Branderscar Prison

Act One: Prison Break

http://i58.tinypic.com/2r2omes.jpg

In the kingdom of Talingarde, many crimes may send you to Branderscar Prison, but the sentence has but one meaning. You are wicked and irredeemable. Each of you received the same greeting when you arrived. You were held down by rough hands and branded upon the arm with a runic F. The mark signifies ‘forsaken’ and the painful scar is indelible proof that each of you has betrayed the great and eternal love of Mitra and his chosen mortal vassals.

Condemned, you face at best a life of shackles and servitude in the nearby salt mines. Others might await the “gentle” ministrations of the inquisitors so that co-conspirators may be revealed and confessions extracted. Perhaps,
some of you will be spared this ordeal. Perhaps instead you have come to Branderscar to face the final judgment. In three days, the executioner arrives and the axe falls or the pyre will be lit. Through fire or steel, your crimes will be answered.

You have all been chained together in the same communal cell dressed in nothing but filthy, tattered rags. Manhandled and mistreated, any finery you once possessed is either ruined or long lost. No special treatment has been given any prisoner – male or female, commoner or noble – all of the forsaken are bound and imprisoned together. Your feet are secured by iron cuffs tethered by one long chain. Your arms are secured to the wall above by manacles. A guard is posted right outside the cell day and night. Little thought is given to long term accommodations. At Branderscar, justice comes swift and sure.

Escape seems hopeless. You have all been well searched and every attempt to conceal anything on your person has failed. And if you could somehow slip your bonds and fly out of this prison, where would you go? Who from your former life would want anything to do with the forsaken? Despised, alone and shackled – all that you can do now is await your doom.

For each of you, your old life is over. For each of you, hope is a fading memory. For each of you, justice will be fairly meted. And who can blame fair Talingarde after what each of you has done?

"This is obscene. That I should be here held by these dogs." Kyronak looks around himself at the others in chains and those outside. He still stands tall and proud even in these rags. His long hair framing his face, dark with emotion.
"That these peons should hold me, because I chose to use the power I have rather than prance like some manicured, well trained horse, is nothing less than obscene."

Baarah chuckled dryly at the human's comment.

"You should know when you've been beaten, human." her voice was melodic, surprisingly soft for someone condemned in Brandescar, "The world is not kind on those who fight on when they should flee or submit."

She seemed surprisingly relaxed, as though her impending execution was nothing of note.

Geoffe yawns broadly as he listens to the other prisoners. "It isn't like death is the end for those with real power. These fools think they have won!" He yawns again.

"Several of you look to be more than your average prisoner, worth a good deal more alive than dead. In my profession that is all that matters... How did you get caught?" The slave trader looks bored with the situation and doesn't make eye contact with any of the other prisoners as he speaks.

"I really don't understand what the big fuss is about. It is just jail, right?" Reomava said absently, not really realizing where she is.

"Oh, I was caught by some guards after burning a church of Mithras to the ground. Nothing major. Sadly no one escaped I think. Oh well. " replies toward Geoffe.
How about you tall, dark, and brooding", Reomava smirks at Kyronak," How did the peons capture you?" Her snake-like tongue comes out and tastes the air.

Matthias stares at the wall of the cell, seemingly oblivious to the others around him.

Revealing the details of my imprisonment would invite unwelcome questions. I cannot allow these cretins to learn what I sought in that tomb. Doubtless they would use that information to barter for their own lives, and some other will claim the artifact. I will remain silent... for now...

Kyronak looks towards Baarah smiling. "I am not done with this life yet. I'll admit defeat when blood no longer flows in these Veins."

He looks to Geoffe "Caught? I was simply exercising my rights but these fools," He gestures outside the cell, "don't understand power."

He looks to Reomava, smiling at the mention of fire. "Jail? This is Branderscar prison. Few who come here leave and those who do leave are sent to mines to never be seen again."

"I was turned over by my own family." He spits. "I didn't even kill the fool and he most assuredly deserved to die."

"It does seem we are not a typical bunch of prisoners, even for Branderscar."

Baarah grinned back at Kyronak. "You failed to kill him? No wonder you were caught, only the strongest survive in this land."

She glanced over at Geoffe, "The guards didn't take kindly to my pro-active approach to improving the gene pool," she huffed, "Short-sighted if you ask me, protecting the weak brings nothing of worth."

"Why kill good, profit producing fodder? I dealt in human-livestock, and even when they bred it could be turned into a worthwhile venture. You just have to be open-minded about it," Geoffe replied with a smirk. "When they inevitably die they can be reused with the proper preparation and magic, so you don't really lose much. The trick is in getting the most out of them beforehand..."

He looks around the room, mentally sizing up one of the more quiet, fearful prisoners. Nodding in the direction of a woman who has been quietly weeping he says, "I could probably get several hundred gold for a physically healthy but emotionally beaten down specimen like that one there. With a minimum of food and clothing she could last for a couple of years before a good, tough taskmaster wore her out, at which point the corpse can be reanimated as a zombie. At that point it would be slower and less capable of caring for itself, but utterly tireless and trustworthy. It's a win-win situation!"

