So my friend is claiming that there is a spell that wakes people up when something approaches them. Do you guys know if there really is a spell like this. (This isn't for a specific game situation, he's designing a wizard for a game I'm running and he's picking out spells and he can't seem to find it.) Thanks in advance!

Alarm in the srd and players handbook does this in a 20 foot radius.

Thanks, it turns out he managed to find it already, he was actually thinking of Vigilant Slumber from Complete Mage.

Mordenkainen's Faithful Hound (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/magesFaithfulHound.htm) is a fun one. It conjures an invisible dog that guards a 30-foot radius area. If anything moves into that area, it starts barking loudly; if anything comes within 5 feet of the dog, it bites them. Its bite is considered magic for DR purposes.

Alarm (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/alarm.htm) is a simpler one; it sets off an alarm, either audible or mental (mental wakes you up) when a Tiny or larger creature enters the area. This one does precisely what you want, but lacks the (pardon the pun) bells and whistles of Faithful Hound.

EDIT: Gah, swordsage'd. Did I fall asleep on the job?

You are too cool to have been created in this world. What's your origin?

Just remember to actually tell you DM you are casting it, or you risk getting surounded by Ogres (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-leYc4oC83E)...

I'm secretly the last scion of a planet made of concentrated badass. The planet detonated after reaching the Awesome Singularity, spraying wicked coolness across the cosmos, and firing its only survivor towards Earth, in a space-ready baby carriage shaped like a rabid wolverine with flame decals on the side (they make it go faster), playing Dio's "Holy Diver" on endless loop.

Nah. That couldn't possibly be right.

Back on point, you could set up a contingent Dawn spell, from Spell Compendium. Fort save negates, all sleeping creatures in a 15-foot radius awaken. Easy-peasy, lemon-squeezy.

There's also Rouse (Player's Handbook II) which is the Arcane version of Dawn

If that happens I'll just turn my bag of holding inside out and walk through the dungeon walls. (http://tindeck.com/listen/happ)
