Welcome to this game of Civilization V Gods and kings. Mostly because I don't have Brave new world. So I will be let's playing this game instead.

But this won't just be my game. You'll have control over what I produce, what polices I take. You even determine the make up of the world. You have become gods, and I your humble high priest. Trying to stay afloat in a sea of troubles.

A few notes

I will be playing on Prince difficulty. Any higher and I'm not sure I'll be able to win (I haven’t played all that much)

This game will start in Ancient era, so that we may guide the civilization from it's humble beginnings to wherever it may lead.

The game pace will be standard.

Resources will be standard.

So first things first, is to select our civilizations, and vote if we get to pick our opponents civilizations and if so what they should be.

Our starting civilization gives us a unique ability, two of unique units, or buildings, and lean towards a particular starting area The civilizations, and what bonuses they give, will be explained as we go along.

If you have never played Civilization before, just vote for your favorite nation. If you really want to know, I can give you individual civilization abilities.

America, Arabian, Austrian, Aztecs, Babylonian, Byzantine, Carthaginian, Celtic, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Egyptian, English, Ethopia, French, German, Greek, Hunnic, Indonesian, Incan, Indian, Iroquois, Korean, Japanese, Mayan, Mongolian, Ottoman, Persian, Polynesian, Rome, Russian, Siamese, Songhai, Spanish, Swedish,

Then we have a bunch of options to further edit the map.

For additional game options, I only put on Policy saving. If people really want me to select an additional game option. I'll do so, but otherwise standard all the way.

Highlands is surprisingly fun. No good for naval play, but you can set up excellent choke points in the mountains with the right map generation options.

Won't work. You have to go up the tech tree quite a bit before you get the ability to cross oceans. Or even enter water at all with a land unit, actually.

Unless, of course, you start from later than ancient times, I guess...

Edit: Dammit, didn't do my research on Polynesian special ability before posting this.

That's why you do it with Polynesia. But the one time I did that, you end up so handicapped on tech that it's difficult to catch up.

The way to make it reasonable is to settle on the original continent, go liberty settler rush, and the colonize the new world. But that's significantly less fun.

As interesting as that sounds for a Dark sun/Civilization remix. I would first need to know how to do that.

On Steam go Library -> Tools -> Sid Meier's Civilization V SDK (install and run) -> WorldBuilder -> New Map (gives you all the normal ingame map generation options) -> generate, then manually paint the map desert.
This removes features that couldn't normally exist on desert tiles (forest, jungle, some natural wonders, etc.) and you have to paint around the lakes, but flood plains, oasises, hills, mountains and all the resources stay even when painted over (and would need to be removed with the Edit Plot option if dune-bananas are unacceptable :smalltongue:)
Once done and saved, it appears in the maptype list in Advanced setup.

Yes, though i'm not sure if the map generation checks for DLC owned when placing natural wonders so they might need to check to make sure no BNW natural wonders sneaked in.
Another thing to keep in mind is that re-randomizing the resources on an all-desert map results in 0 horses/coal (and general sparseness, but that's a feature), so silly resource spawns would need to be left in or removed individually (personally, i'd leave them in and refluff them appropriately bizarrely).
Lastly, the only flood plains would be the originally generated ones as they don't autospawn around desert+rivers, so generating the base map with Hot + Arid is advisable.
Luckily the game is smart enough to pick random yet viable starting positions so there is no need to manually place those.
I'm pretty sure the SDK is available even to those who don't have the game, pretty much anyone could make the map and upload it on the steam workshop or the like.

Wouldn't you immediately know the appearance of the map, then? That seems like it would ruin the fun of it.
A larger map in full view is zoomed out to the point of not really spoiling anything unless one actively tries to memorize (or has photographic memory i guess) instead of simply painting over anything not clear blue (this is why you generate with Small Lakes, seas could result in beached whales due to the default large icons obscuring the blue).
Another option is simply sacrificing the lakes by sweeping the map with the colossal brush size. Takes about 3 seconds so the map info would amount to 'plenty of sand'.

