Breaking into Survival-Horror

Greetings Playgrounders,

long time no see.


I have decided to get back in touch with my love of horror and creepy things.

at which point I discovered I don't actually own any survival-horror/scary video games.

I must confess I am equally perplexed and disappointed by this discovery.


this is where you come in.

I am seeking the playground's recomendations for scary video games/survival horror.

the only game I'm aware of that I'd prefer people didn't recommend is Dead Space, I sat in on a friend playing it a few times and it just didn't appeal to me.

as for what platforms, I won't be buying any PC games, my toaster can barely handle what I've already got.

I am eager to hear suggestions for....
Playstation 1 and 2
Xbox
Xbox 360
Gamecube
Wii - but only if they're set up to use the gamecube controllers.

The older Resident Evil games (Zero (GCN) 1, 2, 3 (PS1, GCN), and Code Veronica (PS2, GCN, XBOX 360) do atmospheric and body horror quite well, although it tends to rely too much on jump scares, especually in the later games. Starting with 4 they went for more of an action shooter.

Silent Hill 1-3 also do this quite well. (They never tried to change it, but the later games seem much less well executed.)

The Fatal Frame series is also very good.

I apologise for breaking thread rules immediately, but what if the PC game in question was free, fairly short, and could work on basically any computer (owing to being on RPG Maker)?

Because Witch's House (http://vgperson.com/games/witchhouse.htm) is nothing short of incredible, and takes about two hours of your time. I encourage everyone to try it.

I'd agree with the previous suggestion of Fatal Frame.

Eternal Darkness on the Gamecube is a good one too.

Seconding Eternal Darkness, it's one of the most atmospheric horror games I've ever played.

That said, there's been a lot of really interesting indie horror games released on PC lately: Amnesia; Dark Descent, Outlast etc. If there is a way for you to get a hold of a decent PC this genre of games would probably grow dramatically.

So you want to dive into survival horror, but you can't play PC games and therefore you can't play Amnesia The Dark Descent...

Y'know what? Do you like FPS games? Or TPS games? How about 3D platformer games? JRPGs? Cuz I hear there are really good console games that do that...

Silent Hill 2. That is all.

Try being introduced to SH1 by playing it at 1030 or later at night because you can only play it after your youngest brother has gone to sleep, and your other younger brother takes every opportunity to sneak up on you while you're playing it. To this day I still can't play that game for more than an hour at a time due to the sheer ammount of horror/fear that game invokes in me.

SH2 is brilliant and you should play that as well. SH3 is alright.

I know you said no PC games, but Half-Life 2 certainly has its moments, HL2:Episode 1 even more so. They're old enough even your computer should be able to play them unless it's a real Smithsonian piece.

Seconding Eternal Darkness, it's one of the most atmospheric horror games I've ever played.

Consider it thirded.