Geoffe's enthusiasm suddenly seems to disappear as a guard passes by the cell door. His smile smooths out and eyes as cold as any snake's stare down the man as he looks inside at the prisoners. "When I look at mewling sheep like this one, though, all I see is meat getting in the way of a good, obedient skeleton," he says dryly.

Kyronak laughs at Baarah. "I didn't fail to kill him, I was not planning on killing him. He was a mewling quim and I a treated him as such. If I had planned to kill him, he would have been dead."
"Still you seem to be lined up for the executioner as well."

Lum does not sit still, but shifts endlessly in his chains, his eyes darting around to examine every crack in the stone and rusted bar in hopes of finding some weakness.

"I didn't even kill him. I didn't even kill him and I'm stuck in this thrice-damned hell hole with you lot." He drops his eyes to inspect the manacles binding his wrists. "The bastard that set me up is going to pay. You can count on that."

Event One: An Unexpected Visitor

http://i62.tinypic.com/11twfog.jpg

A group of six guards, heavily armed and ready for trouble, come into the cell led by a fat well-dressed sergeant of the watch. Everyone recognizes Sergeant Thomas Blackerly. This was the man who held the brand that marked each of them. He laughed as their skin burned. Right now, though the sergeant seems a little dazed.

He points to Geoffrey and says gruffly, "You there! That's the scum! Get'm unshackled." He looks in the direction of the rest, "if any of you makes trouble, they'll earn a thrashing!" "Today is your lucky day, scum. You've got a visitor. How you ever warranted such a fine lady is beyond me. Seems she wants to say good-bye", He says as he looks back at Geoffrey. When Geoffrey is freed Thomas says, "now step lively. We wouldn't want to keep her waiting."

((OOC: Yes, this means that Arcanist's character couldn't pace around.))

When his shackles are released Geoffrey rises carefully, stretching slightly and massaging the blood back into his legs and hands. Then he nods in the direction of the sergeant and says, "Lead on, I suppose."

He then shrugs and follows the guards from the cell. If any try and push him around he stands or walks straighter, makes eye contact, and then turns away, ignoring their roughness.

Geoffrey is then roughly escorted to a meeting room down the hall and shoved into a chair. There waiting for Geoffrey was a hauntingly beautiful woman in an elegant black dress and soft silken veil. She looks as if she is headed to a funeral. Her hair is so platinum as to almost be white and her eyes are a vibrant almost unearthly green. She clearly has been weeping.

“Oh, dearest,” proclaims the unfamiliar woman. “I’m so relieved you’re alive!” She quickly turns to Tomas. “Could we please have a moment alone, good sir? For pity’s sake?”

Tomas goes blank for a bit and then quickly agrees. “Of course, my lady. For you,’ tis no problem.”

Geoffrey can't pinpoint what it is between Thomas and the woman but as soon as the guards leave, her demeanor immediately changes. She drops all pretense of grief or concern. She is immediately all business.

“Have you forgotten me, dearest?” the unexpected visitor says with a smirk, dropping her pretense of grief. “Call me Tiadora. We possess a mutual friend who would like to meet you and your fellow cell-mates. Unfortunately, our friend is unwilling to visit you in your present rather shabby accommodations so it seems you must escape. Don’t be so dour. Just because it’s never been done before is no reason you can’t be the first."

“If you manage that, cross the moors on the outskirts of town. On the old Moor Road you’ll see a manor house with a single lantern burning in the second story. There our mutual friend waits. That is all I know. He did want me to give you this.”

These embroidered items do not seem to be a matter of chance embellishment, and the Sergeant's behavior seems out of place in a high security prison like this. Have you enchanted him? Might we take advantage of your work and utilize his assistance in our escape?" Geoffe asks the lovely woman as he takes the veil and touches it gently.

Meeting Room

with the aid of detect magic, it radiates a blue aura (transmutation) and Geoffrey realizes it to be a Veil of Useful Items.

• 2 daggers
• Bullseye lantern (full, lit and shuttered)
• Hempen rope (50-foot coil)
• Sack full of needed spell components {for the spells you have prepared today} (worth less than a 1 gp) and common clothes in the PCs sizes
• Thieves Tools, Masterwork
• Window (2 ft. by 4 ft., up to 2 ft. deep)
• Potion of cure light wounds
• 100 gold pieces
• Unholy Symbol of Asmodeus (silver)
Note that the window patch will create a window (and therefore a hole) in a nearby wall. If there are no nearby walls, it simply turns into a common wooden window frame. It cannot be placed on a living creature however. Once removed, a patch cannot be replaced.

Tiadora smiles likely but only answers his last question, "This is a command he'd never obey. I've done all I can."

With her message delivered, she rises and the guards return. Immediately, her demeanor once more changes and she is again a perfect picture of grief. “No, I can’t bear to leave you!” She gives the PC a kiss on the cheek. The kiss is ice-cold and feels somehow alien and inhuman.

Tomas shakes his head. “I’m afraid it’s time, miss.”

She looks deep in Tomas’ eyes and says, “Thank you for letting me say good-bye. There’s no need to search my dearest. You are such a good friend for letting me see my dearest one more time.”