Edit: I made a couple of Sea of Sand maps using [Highlands/Large/Ranges/Dense/Hot/Arid/Small Lakes/Standard resources] as the generating base. Two maps with a Weird World (resources left as generated) and Barren (Scatter Resources function, so only sparse amounts of desert-native resources and no horses/coal) versions of both. Should work without BNW.
Steam Workshop decided to be uncooperative, so any ideas where to upload?

.... Darkness.... and green..... Is this a dream? I.... My name is Simon.... Where... Where's my family?

I started as the Polynesian nation. My unique special ability is that my units all start with the ability to move over any water tile. (Other civilizations need early game tech to move over some water, and mid game tech to move over all water.), my units get additional sight while over water, and gain 10% combat strength if near a Moai (A unique tile improvement I have access to).

I have the Maori warrior unique unit. Which is like the standard warrior unit, but enemies nearby take a combat penalty.

I have the Moai unique tile improvement. Which can be built after researching construction. Moai's give culture bonuses which stack for multiple Moai's in a row. After I research flight (A late game tech), they each give a 1 gold bonus.

I woke up suddenly in some tent with a woman rushing into the it.
My name is Lady Priscilla, High Priest Ryan. She said as she bowed. Or Curtsied I could never remember which was which.
What?
I am the commander of the Polynesian....
What in the abyss is the Polynesian?
The Polynesian are a proud nation of hard workers....
Yeah, yeah... Why don't we go over this slowly.

Lady Priscilla gave me several maps detailing the surrounding areas. She suggested I give a long thought about where to place our people to start our Civilization.
http://i838.photobucket.com/albums/zz304/Draka393/2014-02-23_00004_zps825925fd.jpg (http://s838.photobucket.com/user/Draka393/media/2014-02-23_00004_zps825925fd.jpg.html)
She showed her architectural charts, and said my job was to divine the will of the gods. But I'm just a kid. What do I know about the affairs of state?

Food is used to determine city growth. Each city level, is a citizen that is working on a tile producing resources for the civilization. Each citizen costs 2 food units. Every turn any excess food is stored. If your food storage reaches a certain level, the food storage is reduced to zero, the city “levels up” and you get a new citizen. Meanwhile if the city is incapable of producing enough food to support all it's citizens, it will eat into the food storage. If this hits zero, your city “levels down”. Areas by water tend to produce more food.

Production is simple, each city has a list of things you can build. You select one thing at a time. Each unit, building or wonder has a certain amount of hammer cost, Each turn the city's production is subtracted from the hammer cost, and if the cost reaches zero, the unit or building or wonder is built. Hills and Forests tend to produce more production.

Gold is also simple. Each unit and building (but not wonder) has a gold cost. Which is a lot more expensive then their hammer cost. However if you have enough gold, you can simply buy the unit, getting it instantly. Gold can also be traded away to other civilizations. Gold is found by water, and my improving luxury resources

Science is used to make new technology. You choose what you want to research, and each technology has a cost. You pay that cost every turn with the science you produce, and when that hits zero, you get the technology. Science is gained by city levels.

Faith is used to start a religion. Religions gain benefits to you, and to each city that has them. Faith is given by certain buildings.

Culture. Culture is used to buy social policies that give the civilization a certain benefit. We gain a small amount of culture right now, and certain buildings increase it. Each city producing culture, also gains more tiles it the area it can work on.

Happiness makes your civilization grow smoothy. The bigger your civilization is, the more unhappiness you produce. If you unhappiness equals or exceeds your happiness you take penalties. If you have spare happiness, it gets hit into the gold diamond. If the gold diamond’s first number ever hits the second number, we gain a golden age which gives additional benefits.

http://i838.photobucket.com/albums/zz304/Draka393/2014-02-23_00005_zpsb9563a8e.jpg (http://s838.photobucket.com/user/Draka393/media/2014-02-23_00005_zpsb9563a8e.jpg.html)
She also stated that once we start settling down, we could begin working on certain things.... But I'm not sure what these things mean.

