View Full Version : Getting back banned schools?

Is there a way to regain banned schools of spellcasting as a focused specialist wizard?

After banning Illusion, Enchantment, and Necromancy, I'm finding social situations and the like to be a bit of a bore--I'm just a big stupid fighter with bigger weapons.

You could always use the retraining rules from the PHB II. You can swap your banned schools, or even stop being a focused specialist if you so choose. Probably the best way I know of.

Lost empires of faerun, three feats gets you one school back.

Also has greenbound summoning, spell disk, and phaerimm hatchlings.

Anychance you are an Elf? cause the Elf Wizard Racial Substitution rules are nice for this.

I am an elf, but I'm already Evoker 5.

So, retraining. It works on most things, really. If you made a decision, and want to have made a different one now, then retraining is a pretty reasonable solution.

they are:

spell reprieve: (specialist wiz 1) pick 1spell from banned school, now unbanned

item reprieve: (specialist wiz 5, spell reprieve) you can use items of your banned school normally

Arcane transfiguration: (specialist wizard 10, the other 2 feats) one school of magic (the school that you had banned and taken the earlier two feats on) now functions as though it were not banned

If one is a diviner level 10, then it is possible to be a non-specialist specialist wizard. From the sound of things, you are either a red Wizard or an incantatrix. Which is it? Or are you some kind of third thing?

I'm a Focused Specialist (CMage) Evoker.

But thanks, guys! I'll look into that feat chain. Not sure which school I really want back, though.

Incantatrixes have to specialize in Abjuration, and the OP mentioned being an evocation specialist. They're probably a focused specialist; they ban another school and lose one normally prepared spell per day and in exchange get two MORE specialist slots than regular specialists (for a total of three specialist slots)

EDIT: Swordsage'd, by the OP no less.

OP actually did not mention being an evocation specialist. however, +1 to you for being right anyway. well done.

I was asking primarily to see if it was too late for him to take the arcane transfiguration line (presuming he's interested)

OP, what is your build? of the 3 schools you banned, illusion is probably the most versatile. there's little ench gives that can't be replicated elsewhere, and necro is often a banned school since it's not very good if you don't specialize in it.

Evocation is my normal banned school of choice since there's very few problems solvable by a fireball and not solvable by a stinking cloud or a orb of fire or by throwing Haste on the big dumb fighter.

It's a reasonable banned school, but it has good things in it. Really, the problem is mostly that evocation blasting is mediocre. Evocation style utility, defense, and BFC is pretty decent. I mean, it's a list that has wind wall, resilient sphere, forcecage, wall of force, sending, and frigging contingency, and that's all in core. Fireball is far from the best evocation spell, in other words. Still, the school probably offers less unique stuff than most other schools, and shadow evocation covers a bit of the unique ground that evocation does.

By the by, that seems like a reasonable suggestion for the OP. If you feel like the many evocation spells you're preparing are turning you into a giant hammer, then maybe prepare some of the non-hammer spells. The school can do some pretty cool stuff if you let it.

They don't have to be specialized in Abjuration, they just can't have dropped it, and they can't drop abjuration or divination as the extra school.

Multiclass into Sorcerer and then go into Ultimate Magus. Pick up banned school spell spells with your Sorcerer spells known. Would require a fairly dramatic investment in levels though.
