Confused about Elan's Rapier Count?!

I know there's a quote where Rich said Elan has two rapiers. One from Haley here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0028.html) and a better one from Julio here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0392.html).

Tarquin broke one and Julio gave him a "chaos sabre" to replace it. But it's implied that Elan doesn't have a sword now. But he still has one before he got his new sabre. Which one did Tarquin break and what is the fate of the other one?

Maybe he just stopped carrying it with him. Its not like anyone ever gets disarmed except when they get utterly trounced anyway.

I think Tarquin broke the +3 Keen Rapier. Presumably, the one Haley gave him is too weak at this level. They were much lower level back then and I am sure Haley's gift wasn't a +4 Equivalent. And the Chaos Sabre is probably even better than the Keen one.

If you read the whole tread (www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=8484548), it turned out he lost one of those rapiers in 714 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0714.html)... So from that comic on he only had one rapier, unless someone can find a comic that he indeed retrieved the rapier (again) he lost when fighting Enor.

I do wonder which rapier he lost, if it was the one from Julio wouldn't Elan be more upset about loosing it?

I was under the impression that he just got the +3 Keen Rapierback off-panel after dropping it fighting Enor.

His first Rapier was sundered by Belkar in the comic it was introduced in, (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0017.html) the second one that Haley gave him (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0028.html) was lost when he and Thog were in prison in Cliffport (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0388.html), and the +3 Keen Rapier from Julio (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0392.html) was broken by Tarquin (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0934.html) before being replaced by the Chaos Sabre (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0943.html).

Edit: Just saw that post by The Giant, so that kills my theory. I figured that his Rapier went with Thog's Axe, not Nale.

Julio wouldn't know about any spare rapiers Elan had, and even so, it's safe to assume that any spares are weaker.

Duh, the entire comic was set up so Roy would find out about the battle... I should have realized.

So Elan still got that second rapier, of course its weaker, but its still there.

BTW, I assume the +3 Keen rapier is also silver (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0684.html)? Or is that another different rapier to confuse us more? :smalltongue:

Also, it's typical of the genre for the mentor to leave his/her student with a parting gift as they depart. Giving Elan a more powerful weapon both appeals to Julio's sense of theatrics and is another way of him developing; inheriting the sword Julio uses himself gives a possible closure to that arc if indeed he does retire.

I don't think so. Remember that Nale changed clothes with Elan, also taking his equipment. He probably took the rapier too. Elan would have retrieved it from Nale on his return.

Maybe, but for some reason he never retrieved his lute, his clothes, or his armor, and the armor at least would be something he would want, given his new focus on melee combat (unless the dashing swordsman is unable to wear armor, which hasn't been mentioned at all)

It has, actually. He mentions somewhere that Dashing Swordsmen never wear armour because it interferes with their class abilities.

A dashing swordsman is required to wear highly fashionable armour, if metal it must be polished so you can see reflection of your face on it.

Ordinary bland looking armour given to regular infantry of an army is unacceptable. A dashing swordsman must stand out, women swoon at sight of him.
