hello, what would you say is the best D&D 3.5 character builder? I tried using hero lab but you need to pay per system which is stupid in my opinion. looking for a decent alternative (free I mean), any ideas are welcome

We use Heroforge. It's a free excel spreadsheet. It is mostly accurate, though we have noticed a goof once in a while.

I just discovered pcgen, it's a free download and streamlines everything you need for creating and managing characters.

This. ^ It's all I use. And it's great for a large variety of d20 games.

Of course, if you don't like the lack of prettiness, there's this. (http://charactersheets.minotaur.cc) I've been meaning to try it out, since it makes a very beautiful and easy-to-read character sheet. So you can take a crack at it and tell me what you think.

I second the vote for PCGen.

I use it extensively to model mostly core classes. Once you delve into the deeper waters of templates, classes and feats from the later books there is a lot of tweaking needing to be done. But for straight fighters, wizards, clerics, etc, it's great. I also appreciate how in the last version the books that are not part of Heroforge are listed.

Modified some of the older versions: wish they'd release an update to their mod book.

PCgen is awesome and very modular but does suffer from having a much less pretty interface than some other builders.

Also have some lag issues if I load a lot of books at once.
