recently i was in a game playing a killer gnome-esque character. i was a gnome under the effects of an invisible greater invisibility spell (with the darkstalker feat) when an enemy caster summoned a bunch of huge snakes, one of which was in my square. my DM ruled that since we were in the same square, that snake could somehow sense me and thus went to grapple me. my question is: could the snake have sensed me? its done and over now, and im not gonna make a big deal about it, this is just for my own curiosity.

If it's in your square, I think it's reasonable to say that it's aware you're in the same square as it. It would still have a 50% miss chance when it made the touch attack to attempt to grapple you though.

Even if it's not in the same square as you, I think there's a rule that you can use a standard action (or maybe one of your attacks if you have multiple ones) to flail around wildly in a square and try to determine if there's an invisible creature in it.

Here we go! "A creature can grope about to find an invisible creature. A character can make a touch attack with his hands or a weapon into two adjacent 5-foot squares using a standard action. If an invisible target is in the designated area, there is a 50% miss chance on the touch attack. If successful, the groping character deals no damage but has successfully pinpointed the invisible creature’s current location. (If the invisible creature moves, its location, obviously, is once again unknown.)"

And yes, the snake could probably sense you. If we want to drag realism into it, snakes can see up close via infrared/heat vision. It noticed your body heat and attacked. I'd be reasonable to still apply the 50% miss chance though.

Scent got you.

A creature with the scent ability can detect opponents by sense of smell, generally within 30 feet. If the opponent is upwind, the range is 60 feet. If it is downwind, the range is 15 feet. Strong scents, such as smoke or rotting garbage, can be detected at twice the ranges noted above. Overpowering scents, such as skunk musk or troglodyte stench, can be detected at three times these ranges.

The creature detects another creature’s presence but not its specific location. Noting the direction of the scent is a move action. If it moves within 5 feet of the scent’s source, the creature can pinpoint that source.

Emphasis, mine. If you get within 5ft of a creature with scent, which sharing a square with it definitely counts as, it pinpoints you.