Workers are a simple unit, they can build a number of improvements for terrain, allowing us to use the terrain we do have more effectively. As we gain more technology, we gain more advantages.

Maori warrior is our current basic infantry. It fights our opponents can be used to look around our starting area.

Scouts are weaker then Maori warriors, but have a easier time moving over harsh terrain.

The monument is a building that increases our culture per turn, in this city.

We can't start building a Settler until our city hits level 2

And she told me these were the things people could study.

So I think I will update in ten turn spurts.

So where should I place my city?, and what should I call it?

What should I use as my build order?

What should my research order be?

Hydranova

Citywise? Well, I prefer Big, Giant Blobs, but I'd look for somewhere hilly (or coastal). I can't think of a good name, alas.

Build Order? I think a monument would be good.

Research order, I for one think we should rush the Great Library.

On a side notice, I see that you're next to three hills. I believe this calls for some manual labor via citizen management. After all, who needs food when you have hammers?

Always scout first for build order. Finding a +1 pop or culture ruin will put you ahead compared to a monument first. And you'll meet more CSs for that free gold or faith.

Now the question is, are we going wide or are we going tall? Wide: i'd say scout monument shrine. Tall: I'd say scout shrine scout and take the free monument from tradition.

Lady Priscilla and I talked. And decided to set the people down, just where we were. We named this settlement Derptastic. I had a flash of inspiration and asked for the people's attention to be focused on building a scouting regiment, and on something to hold things with.

The next day. Lady Priscilla came to me, with sliver streaks in her hair. She was sixty, and I had slept for forty years. She mentioned that working on the things I asked of her, was proving difficult. Food still took up the majority of my citizens lives.

Another day for me, another forty years for my people. I hope I haven't been absent from my family for this long. Lady Priscilla was remarkably still alive. A one-hundred year old woman. It a land without pots. She knew the end was coming soon, and welcomed it. Or at least was okay with it. We spent a long day just talking. Like two old friends, even though I had only known her for two days.

Lady Priscilla died during my long sleep. I wish she had lived long enough for me to attend her funeral. But she's been dead and buried for over a decade. A new woman, Lady Priscilla the second woke me this morning. She mentioned she had been informed about me before the Late Lady Priscilla's the first's death. She mentioned that the group's hunters had found an ancient ruin from a forgotten time. They were actually exploring the ruins that day. She expected a report later today.

Even more people to rule over, I suppose. Lady Priscilla the Second mentioned how that meant my orders would go through faster. I just marveled at how it had been over a hundred years and they hadn't built pots, or gotten enough people for a scouting troop.

Lady Priscilla the second was getting old also. It was a shame. Only connecting with these people once or twice over their long lives, while I barely age a day. What has happened to my body, that it stops aging, and sleeps for so long?

The hunters sent back a excited note. They found a beautiful rock that jutted out of Mother Earth's skin covered in blood. At least that what Lady Priscilla the second paraphrased. Hmm. In another world she could have been a poet.

Today, was a somber day, Lady Priscilla the second died this morning. She who had who had ruled over the most prosperous time of the Polynesian people had died. Lady Priscilla the Third, hadn't taken any oaths or made any speeches yet. But everyone looked to her as leader.
http://i838.photobucket.com/albums/zz304/Draka393/2014-02-24_00009_zps68eaf4b2.jpg (http://s838.photobucket.com/user/Draka393/media/2014-02-24_00009_zps68eaf4b2.jpg.html)
Today, was just full of surprises. Now the hunting troop had found more ruins, and in those ruins. Material wealth. While this was a much more happy surprise then Lady Priscilla the Second's death, Lady Priscilla the Third literally jumped with glee. Maybe she was just happy to receive good news after the death of her mother.

