Hello everyone,

I'm in new D&D group and so far its going amazing. Everyone gets along famously and we just completed out first quest (we drove off a group of orcs and a manticore who had taken over an abbey).

Our characters works so well together that we've decided to form a company. My character has been charged with writing up a charter for our group. This has been fun so far and I haven't had much trouble with it.

I've also been put in charge of coming up with a name for our company. My party wants me to bring a few options to them and they'll pick what they like best.

I could probably think up some options on my own but the people on these forums always come up with fun ideas so I though I'd outsource the job to you.

For reference our party is:

Valeria, a human female Ranger. She a member of this world version of the pony express, the Green Riders. She's the one who organized us for our first job.

Siskin of Ishtar, A human Cleric of (surprise) Ishtar. A priest who it always there to heal those in need and club the hell out of anyone who doesn't.

Gregor, a human Fighter. A career soldier and a broadsword specialist. Completing a job is all that matters to the serious-minded warrior.

Crepe, a Halfling Illusionist. Short even by halfling standards, he learned to cast illusions of powerful warriors and dangerous monsters to compensate for his stature.

Cancer Ferrograd, a half-elf Bard/Fighter. My character. A soldier of fortune, he's willing to use any trick to get ahead. Often soft-spoken and subtle. Joined a foreign military at a young age to receive combat training and then feigned extreme incompetence to get discharged.

Kaya, an Elven Thief. Abandoned by her people in a human city at a young age, she avoids violence if she can help it. Her morality doesn't extend to personal property however, anything she can steal she considers rightfully hers.

Roland, a human Mage. Raised by a wealthy merchant family, he spent his entire inheritance on his education. He's used to being heard and will vociferously voice his opinion at any opportunity.

None of our characters have any shared history. We all met about a week ago (in game) as we were hired to oust these orcs. The land we're in is named but geography hasn't factored into our adventure terribly deeply.

Any ideas what our group should be called? All suggestions are welcome.

What is your company's shared history? Where are they based, do they have patrons or official support, what have they done together, what is their purpose, etc. ?

A simple solution would be to name it for either the place of its incorporation or the location of your headquarters. For example, if your group were incorporated in Larunor, you could be "The Larunor Mercenary Group." If you were headquartered in Waterdeep, you could be "The Waterdeep Adventuring Company." And so forth. [Location] [Activity] [Group Type] is an easy system to follow.

Another option is to name the group for its more famous achievements, such as "The Dragonslayers of Sharn" if you did as the name suggests at least once, or "The Holy Lights of Arcanix" if you've had to deal with undead, or perhaps "The Korth Lorekeepers" if you deal with more arcane problems. Again, [Location] [Achievement/Title] is an easy schematic.

If you prefer to be a bit witty or snarky about it, you could come up with the name more in-character. For example, "The Ferrograd Band" is a snarky way of reminding people to be careful who they put in charge of drafting documents. Alternatively, "Elf and a Half, and Friends," is just mean-spirited - and funny.

"The Ale Team" is right out. As is "The Fighting Mongooses."

I really like "Elf and a half, and Friends". We haven't got any clear goals as a group yet. I'm drafting a constitution because we needed a fair way to deal with treasure. Were sticking together after this job we were hired simply because we worked so well together.

"Cancer"? Really?

I like 'Universal Haulage' (motto: 'will nick anything, anywhere').

Or if you plan to specialise in exterminating humanoids, 'Ethnic Persil' (select popular detergent brand known to your players).

Other possibilities:

Surgical Bisection
Undiplomatic Immunity
Timely Removals
Private Dispatches
The Invisible Seven

- but really, it all depends on your play style and what image you want to convey. (1) implies ruthlessness, (2) arrogance, (3) efficiency, (4) discretion, (5) tactical mastery.

Perhaps he's crabby. Or he always comes through in a pinch. Likes long walks on the beach? Tough-shelled?

Yes it's kind of a strange name.

He's a half drow. His mother was a drow who thought of him as a tumor as he grew in her. She had just enough maternal instinct to dump him in a cosmopolitan city after his birth instead of just killing him. He's inherited a very manipulative nature from his drow ancestors but lacks their maliciousness (so far).

Instead of changing his name he tries to just own it.

I think you should honestly hold off on a name until you guys figure out what you are. If you all wind up being extreme patriots (performing many deeds for the crown is a good way to prove that point. hell you don't even have to like the king.) you could go with something like "knight errants of blank", or if you want something a bit more...epic, I guess, you can do something like "The Eternal Vanguard" or something slightly comedic if you can own it (I can't I have a terrible sense of humor)

You could also let your own deeds and the people of the land define you. I'm not going to get into it, but Every game I've DM'ed my players have hands down earned the name "Bad Company"

We probably should wait till we do more to choose a name but the party wants one now. Here are some that I came up with to stimulate discussion:

Carcinogenesis

The Se7en

The Cerulean Alliance

The Doppler Effect
"When we show up your problems disappear"

Lo Siete Amici

The Magnificient Seven

The Thieves of Heart

Heros Inc.

The Ferrograd Initiative

Solutions Incorporated

The Ferrous Alliance

High Places
"When you hire us, you'll always have friends in high places."

The Se7en

This one seems incredibly modern day, seeing as it's basically L33t speak. The other ones are pretty solid, and were it up to me, out of that list, I'd go with High Places, it's corny but it sticks, exactly what you want with a name.

The Se7en seems more modern than "Heroes Inc."? A corporation is practically the definition of modern, even more than 1337speak.

I personally like The Ferrograd Initiative. You'll have a constant calling back to your hometown even when you're big and famous and possibly exploring entire other planes of existence.

You could just go with something like "The Red Ravens" "If you do some early work underground "The Deep Wolves" You could all wear some kind of identifying mark like an arm band or a distinct hat and use that color/item as part of your name.

My group went with 'Thugs 4 Less' for our adventuring company, after a certain video game, if that gives you any ideas.

Pick whatever sounds like a good band name.

Manticork: Because you corked that Manticore.

The Tumors: Your character's name is Cancer, so all of the other members will have to adopt nicknames of various types of Cancer.

The Seven Veils: There are seven of you, including a priest of Ishtar. Choose this if (s)he converts the rest of you.

Seven Dwarfs/Dwarves: Racist, because none of you are Dwarfs. Check your privilege before going with this name.

will your company have a symbols or crest or sigel to sign contracts with something that can be recognized as your company. Say a manticore or some other imagery your company will carry.

Half up Front - because it'll save time in negotiations

Collateral Damage - they can't say they weren't warned

The League of Extraordinary Humanoids

Plausible Deniability - what your clients want anyway

Adventurers Anonymous - bonus points if you can get everybody to introduce themselves to NPCs with "my name is [blank] and I'm an adventurer."

The Ferrograd Brothers - only if you are prepared to insist that you are indeed brothers. No, it doesn't matter that some of you are clearly female.

Ninjas, Inc. - "Are any of you actually ninjas?" "Do you see any ninjas?" "No." "Exactly."
