'll run it. Feel free to recruit people.

Duck999

Ok. I went to recruit in the MTG thread, after all, this is MTG and fun sounding.

Ninjaman
2014-02-12, 03:48 PM
Could we not just start with 4 players?

TiaC
2014-02-12, 09:12 PM
I made one more post to the main MTG thread. I plan to run the match in around 24 hours even if we don't get any more players.

I am also considering a rule to widen the field and strengthen the meta. The rule would be: The highest placed deck from the previous round without any banned cards would be run as a house deck.

This would usually be the second place finisher, but if the top two decks shared cards, I'd have to go farther down the list. This would mean that each player would know one of the decks they would face. They could build to beat it, or build to beat the decks that beat it.

Dr.Gunsforhands
2014-02-12, 11:43 PM
Actually, it would be entertaining if each round had a known house deck that each entry has to beat somehow before being tested on each other. It would be a challenge to find a cheesy way of beating one scenario while being the most efficient at dealing with combinations similar to your own.

This sounds a little too artificial, I don't think I'd want to see it every round. I would be OK with special rounds every so often. e.g. The original thread had a backdraft round and a round where bonus points were awarded for playing a Gold Fish (creature type fish and multicolored).

Gold: Ninjaman

Bronze: onasuma, Duck999
Execution Was a Little Vaulty: Blood_caller

A strong start, showcasing the power of disruption in this format. Both Dr.Gunsforhands and Ninjaman used the power of Force of Will to great effect, and it was only Duck999's use of Strip Mine that kept them from sharing the gold.

onasuma had difficulty with his mana source. Since he can only get mana from it once, against Blood_caller he cannot play his win condition without allowing the Afflicted Deserter onto the field.

This round sees the end of one of the most terrifying cards in the format. Zephyr Spirit will be no more!

Ban List:
Artifact: Memnite

Blue: Force of Will, Zephyr Spirit

Round two is now open for business between the hours of 7-10(weekends and holidays excluded, please call ahead for reservations).

The highest placing deck without banned cards is: Black Lotus, Swords to Plowshares, Samurai of the Pale Curtain. If we find ourselves stuck on four, I'll throw it in.

EDIT: I'd hope for rounds every week or two at least.

Ninjaman

Question, how does mill work? Or discard?

Mill does very rarely work, since your opponent has no cards in his library. If he had (because of aomething like memory lapse), he would put it into his graveyard.

Discard is assumed to hit the worst possible card, unless you pick one with something like thoughtseize.

TiaC
2014-02-14, 08:33 PM
Also, you do not lose for being unable to draw, so mill is not a win condition.

Edit: Also, seven decks already. Looks like we will be able to pull off matches at least weekly.

Dr.Gunsforhands cruises to an almost undefeated victory with his blazingly fast Laboratory Maniac deck.

The fight for second is a close one between a fast creature deck and effective disruption.

A lot of interesting decks this round, including the first use of Un-cards.

Ban List:
Artifact: Memnite, Black Lotus

Blue: Force of Will, Zephyr Spirit, Leyline of Anticipation, Laboratory Maniac

I cannot believe I missed that, it actually breaks the top two decks. However, I try to let people know if their deck doesn't work so this is partially my fault. Dr.Gunsforhands did submit another deck if I ruled the first didn't work. He meant due to the one-use lotus, but I'm going to allow it as he did ask if his deck would work and I told him it would. Ninjaman is a little more difficult, as he submitted a deck and then changed his mind. I think I will let him use his first submitted deck this time though.

Future rule is that if you submit multiple decks for any reason and one of them obviously doesn't work as you thought it did, I will use another of your decks if it is not changed prior to the match.

Hm, you're right, I hadn't considered that.

Question!

I noticed no such rule in the first post, but are we allowed to have two cards with the same name? (For example, "Forest, Grizzly Bear, Grizzly Bear.")

Yes you are, even if the card is restricted. This would be a good time to mention that in the event of cards like the wishes or Research, you may have a sideboard of three cards to draw from.

When you play second, he can always regen the moth.

HS1: Cavern, moth
BC1: Lotus, Hexmage, Depths
HS2: Swarmyard, BC sacs hexmage, Marit Lage

My bad had seen the moth as a 1W drop

Yes, you can PM me decks at any time. You can even send me decks for multiple rounds at once.

Yes, there is no limit on how many copies of a card can be in your deck. (the deck size is still limited though)

Not quite, if you have a card that fetches other cards from outside the game, you get to name three cards to pick from. This is similar to how these cards work in constructed play.

Quite right, as I said, I am no judge. I had that as WL at first, but when I noticed that the fiend couldn't hit the arbor, I changed it to DD. Random_Person is no longer Sadly Deluded, but instead takes the bronze.

