Hey! Me and my friend recently got into D&D. There live no one near us that we know of that might be interested in role playing-games (i live in a kind of crappy place).

So for now, we are me and him. I'm Dungeon Master and he's the player.

For now, we have had great fun, and i can imagine we will keep having fun.

However, the campaign I'm running is completely "open-ended". He started in a tavern, and could do whatever he wanted to. He succeeded in: Burning down approx. 6 houses, getting a village, getting a really good katana, become stinking rich and finally make a terror-attack at a corrupt city.

But to make sure it doesn't get boring for him at some point, do any of you have any ideas for plot hooks/plots or miniquests? The main plot going on right now is a close-to-war going on between two major cities (one of them the one he made a terror attack on).

On another side note: Do you guys have any recommendations for newbie-friendly play-by-post forums or homepages. Or maybe some homepage/whatever that organizes D&D games over some IM?

Thanks

Check out the games listed on this board's "Looking for Players" section. Make sure to ask if the DM is willing to teach/train. Here: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=21

For your friend, I'd suggest checking out WotC's list of downloadable adventures (here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/oa/20030530b). Most of them have a CR level. For a single player, you want to make sure he's at least 4 levels above the CR level and maybe 6. You might also consider adding a sidekick for him that you play, or letting him play the sidekick and his own character. Two characters can do a lot more than twice what one can do.

For the plot question, well you can check out the articles on the wizards' site or forums, those help. As does just googling D&D plot hooks.

I recommend adding a NPC if you think you're up to it. It would increase interaction between characters that doesn't exist in the lone wolf person. Everyday things roleplayed out, etc.

Newbie-friendy PbP games? Um....here? Just check out the PbP section and look for anything that says recruiting, state your newbie status and ask if anyone would be willing to help.

edito ^ or just stand around and be simi'd. that might work...

A number of One on One Adventures (http://www.warehouse23.com/search.cgi?pline=One+on+One+Adventures) are available from Expeditious Retreat Press. The Free Downloadable Adventures (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/oa/20030530b) provided by Wizards that Amotis is referring to are not one on one, but could fairly easily be adapted.

Gestalt (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/gestaltCharacters.htm) might be a good option for a single player to be able to do fill more roles and do more things. that way he can handle magic, or dungeons, or heal himself and still be able to fight or whatever he needs to do without the need for the interdependence of party members. Leadership (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/feats.htm#leadership) could also be handy once he hits 6th level: that gives him a sidekick that can handle the tougher stuff, and minions, that can do busy work, or cast cantrips and such.

The guys over at Fantasygrounds used to do a semi-regular demonstration game using their software to play DND over the Internet that might be interesting to play - for a look at the software as well as a chance to steal techniques from other players and an experienced DM... They also have a game calendar that has a fair number of games that are open for new players, some of which are come when you like as opposed to expecting regular participation.

Kloogewerks, WebRPG and OpenRPG are all nice platforms for playing with others in realtime online as well. Associated pages have game listings and such.
