So I've been invited to a 3.x/PF hybrid game (read as DM doesn't seem to know which is what) and I've been okayed to play an Artificer. A Goliath who is seeking the fabled Mechanomicon and its legendary Dragon Mech style Construct knowledge.

Anyway, I've never played PF and I am at a loss as to what is different between PF Artificers and 3.x Artificers. I've heard tellt hat PF doesn't use xp to craft? Is this right? Do spells Artificer Infusions that normally take xp still use it? (I'm looking at you Spell Storing Item Infusion!)

Any help or advice welcome. Intending to build Effigys with this guy too so help with adapting them to PF welcome as well.

Thanks regardless Playground.

At least in my group, all XP costs from 3.5 are now 5 GP per 1 XP.

Crafting doesn't cost XP any more - it's just gone. Prices are still the same, GP and time-wise. May want to read up on the rules, though, there are more skill checks than before.

We did this in a game my wife and I played in. We basically took all XP costs for crafting, multiplied by 5, and called it a GP cost. Did the same thing to the craft reserve, etc. Worked out fine.

The whole 1 XP = 5 give is basically how pathfinder handled the spells and crafts that cost XP.

For example:
3.5 wish (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/wish.htm) = 5000 xp
Pathfinder wish (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/w/wish) = 25000 gp

I believe it was already an optional rule in the 3.5 DMG long before pathfinder did it too. So it's also applicable for 3.5 games if your DM allows it.

Besides there are no pathfinder artificers, ignoring the one third party (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/3rd-party-classes/adamant-entertainment/artificer) I just found and the tons of conversations I have seen.
But because pathfinder removed the xp costs for crafting and and spells, you need to do some tinkering with the artificer class to make it fit in a pathfinder world. The easy solution I remember was to re-imagine the Craft Reserve and Retain Essence in GP value (remember 1 xp = 5 gp in PF). It probably needs more tinkering then that, but a start is a start.

Here's the version I'm using currently in a "Mostly Pathfinder" game.
https://sites.google.com/site/eberronpathfinder/conversion-info/classes/artificer Keep in mind, it's basically a homebrew conversion, though it does keep the same overall flavor, while doing away with the Craft Reserve and reworking Retain Essence. It works pretty well for me so far.