I questioned Lady Priscilla the third today. It had been over 200 years. When were the people finally going to figure out basic pottery. It's not that hard. And about that scouting troop I kept asking for. I admit I chewed her out, a bit more then may have been her fault. But still. For something so simple a concept. It had taken 200 years, and they aren't done yet...

Well Lady Priscilla the third had some good news today. Our people had finally managed to clobber together a scouting troop. Lady Priscilla the third looked so old. It was frightening to think a week for me, was almost three hundred years for them. I told Lady Priscilla the third to start building a monument to Lady Priscilla the First, to inspire people.

Another night, another death. Lady Priscilla the Third also died. I found out this morning by Lady Priscilla the Fourth. She told me that the scouting troop had been sent to the lands Northwest, and returned with some info of the surrounding area. Every day for me the maps grew larger.

From the journals of the High Priest of Polynesia 3640 BC

Lady Priscilla the Fourth finally came to me and mentioned that my people had finally invented pottery. I jumped for joy at the prospect of them finally figuring out.

Pottery is a technology that allows for the construction of two buildings. The Granary and the Shrine. The Granary increases food production of the city, allowing to increase in levels faster, the shrine is our first faith building. If we want a religion, we should make this as soon as possible.

I told Lady Priscilla the Fourth to start working on a way to communicate symbols together. I think I let slip writing, but she didn't seem to notice.

From the journals of the High Priest of Polynesia 3600 BC
http://i838.photobucket.com/albums/zz304/Draka393/2014-02-24_00015_zps23a43fd0.jpg (http://s838.photobucket.com/user/Draka393/media/2014-02-24_00015_zps23a43fd0.jpg.html)
Lady Priscilla the Fourth collapsed in front of me today. It's strange how they all live hundred years, and then die. The naming is less strange, many people where I came from would called their son or daughter X junior. Well not common, but I had heard of it.
http://i838.photobucket.com/albums/zz304/Draka393/2014-02-24_00016_zps67b229b0.jpg (http://s838.photobucket.com/user/Draka393/media/2014-02-24_00016_zps67b229b0.jpg.html)

Am I literally at the edge of the world? Is Highlands not round?

2 What do you vote on.

a We can build a Settler, Scout, Maori warrior, Worker, Granary, and Shrine. What should we build after the Monument is done?

b What should we research after writing?

c Should we spend gold? Or not. If so, what on?

You have till at least noon on Wednesday EST to vote, possibly longer.

3 Any comments, praise, critique?

A interesting note I'm saying here, if the rest of the world is this hilly, and mountainous, it's going to be difficult to win a conquest victory because it'll be hard to move around.

Second interesting note. I doubt I'm playing with a Celtic civ. If we want religion we can probably go for it.

2a. Shrine. If we for some reason are able to construct the Great Library before Shrine is finished, abandon all work on that and start work on the Great Library!
2b.Mining.
2c. None

Comments: If we abuse the citizen management system for hammers, we could rush the Great Library and then turn around and beeline for the Hanging Gardens.

We should be able to start the great library before a shrine is made. I need 7 more turns to finish the Monument, and 13 turns to finish writing.

I doubt it'll only take 6 to make the shrine.

So should I drop whatever building I'm working on to make the Great library?

Well, Lady Priscilla the fifth said, apparently our hunters found even more ruins.... I'm starting to wonder if this area was cursed, and that we shouldn't evacuate as soon as possible.

Our scouts managed to find another ruin.... It's good for our people in the immediate sense, but I can't help but feel we built over a metaphorical Indian burial ground. Lady Priscilla the fifth had no idea what I meant when I said that. Which was both hilarious and saddening at the same time. She did say, our city had leveled up again.

Lady Priscilla the seventh said we were at the corner of the world. We had mapped out the western end, and the northern end. She wanted the bowman to scout out to where the walls of our world met, and I agreed with her. She also mentioned that our people had finished with their monument. Warsaw was a peaceful neighbor. Lady Priscilla the eighth said that people were talking to start about the future. They seemed to be in three separate camps. 2 Research. Mining wasn't needed. So vote again, mining of course being an option. Depending on how the votes go, we will need two technologies.