Random should have won once against zweisteine.

No, Zweisteine can just choose not to play the angel. That was Random's big weakness. Against a good creature, Repel Intruders is just a draw.

@Zweisteine. I wouldn't say you did too badly.

Results:
Gold: Misothene
Silver: Duck999
Bronze: Blood_caller, Ninjaman
Dazed by a lode of...: Lea Plath, Lord Ruby34
Angel mercied: Zweisteine
Multicolor madness: Random_person
Pride goes before a fall: onasuma
Should have stayed in paradise: HypoSoc

Misothene's turn zero disruption deck proves very strong against a lotus-heavy field. Almost every deck was dead in the water before the strip mine hit, it only serving in one match.

Unfortunately, this means that Duck999's very powerful deck is going to heavily distort next round's meta.

Props to Ninjaman for understanding my rambling enough to make a successful Wish deck. This round also saw our first planeswalker.

Onasuma and HypoSoc both sent me decks that give them a 4/4 when attacking, 2/2 on defense, using very different methods.

Ban List:
Land: Strip Mine

Colorless: Memnite, Black Lotus

Blue: Force of Will, Zephyr Spirit, Leyline of Anticipation, Laboratory Maniac

Red: Chancellor of the Forge

White: Chancellor of the Annex

On the old thread there was one guy who hadn't kept up with magic for years who just sent in ~20 terrible decks. His goal was not to win, but to make a difference in who did.

I skipped Blacker Lotus precisely because I expected decks designed specifically to handle it, actually.

Now, what I find interesting is that the Cheese deck is still legal, and actually would have beaten more than half the field had anyone played it. By my reckoning only two decks other than mine could pull off WW against it, and only one other would get WL. Everyone else would have lost twice, which means if a hypothetical extra player had run it they would have got... 27 points, sharing the bronze. I expected more people to build against it.

Egad, my fight with Eternis is such huge array of interactions. It took me a while to figure out how I could pull it off; I have to castigate his 2/1, steal it, leave back my inkmoths to block the 2/2 and weaken it, and then outrace the now-1/1 with the 2/1. Swamp/2xSarcomancy would have totally killed me.

Absolutely thrilling!

Actually, it's a bit simple than that. Once you steal the 2/1, it can trade with the token on defense. Since he no longer controls a zombie, he cannot revive it. If it was a 2/1 vs a 1/1, the game would end in a draw.(I'm an idiot, can't block but Sarcomancy will kill him) I did almost forget you had her second ability. This is actually a surprisingly tough matchup to determine.

What almost tripped me up this round was the interaction between Lodestone Golem and Isochron Scepter. Still not as bad as last round's slowly growing creatures and the rack. There were far too many complicated matches last round, like you vs. Duck999. The Hydra allows a lot of options.

.... Gravecrawler (the 2/1) can't block ;D.

Wouldn't Hyposac win against the Lodestone Golem if he went first? Because the spell becomes imprinted before its cost gets raised and after it is imprinted the cost doesn't matter?

I could be wrong on how that works, I'm just trying to figure it out.

.... Gravecrawler (the 2/1) can't block ;D.

Doesn't matter anyway, I got what he meant. He weakens the zombie with the nexus and either outraces him or kills him with sarcomancy (he can also just replay the Gravecrawler if it dies).

I and some judge (http://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/magic-fundamentals/magic-rulings/magic-rulings-archives/304291-isochron-scepter-lodestone-golem) think that Lodestone Golem's cost is not part of the mana cost.

Well, I don't think you were actually last Reinholdt... Eternis can't beat you. Mirri only lets the Rootwalla give the Angel -1/-1 until end of turn, which can't ever kill it. You are then free to swing away for the kill, and counterattacks don't matter.

Unfortunately for Eternis, this means a grand total of 0 points...

True, I saw "Counter" and just assumed they were both counters. I like that the only discard this round couldn't hit the rootwalla anyways.

@HypoSoc: I know, but I had to see if he could choose his permanants to sac and then bring out Marit Lage before he actually sacced them or put the ability on the stack and then let Emrakul's ability go on top.

Wouldn't have changed anything, Eternis could just hold Karakas until you play him, then bounce him and win. Therefore, neither of you do anything.

When he goes first you still discard though.

Hehe. Emrakul did you in FC. That's always mildly amusing to watch.

Whoooo Gold!

I thought I'd get a lot of WL and end up with maybe a bronze. Glad I waited until Blacker Lotus was gone. But now it'll be another month or so until I can come up with another good deck idea.

As far as decks go I really liked Eternis' set-up, but that's probably just because he used one of my favourite creatures.

