Every month Something Awful's Traditional Games subforum has a game design contest. (http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3606458)

In keeping with February's theme of love, we must design a fantasy heartbreaker. (http://rpgtalk.wikia.com/wiki/Fantasy_heartbreaker) Although it can be a knock-off of any popular table-top game out there.

So I threw my hat into the ring, participating for the grand prize of delicious candy or ten bucks on Drive-Thru RPG.

Do you like old school D&D mechanics with some 3rd Edition thrown in? Do you like film noir, crime dramas, and monster PCs?

Well then, have I got the retroclone for you! Check in every so often throughout the month for periodic updates!

Opening Fiction, set to Jazz Music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwvVhXItl1w)

Oliver conjures a light spell with his finger to brighten up the dim alleyway, then puts it up to the end of his cigar, careful to rub his fur out of the fire’s range. Even through the smoke he smelled the familiar scent of blood, and his senses told him that this case was murder even before he saw the mangled corpse. A harpy clad in a constable’s uniform flew down between the rain-slick buildings to reunite with her ground-bound partner.

“There’s a broken balcony three stories up,” she said. “The victim wrestled with something fierce before falling down here.”

“You’re telling me, Anaka,” Oliver said as he coughed up some smoke. “Look at these wounds; claw marks at the shoulder and the legs. Our perp’s either a big ****ing dog, or a werewolf.”

The two of them knew that it was an Anthropic. An ordinary canine would bite its victim, and there were no large vicious predators roaming the streets of Ivanost. In the dim light Oliver’s eyes spotted a folded piece of paper in one of the jacket pockets.

It was a political poster, showing a frightened elven couple and their daughter traversing a city street. The leering eyes and grasping arms of goblins, gnolls, gargoyles, and other such folk surrounded them, all drawn in exaggerated and menacing caricatures.

Are your streets safe at night? A vote for Strega is a vote for Ivanost’s families!

Anaka sneered. “So he’s one of those types? I wouldn’t be surprised if he provoked our killer in a fight.”

Oliver frowned (or at least the closest approximation a gnoll could give) as he contemplated this. “Just what we need, another “Anthropic slash Humanoid killing.” Either way, this looks bad. A murder like this is just what those reactionaries need to sway humanoid opinion against our communities. If it’s a political killing, then our attacker might strike again.”

“In that case I can’t say I’m really motivated to stop him.”

“Don’t forget that badge you’re wearing, Sargeant!” Oliver said as he pointed to Anaka’s uniform. “We’re to protect and serve everyone, not just the folks we like! And we don’t need one of our own going around killing, especially not in this climate!”

Anaka shot him a glare before venturing over to the callbox to brief the precinct on their finding. It wasn’t the first time a Strega supporter got into a fight with local Anthropics, or the cops. Whoever killed this human likely had allies, and he wouldn’t win any popularity contests among his kin for catching the culprit as could be evidenced by Anaka’s reaction. Oliver sighed; he could tell it was going to be one of those nights.

Thank you for the compliments!

I'm currently developing the setting over time. Check I'm writing new stuff just about everyday, so check the Google Document every so often.

I do have plans on making it a full RPG, but the contest is primarily for setting design than an entire Corebook. For the time being I'm continuing the development the Ivanost District of Silvergate Springs. I will also go into more detail on daily life and culture as well.

Due to some changes in the contest, the holder would prefer it if the weekly entries were in separate documents.

Changelog:

The "main" document is now just Chapter One: Character Creation.

All of the work I did for Chapter Two: Setting can be found here. (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zHLVxkepfSNcpkNLzhyrWQPBWgJEvkKep31zaGlUfOw/edit)

And I edited the original post to reflect this.

This week's contest involves fleshing out the factions of the setting. As I detailed several of the organizations in Chapter Two, this means I'll be copying a lot of previous stuff, but I did expand the existing entries along with creating new ones.

The new link should be in the original post.