Unfortunately, no can do. Moais require a coastal tile and in order to be considered coastal a tile needs to border a continous group of 10+ water tiles. Which doesn't happen on Small Lakes, ever (max lake size tends to be 6-7). So Moai are basically dead for this map.

2.Animal Husbandry, dry highlands tends to have lots of sheep and knowing where horses are would help us settle our cities better. Then Mining.
3.Liberty
6?. settle a city next to Uluru as our shrine-substitute. It's easier for a fledgling city to work than Kailash.

Hmmm... Thinking about positioning and the type of map, we could go for either a culture or military victory rather easily. After all, being in a corner surrounded by mountains helps with turtling up and it gives us rather good advantage as far as waging a war is concerned. Or it gives us the ability to sit back and develop culture while not worrying too much about enemies until late game (... when nukes and planes become a thing). I wrote back to Lady Priscilla the ninth, to figure out how to get ores and gemstones out of the earth. I mean besides just digging a giant hole.

Lady Priscilla the ninth came to me today. Said the novelty of writing wore out of the first time. It was a useful tool to be sure, just not one she wanted to use when unneeded.

Lady Priscilla the tenth said that while I was asleep people had prophetic dreams about heretics worshiping a heathen desert god. I told her that was no concern. That we would show them the light, when we met them. She looked confused, before I clarified, that the light was not of their god.

Lady Priscilla the eleventh said that while I was sleeping some hobo came up to the palace, and told everyone that our military might was okay, and we should feel okay. When Lady Priscilla the eleventh tried to have him detained, the hobo disappeared. People were wondering if it was some divine judgment.

Lady Priscilla the eleventh said people were growing restless again. Wondering what else they could do about their future. The liberty men, had grown to be the biggest group, but the group had grown divided. I told Lady Priscilla the eleventh I would think about who she should back.

Question 1. Should we re-order Derptastic to change focus, go back to general, or keep production focus.

Question 2. What should we research when we're done with Animal husbandry. If we pick Archery, we may get the top two choices.

Question 3 What policy do we pick?

Question 4. Now that I have enough for a worker. Should I buy one? Should I buy something else? Should I save my gold?

Also info question. If the ruin gives me a settler or Worker, will it stay in the same square as my warrior, or will it spawn in Derptastic.

Also, could you turn on the resource icons? It's hard to see what's available.

And if hypothetical Pantheon's have names, you can hypothetically name it also.

Lady Priscilla the thirteenth came by today and said my support of citizenship and lead to a creation of a work force that would improve the lands in our city. She continued that our people had finished the granary, and that they were looking for another project. I told her to focus on making a large building to hold books. She also said that we had found more ruins. I was less worried, as it had been a few days since our last encounter with ruins,

2 What do I research normally?

3 What do I build after the library is complete?

4 Should I switch focus, or stay on production?

Why would you waste GL for such a low level tech? I can't think of any reason to waste GL on an ancient tech. You always want to use it on a good classical tech. Get something like Constuction, or Philosophy that offer huge returns. Composite Bows or National College/Oracle are much better than anything found in the Wheel.

b. Sell some buildings in Derptastic. If so which ones.

c. Sell the horses for GPT.

Q 2 What policy should be pick.

Q 3 If we finish the liberty tree, which great person should we pick, and how should we use it?

b. Sell some buildings in Derptastic. If so which ones.

2. Finish HIM I mean liberty.

4. Market, if the oracle finishes.
5. Monument sounds good.
6. Hold the spending.
7. Keep it the same.

Wait, if we only just got currency, why have we even been valuing gold? Or paying people and being paid in it? Ah, well, just a snarky observation.

4 What should Aperture science build?
5 What should Derptastic and Aperture science focus on?

Bonus question.

Should I start making 5 turn updates? Or keep at 10 turn updates?
