Alrighty. Finding a complete comprehensive list of dnd animals and templates is difficult! So I come to you, oh mighty ones!

For those to whom it matters, I am toying with like a Dark Half-Minotaur Strongheart Halfling who is also a Lycanthrope.

So.

Looking for a predator, scavenger, or omnivore whose size is small, who has the best racial bonus to hide. I've found +4, if there is better, I'd like to see it.

Definitley looking for a single hit die type of animal, but if the special qualities are sick enough, I could consider more.

Suggestions?

Small 1HD lycanthrope animals from MM:
Badger: 1HD, -2 Str, +6 Dex, +4 con
Dog: 1HD, +2 Str, +6 Dex, +4 con
Eagle: 1HD, +0 Str, +4 Dex, +2 con
Dire Rat: 1HD, +0 Str, +6 Dex, +2 con
Snake, Small Viper: 1HD, -4 Str, +6 Dex, +0 con

So it looks like Eagle is the ideal choice for you with Dog as a runner up.

This is a summary of a subset of an excel sheet found here: http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=4398.0 <-includes animals beyond the ones from MM.

At hastur dot net I found 'Lynx', which for 2 hd gets me pounce (yay!), rake, and a +8 racial bonus on Jump checks and a +4 racial bonus on Hide and Move Silently checks. Lynxes have a +8 racial bonus on Balance and Climb checks. A lynx can always choose to take 10 on a Climb check, even if rushed or threatened.
*In areas of tall grass or heavy undergrowth, the Hide bonus improves to +8.

But I cannot find a source for that...

Warning: Pounce is sometimesoften very restrictive outside of Spirit Lion Totem.

Also

A lycanthrope retains the special attacks of the base creature or base animal, depending on which form it is using, and also gains the special attacks described below.

A lycanthrope’s hybrid form does not gain any special attacks of the base animal.

Is pounce a special attack or an ability?

You would retain feats of the animal right?

I read that to mean special attacks meaning like, a gore or tentacle or wing attack or something along those lines...

Pounce is a family of similarly worded Special Attacks

You gain all of the animal feats and Iron Will in addition.

Lynx is from Races of Faerun page 174 btw, if anyone is interested.

I wonder how many other small animals are hiding out there, waiting for me to find them... use them....

FYI:
A Were Lynx would only have the Lynx Pounce ability when in Lynx form (hybrid form does not count).
-4 Str, +6 Dex, +2 Con

Personally I would go Eagle for the flying in hybrid form rather than go Lynx for Pounce that is restricted to pure animal form.

looking to max 'hide' here.

So leaning more like Viper, Carcass Eater, etc.

I don't know about you but I would trade +4 Hide away for EX Flight and +8 Spot. (after all, the best hiding place is where they will never expect you)

Serpent Kingdoms from the FRCS.

Sewerm

2 HD

Str +6
Dex +6

+8 to hide
+3 Natural Armor Bonus

Abilities are unusable in hybrid form, unfortunatly...

Attach (Ex): If a sewerm hits with a bite attack, it latches
onto the opponent's body and is effectively grappling its prey.
The sewerm loses its Dexterity bonus to AC and has an AC of
14. A sewerm has a +16 racial bonus on grapple checks (already
figured into the Base Attack/Grapple entry above).
An attached sewerm can be struck with a weapon or grappled
itself. To remove an attached sewerm through grappling, the
opponent must achieve a pin against it.

Blood Drain (Ex): A sewerm drains blood, dealing automatic
bite damage in any round when it begins its turn attached to a
victim. Once it has dealt 30 points of damage, it detaches and
flees to digest the meal.

Poison (Ex): A sewerm's "venom" is actually an anesthetic
oil secreted through its skin and fangs. This oil prevents
its target from feeling pain at the point of contact, even if it is taking hit point damage. The sewerm uses
this oil tp prevent its victims from noticing its presence while
it feeds.
Bite, injury or contact, Fortitude DC 11; initial and secondary
damage anesthetic. The save DC is Constitution-based.

The Consolidated Lycanthropy Guide (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=607.0) is very useful for finding animal options for lycanthropes.

I really do super duper appreciate all the help and advice!

I love getting lots of help from the people on this form directly, and from old forum posts I find!

For completeness, I think it should be mentioned that both the Lycanthropy guides suggested here, and that 'monster finder' link is technically incomplete, as it is missing at least some FRCS content (the Sewerm that I found for eg.).

I say this only for completeness if anyone stumbles upon this thread googling or whatever.

Thanks so much for help! I love it!
