In 205 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0205.html), Haley bets against Durkon that he can't convince her to go to Azure City with Miko. She says that if he loses, she will take half of his treasure. He convinces her to go when he points out that it will be a free trip to a big city. However, as 129 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0129.html) shows, Durkon had much more than 2000 gp at the time. Since Haley said that she would have only needed 1000 gp to go to a different major city, she did something that she didn't want to do and lost money doing it. Why did Haley do it?

because of the magic word "Free" most likely. She would still need to go to a city to actually USE any of that wealth, and while she may be obsessive about it, she has never been shown to survive off of greed alone; shed have a rough time lugging it all by herself to any major city, bags of holding or no. Not to mention other rogues would be more than happy to ambush and kill her for it.

Haley claimed that she could have gotten Elan to go with her, so that would have made it easier for her to defend herself and carry the gold. Also, what is more likely? Her going with the psychotic paladin to court and getting killed and losing her money, or a bunch of random rogues stealing her money from her?

Money in Durkon's pocket = Haley's money that she just hasn't got around to stealing yet. (Of course, the increasingly-enlightened Haley might well choose to invest it in upgrading her tame cleric, i.e. Durkon.)

Therefore, the free trip wasn't an alternative, it was as well as Durkon's wealth.

because of the magic word "Free" most likely.I think this is it, all by itself. Haley couldn't get herself to mentally accept paying for something she was going to get for free, not even if it would be profitable; her sweat and shaking in the second-to-last panel suggest near-panic at the thought.