“Such a good friend,” Tomas repeats his voice almost mechanical. Then the watch sergeant seems to snap out of it and bows politely. “A pleasure, madam,” She leaves unveiled.

Her eyes meet the PCs one last time and she briefly gives them a wicked smile. “Three days,” telepathically echoes in the PC’s mind. “Don’t disappoint me, dearest”. The visitation concluded, the PC is taken back to his cell by a cadre of guards and shackled once more.

Returning to their cell, the PCs are again shackled. Once more they are secured in tightly locked bands around their ankles and their hands are shackled above their heads. As the guards leave the room, you can tell that only two of them will be in the guardroom as the one closing the door says, "I don't want to hear any noise from in here." And with that, the door is shut.

You don't know much about this place but you've heard rumors. Unfortunately those rumors were disproved when you first came here. the quickest way to leave as far as you know is the stairs through the guards room.

When Kyronak tried to pull on his cuffs to break them, he somehow slipped and made quite a bit of noise. "I heard it again!" one guard said and the other replied, "must be coming from the kitchen."

Geoffe watches in stoic amusement for several minutes while the other prisoners try to escape before responding to Reomava's comments in a whisper, "Conjugal visit? Don't be absurd. It is much better than that, I think."

Turning to those struggling with their bonds he says, "Save your efforts. The woman who called for me seems to think we warrant outside aid in our efforts to escape and provided me the tools to facilitate our exit from this place. Rather than alert the guards, let us talk about this opportunity and how we are to use it."

Once he has the others' attention he makes eye contact with each and continues. "If each of you can give me good reason to trust you, I will share what happened and the tools I now possess. Given that the alternative is death, I figure a simple agreement to fight as a team, leaving no one behind for any reason, until we are safely out of this prison and free will do. After we have escaped, there is further opportunity awaiting us all, but should you choose to abandon our benefactors, I won't make you come. I think a day's worth of immunity from retribution from the rest should suffice as well. What say you?"
----------------------------------

(Assuming everyone agrees to the terms given he explains what has happened, the small portion of the prisons he has seen, and the capabilities of the veil and the tools it will provide. Geoffe sees no reason to be stingy with tools he is not capable of using effectively such as the weapons, thieves' tools, and unholy symbol. However, he claims the contents of spell component pouch that relate to his prepared spells (Color Spray (http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/spells/colorSpray.html#_color-spray) is the only spell with material components he has prepared, so sharing is reasonable). Past that, he is cooperative with informing the rest so they can better prepare for their escape.)

"The reason to trust us is pretty simple," calmly says Kyronak, "And is the same reason we will trust you. As you said we are all sentenced to death and not one of us is likely going to escape on our own. Not only that, but any one of us could likely cause any escape to fail. We escape together or we fail together."

"I for one have no animosity towards anyone in this cell and am all for working together and seeing what this benefactor has in mind.

There are a couple of things known that you remember, even if some of them was a rumor. There is Thomas Blackerly, the Sergeant of the Watch. there is a rumor floating that he'll throw his guards to the wolves before he has to fight them.

There is also Mathias, the Warden of the Prison. rumors have been spread that he has a vast knowledge of arcane and has a library to match, though no proved has come forward about either.

There is one more rumor you've heard but this could be just a tale told to children to scare the daylights out of them from when you heard. There is said to be a big brute that tries everyday to leave Branderscar to start going to town to town to eat children who aren't asleep when he passes by.

Branderscar Prison used to be a costal castle named Castle Branding. 80 years ago the last war the castle ever saw was the war between House Barca and House Darius. After that it served no military purpose and was converted to a prison.

When Geoffrey tries to break the manacles and fails, the guards realized something was going on in the cellblock. One guard stood in the doorway while the other move over to the cell to find out what was going on. They both had their clubs out and at the ready but the one at the doorway also had his other hand on a trumpet ready to grab and use it if necessary.

When the guard moving into the room got to the celldoor, he saw Kyronak trying to free himself. The guard quickly unlocked the door and moved over in front of Kyronak and smirked as he hit Kyronak's feet hard {3 NL Damage}. He then looks around at the other prisoners before finally locking the celldoor and leaving again. "we're listening now" the guard leaving said, just before he slammed the door shut again.

With that he removes the thieves' tools from the veil, tosses them into his lap, and then casts Prestidigitation (http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/spells/prestidigitation.html#_prestidigitation), slowly lifting them and nudging them towards the lockpick.

If you can hit them at range, aim for the one in the rear while those going in close need to hit the lead guard.

"Your ego is showing, Kyronak. I have no need to insult you, you're doing a fine job of that yourself.

Regardless of what plan we choose, they are going to see us unshackled and ready to kill. It's a question of whether there's an entire room between us and them at that moment. If we are here when they come through the door, we kill them immediately; no fuss, no screams for help, no alarms. If we have to go to them, they have plenty of time to call for reinforcements, escape, or hells know what else before we have the chance. But if your personal pride is injured by the idea of being used as bait, then far be it from me to force the issue; I'll rattle the chains myself."
