haha, i saw that mentioned in the news tonight, apparently some people came to the mango at around 1am and used a crane to steal the mango

i don't know why, or how they've hidden it, but it's bloody hilarious

When my mum was at uni, she stole one of the teeth for a scavenger hunt :B Was reported in the papers an' everything.
(she took it back after a bit))

The simplest explanation is that they took it down themselves and claimed it was stolen to get media attention.

When staff showed up for work on Monday morning it was nowhere to be seen. They assumed the $90,000 sculpture was in for maintenance...
Well, that answers my pressing question as to how you could possibly have a ten-ton fruit.

Also, maybe they took to and gave it to a hungry bunny. (http://artisticthings.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/bunny4-533x400.jpg)

Well, it's not really surprising when you consider how Aussies came to be in Australia in the first place. :smalltongue:

Maybe someone read the wrong help-yourself-book: "How to lose 10 tons fast"?

Eh, it's not the most impressive thing I've ever heard. In Russia, they stole an entire church once. Brick by brick until it was all gone. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7728407.stm) Not that such things are uncommon; apparently, church theft (that is, stealing disused churches) is a serious problem for the Russian Orthodox Church. Of course, they also have a big issue with people stealing bridges. (http://metro.co.uk/2008/01/08/one-of-our-bridges-is-missing-368368/) Not some piddly 10 tonne bridges, of course. 200 tonne steel bridges, which they then sell as scrap metal.

It's like Carmen Sandiego is a real person. And occasionally steals beaches, for giggles. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beach_theft)

I hope they solve the mystery, because I am dying to know just how the thieves who took it are managing to hide it. :smalltongue:

I wouldn't mind a but o' snakebite for fun, my own self~

That's terrifying.

Why, the answer is simple! They didn't. See...

The simplest explanation is that they took it down themselves and claimed it was stolen to get media attention.

This! They moved it a dozen meters. Most folks just can't be arsed to look ten degrees to the left of the vacant mango stand.

My initial thought was that Moomin's episode where Moominmamma grows a huge as heck pumpkin and Stinky steals it. Hehehe.

Alas, was publicity stunt. (http://www.couriermail.com.au/travel/australia/big-mango-tourist-attraction-stolen-from-bowen-has-been-found/story-fnjjv0r9-1226835934289)

(I wonder if they'll use the opportunity to touch it up a bit...)

Well, that was a bit anti climactic. Nando's has good food though. Noms.

The mango does need a bit of fixing, yes.

Disappointing, but not too surprising. You don't exactly steal a ten ton sculpture for many other reasons, after all.

There's a story saying that a mini meth lab was found inside the mango, but it's only on one site and some of the specific points don't quite add up. It'd be a hell of a twist, though
