View Full Version : PRC for a rogue with arcane tendencies

I know lots of similar threads may exist but let me point out what makes this one different.
There is a guy in our party playing the rogue class for first time. He usually goes for a spellcaster (druid or sorcerer) and thought he could try something different for that campain. Perhaps he thought it wouldn't last for long but as this proved to be the case he wants to change character and roll over a new, definately spellcasting one.
On the other hand, the DM isn't really excited about this change and he thinks the best way to deal with it is to multiclass. We are supposed to be core-restricted and campain setting is Dragonlance. My role here is to find some interesting PrC for this lvl5 rogue that would be both temting for the player to give up his thoughts and keep his old character and flavourish enough for our DM to allow it.
I know the player wants instant access to magic (arcane preferably) and by means of instant let this be right next level. He likes dark things (if he's wizard he playes necromancer) but he has to fit in a kinda good party with a definate good cleric in it. So not too much darkness. He doesn't like arcane trickster or assasin that come in core.
As for the DM, he doesn't like flashy op stuff and usually dislikes splatbooks. As long as he considers something is flavourish to him, he may not have a problem. He's really flexible when it comes to skill and feat prereqs but he keeps account for level entry. Eg you may not have all of the skills required but if the most important ones need to have 8 ranks you must be at least lvl 5.
My out of core knowledge is restricted to nature stuff only so i'm not the best for the job and i need some help. Any advice is welcome!
In case anyone proposes a PrC please refer the book it can be found and some of its flavor advantages.

Well, right out of the Core SRD box we got a good option in arcane trickster. Getting to that is kinda hard. Better to talk your DM into letting him take Unseen Seer from complete mage as his PRC.

Unseen Seer build

Rogue 4 / wizard 1 / Unseen Seer 10 / arcane trickster 5

You loose some skill points and a few dice of sneak attack to gain 16 levels of wizard casting.

Arcane Trickster is much ickier.

Rogue 3 / Wizard 5 / Arcane Trickster 10 / Rogue 2

You loose a good chunk of skill points and sneak attack to gain 15 levels of wizard casting.

Eh, can't he rebuild his character? It seems like a bard or (if he can get the DM to agree) factotum would be right up his alley.

The best PrC for him is certainly outside core, and it's called Chameleon (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/iw/20041210b). He could also take Assassin if he gets the DM to waive the alignment restriction, though.

These may be of some use.

If he can rebuild his character these could be some options for a roguish spellcaster.

Two other rogue prestige classes that grant spellcasting are Telflammar Shadowlord (Unapproachable East) and Cultist of the Shattered Peak (Lost Empires of Faerun

I have a special soft part for the dagger spell mage.

nothing like casting a spell as a sift action when you cna make a full attack, holding a touch attack spell in a dagger etc oh an 9/10 casting

the requiremnt of just using daggers really don't make too much of a difference to me, it a great class for rogue/caster types with a more martial caster in the thick of things build.

Unseen Seer is the best option ... but my second choice is Elocator (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/prestigeClasses/elocater.htm). Requires re-fluffing psionics as arcane stuff, though.

I would second daggerspell mage. It keeps the flavor but adds a little bit of fun. I have never played one and been disappointed. It's a relatively unique and fun class with a lot of flash.

If you haven't started yet, you could also change your base class to Beguiler, instead.

I suggest caution about making this rogue a necromancer...they are black robes. That being said our good group in the Key of Destiny series got help from a black robe, all high sorcery members are required to be able to work together for the betterment of magic. And if this DM is as strict as it seems you might want to stay away from setting specific PrC's...feats, spells, etc. At least when you ask don't go in expecting a yes. If your really restricted to core arcane trickster might be your only option. Either way I wish you luck in helping your friend.

In Core
Not too many options, all from the DMG.

Horizon Walker maybe, though it's 6 levels before you get anything flashy.

Shadowdancer is possible, but only vaguely magical.

Arcane Trickster is your best bet, but that requires the ability to cast level 3 spells.

Out of Core
Lots of options. Many have already been mentioned, but here are a few more.

A Warlock dip might work for him. It's not high OP, but that wasn't your question. 2, 4 then ultimately 6 levels maybe ?

A Spellthief might have been a better choice from the outset.

The Fey or Fiendish Heritage feats provide a few options without changing class.
