The Depraved Scholar
DM Note on Soul Ash:
All sentient creatures drop 50gp of Soul Ash per HD. A proper pyre requires a successful Knowledge (Arcana) DC 20 check. This being the case, the treasure for every encounter should be reduced accordingly as the corpses are a valid source of income. Yes, this also basically makes acts of goblin genocide profitable.

Why do you think Depraved Scholars are on the ‘Hey, they need to die’ list?

Hit Die: d6

Class Skills
Skill Points: 2 + Int modifier
Class Skills: The scholar’s class skills are Appraise (Int), Craft (Int), Fly (Dex), Knowledge (all) (Int), Linguistics (Int), Profession (Wis), and Spellcraft (Int).

Class Features

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: The Depraved Scholar is proficient with simple weapons.

Spells
A Depraved Scholar casts Arcane [Evil] spells drawn from the any spell list presented in Spell Lists. Any divine spells he acquires through his Forbidden Lore ability are converted to Arcane [Evil] spells.

A Depraved Scholar must choose and prepare his spells ahead of time. However, unlike normal spellcasters, a Depraved Scholar must expend an amount of Soul Ash to actually complete the spell. Soul Ash can be acquired in most black markets or use of the Forbidden Lore ability.

1|12.5gp

To learn, prepare, or cast a spell, the Depraved Scholar must have an Intelligence score equal to at least 10 + the spell level. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a Depraved Scholar's spell is 10 + the spell level + the Depraved Scholar's Intelligence modifier.

A Depraved Scholar may know any number of spells. He must choose and prepare his spells ahead of time by getting 8 hours of sleep and spending 1 hour studying his spellbook. While studying, the Depraved Scholar decides which spells to prepare. The Depraved Scholar may have a number of spells prepared equal to his Intelligence modifier. These prepared spells are treated as the Depraved Scholar’s ‘known spells’ for the day for purposes of casting spells.

A Depraved Scholar begins play with a spellbook containing 3 0-level spells plus 1 1st-level spell of his choice. A Depraved Scholar can only acquire spells via Forbidden Lore. The Outsiders only reward successful tools, not fools.

Damned
You have entered into a pact with one of the Powers of the Outer Realm. This deal can be anything you and the GM agree on but should be something that will generate conflicts/adventures. The Powers of the Outer Realm desire Soul Ash and the destruction of all Religions. [e.g. Destroying Temples dedicated to Evil Gods is a valid option.]

As you are assumed to be of relatively high intelligence, given this is an Int casting class, it is assumed you managed to put in a reasonable sounding escape clause into the Pact of agreeing to serve ‘until death’.

You cannot be brought back to life by any external means. Built in Undeath resurrection abilities [such as Lich] still function as normal as they are not restoring you to life but merely reforming a physical vessel for your soul.

Forbidden Lore (Su)
The Depraved Scholar's pact with the Adversary has granted him a unique perspective on magic. The concept of Arcane and Divine is irrelevant. Instead, the Depraved Scholar has spellbooks drenched in the bloody ink of her victims. Every time the Depraved Scholar coupe de graces a spellcaster, she may spend a full round action to attempt to inscribe a spell the victim has memorized into her spellbook. This inscription must be made of her victim's blood.

Once she has completed the inscription, she must roll a Knowledge (Arcana) check with a DC of 20. If successful, the spell is inscribed into her spellbook and added to her class list of spells. If unsuccessful, the page in the spellbook is ruined.

This is the only mechanism by which a Depraved Scholar can acquire new spells.

In addition, a Depraved Scholar knows how to harvest Soul Ash reliably from the corpses of his victims. He does not need to make a Knowledge (Arcana) check to properly burn the corpse.

Spell Focus (Evil)
You gain Spell Focus (Evil) as a bonus feat. This increases the DC of all spells cast by a Depraved Scholar by 1. It obviously does not stack with other spell focus feats.

Greater Spell Focus (Evil)
You gain Greater Spell Focus (Evil) as a bonus feat. This increases the DC of all spells cast by a Depraved Scholar by 1, for a total of 2. It obviously does not stack with other spell focus feats.

Transformation (Ex)
You gain no hit dice at this level. You must select a +1 CR Undead Template, gain that Template. This completes your transition and breaks whatever pact you agreed to upon entering this class.

Pactbreaker (Ex)
As you have broken you Pact, you have acquired a unique bargaining position when dealing with a Power of the Outer Realm. They see you as an equal and bargain with you accordingly. Instead of making outlandish demands, they simply request an exchange of Soul Ash equivalent to the value of the service requested.
