I do a lot of homebrewing. But I usually stay away from making up my own monsters. Because I find the rules in the back of the MM to be quite difficult to follow, and they seem quite arbitrary. Not that I mind making arbitrary decision. They don’t seem to have any formulas to follow or anything that might make the process easier to follow.

While I could sit down and pound out my own generator, I was wondering if anyone knew where I could possibly find one?

This is the closest thing I can think of. Just enter the appropriate parameters and choose a link.

Well, that is cool. I don't suppose that has any monsters other than the ones in the SRD, though, right?

Yeap, only SRD.

That’s not exactly what I'm looking for (and I already knew about it)

So thanks for nothing :smallwink:

Seriously thanks anyway.

Yeah, new monsters, that's great and all... but monsters with class levels, now that's where the fun is to be had.

I think the monsters in the available books provide lots of interesting things. Keep in mind that you can always change the flavour of existing monsters, add class levels, add HD, give a few extra abilities, etc etc.

Making monsters is easy! Figuring out the CR for those monsters...will break your head. There are a few websites that will give you some kind of estimate, such as Soldarin's ECL Calculator (http://personal.nbnet.nb.ca/shadows/Handbook/ECLcalc.html), although as noted that's ECL not CR or EL. There's also a lot of talk nowadays about the "Feature Point" system discussed here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=667683), but as far as I can tell no one's made anything like an automated generator. Heck, the system hasn't been fully released by it's creator, yet.

Thanks for the info guys, it helps me a lot. That ELC calculator comes close, but its not quite what I’m looking for.
When it comes to making one, this is what I have in mind:

I plan on using an excel document to generate monsters, giving me a list of such options to choose from such as type, sub type, hit dice, ability scores, saving throws etc.

Basically I want to be able to select creature type from a drop down menu, this would give me a number in a “total” column. Then I go to the next row and pick a sub type from another drop down menu this would give me another number in the “total” column. I continue until I get all the information pertaining to the monster I wish to create. Then it calculates the total and gives me a (fairly accurate) CR.

Doesn't the Homebrewing Guide have something on this?

Found it

I want something where I can punch in type, hit dice, bab, saves, etc and get an approximated CR.
edit:
I'm going to change this from am excel document to an html one (since that's easier to do), now i need to get this html stuff to work... grr.

Edit again
Well things are starting to shape up, its been like ten years or so since I did any HTML work so things aren't going very fast, plus I’m having to look up stuff just to refresh myself here.
