The best way is through the wild cohort (https://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031118a) feat . The worst way is through the beastmaster (CAdv, 26) prestige class.

There is the Wild Cohort (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031118a) feat.

Note that the Beastmaster gives actual true animal companions, which means that they gain all of the abilities of animal companions. Wild Cohort is similar to an animal companion, but misses out on some key abilities like Share Spells.

except that it gives him 4 druid levels towards his current pet?

beast master is fine for one additional animal companion with the natural bond feat. more than that will be too weak to matter for combat, so unless you are using exalted companions for scouting and such, there's no point in taking the entire beast master PRC. wild cohort is weaker than an animal companion, but still serviceable.

Meh, and also eh. For the purposes of animal companion advancement, it's just kinda mediocre, costing a feat and a level so that your underleveled companion is marginally less so. For the purposes of adding a second animal companion, it's really bad. All of those animal companions start out at level one, wallowing in irrelevancy, all leading up to the capstone which is effectively an unadvanced riding dog or something. Just terrible.

The dip is a lot less bad on a ranger than it is on a druid, cause rangers aren't as good as druids so you lose less stuff, but spending four levels on a single unadvanced animal companion, or seven levels on an unadvanced animal companion and a slightly advanced animal companion, or Pelor forbid, ten levels on an unadvanced animal companion, a slightly advanced animal companion, and a slightly more advanced animal companion, is a pile of crap no matter how you get there. Natural bond doesn't even apply to more than one animal companion at a time, ever since the errata, so the one marginally interesting use doesn't even work. It's just not a good plan for the acquisition of multiple animal companions.

except that it gives him 4 druid levels towards his current pet? It's fine for the first pet. The rest of the pets are pretty useless.

The Beast Heart Adept is fun, though.

A person in a game i played in was an awakened wolf druid with a wolf companion. Then a beast master with a wolf companion. Then a wild cohort with a wolf companion. then leadership with an awakened wolf cohort. She was 5 wolves....
