Multi part kindle question

Ok, lets do this. First off, is there any way to make it so my kindle can buy from the barnes and noble Nook library?

If yes, can I use a barnes and noble gift card to make my purchases through it?

Best you can hope for is buying an e-book via computer from B&N that both doesn't have DRM, and is in one of the generic formats that Kindle supports, then tranferring it to your Kindle library manually.

Actually, it depends on if you have a Kindle or a Kindle Fire. If you have one of the Fire tablets, there are ways (http://www.amazon.com/forum/kindle?cdForum=Fx1D7SY3BVSESG&cdThread=Tx2DHF98A6GLHGO) to run the Nook application on a Kindle Fire. The link is to the appropriate discussion on Amazon's forums. The catch is you have to be willing to install 3rd party Apps which may be a warranty voider since they are coming from outside Amazon.

Note: I haven't tried this myself as I'm using an i-Pad mini these days. But one of my friends switched from a Nook to a Fire HD and has done so.

As long as you can download the e-book file to your PC, you can use Calibre (http://calibre-ebook.com/) to convert the file to a .mobi file, then e-mail it to your Kindle (or side load it if you have a USB cable).

If your file has DRM, I hear there are plug-ins for Calibre you can download which will strip the DRM, thus allowing you to convert it.

I use calibre to organize my e-books, but most of them are from places like Baen with no DRM. I don't know what it will do with Nook files, but with Kindle files bought from Amazon it won't convert them or view them - just index them and load them on to my Kindle for me - so it probably won't do Nook to Kindle conversion for any DRM'd file...

Nook uses the .epub format right?
Kindle uses .mobi format.

Any program (like Calibre) that will convert the two formats will function, presuming you get the file itself first.

Of course DRM may or may not be a factor which depend more on the publisher and the title. Under the DMCA removing that is technically illegal in the States. There are exceptions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Millennium_Copyright_Act#Anti-circumvention_exemptions) but you'd need to consult a lawyer IRL for an exact answer. And I can't find much in the way of an actual case record to provide any clarity I'm afraid.