Hey, Thisis?
Can't I bounce Serra ascendant with Karakas in response to Ashnod's destruction trigger?
Which would mean that it would be a Win/Loss to Fleeing Coward, and a Win/Win against Blood Caller, given that I can bounce emrakul Ad infinitum if I go first but if I don't it's an auto-lose (V FC) and I can just bounce that fillibuster dude when required, and NOT attack with Serra ascendant that turn?
Which would bump me up to 21, beating Whooves?
I still lose to reaverb because he can kill serra when it's just come into play and then flashback kills me.

Reinholdt
2014-03-14, 06:32 AM
Don't know about the rest, but I know that against FC, if you drop Karakas and then Serra, you wouldn't be able to bounce Emrakal, so FC's bonus turn would annihilate Karakas and Serra. So you have to leave Karakas untapped until he drops Emrakal. But then FC would never drop it, not even going first because you could bounce it and he can't recast.

So he ends waiting for you to drop Serra so he can get on the board but you can't do that until he drops Emra. You end up deadlocked because the first person to move loses.

HypoSoc

Actually, no. The links in the battles are right, but the proper gatherer name of the card if "Lyzolda, the Blood Witch Avatar (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=182302)."

It seems that if you include one of these, "Vanguard Cards," in your deck, you begin the game with it in play. They also affect your maximum hand size (which is usually irrelevant here) and your starting life total (which is potentially relevant here, but is usually worth it for powerful, free effects.)

He used the vanguard card, its for a variant of mtg were every player have a vanguard in play all the time that affect the players starting hand and life + gives a ability or 2.

I'm pretty certain that I tie with Misothene. Bayou doesn't enter the battlefield tapped, so it can always pay for the wolf faster than I can get rid of it.

I can't attack if the wolf is up as a blocker, since that makes it come back as a 2/2 and kill me. Misothene can't just attack with impunity because I can get two 1/1s and win that race.

There's Lion's eye diamond but it discards your entire hand to produce the mana so you couldn't use it for the chalice.

The thing is, it wasn't the speed of getting it out that was the factor - it was the 10 turns without them being able to do damage to you. The only deck that playing the chalice sooner would have helped would be against Misothene when you went first because then you wouldn't have been forced to discard it.

And I've submitted a deck that goldfishes on... a very disappointing turn four, it looks like.

I apologize for the delay, I don't really have any good excuse.

I probably made a mistake here, so medals and ban list will go up after I sleep.

It's good to be back.

Victory for a planes deck . I liked the fact that bazaar was only there to discard the eldrazi and get it back into the deck and that it never actually casts a spell so discard and counter decks can't really do anything to it (even though there weren't many this round).

Gunsforhands - that was the exact deck I was going to try next round. Guess I'll need to think of something else.

Also, I think phyrexian dreadnought was already on the banned list.

I wish I could say I was glad I beat you to it; that combo you used just now is amazing. What kind of name for a plane is Fabacin, anyway? :smalltongue:

EDIT: I thought for a minute that Emrakul's lack of haste from not being actually cast would give me a chance to hit him, but while that's technically true, he just comes right back because of the way the plane mechanic works. When you planeswalk out of a plane, you go to the next plane in the queue, which, in this case, is just the same plane.

Argh, so good.

EDIT: One question: when exactly does one planeswalk to a plane?

When you roll the six-sided plane die(a sorcery speed ability costing 1 for each time you have already played it this turn) one face causes you to planeswalk, and one side causes the chaos ability to trigger. Chance always goes against the owner of the plane.

Results:
Gold: Tom the Mime
Silver: Dr.Gunsforhands
Bronze: HypoSoc
Misstepped: Ninjaman
Who did you think the vultures were circling?: Eternis

Some very fast decks this round, and some powerful disruption. However, Tom the Mime's deck pulled off an undefeated victory due to being as fast as any other deck and all but immune to disruption.

Are we allowed cards from Fight the Hydra/Fight the Horde or Hero Cards?

Heroes are fine, they will start in play as usual. Cards from Fight the Hydra/Fight the Horde are also legal, but as they don't start in play, you'll have a hard time getting them out. No mana cost means that they can't be cast.

So, I have a few decks and could use a few more. I was thinking that I would make the round after this themed. Unless someone has a better suggestion, all decks would need to contain a planeswalker.

It could be interesting but I think you'd see a lot of Elamdri avatars and sac lands to get a 4 cmc planeswalker out turn 1. Planeswalkers costing more than 4 would be turn 4 earliest with 2 lotus blooms (unless I'm missing other mana options) and I can't see them catching up from there. Storage land give you an extra slot but then you're monocolour for the additional card as well and very slow. Maybe Talon Gates could help? Otherwise you'll likely see very similar decks from people.
