View Full Version : Zinc Saucier XXII: Holy Cow!

dysprosium
2014-02-25, 10:00 AM
Welcome one and all to the twenty second Zinc Saucier challenge, where Playgrounders come to test their skill in the art of beautiful and bizarre (and bizarrely beautiful) builds, summoning a savory dish of superb swordplay and sublime sorcery.

The challenge? To come up with a build that has the same abilities and feel as the Secret Ingredient WITHOUT actually using it!

For the twenty second challenge, get ready to emulate a class with hardly any class features, from the Player's Handbook it's the Cleric

Our challengers will have about 2 weeks to build a complete build up to Effective Character Level 20 using a 32 point buy and all official WOTC D&D 3.5 materials (excluding dragon magazine, but including any WOTC online enhancements) with the abilities and feel of a Cleric without actually using any levels in it.

Entries must be submitted by Sunday, 11:59pm GMT, 9 March, 2014. As usual, please submit your entries via private message to the chairman, so as not to influence the other sauciers.

Judges will then have until Sunday, 11:59pm GMT, 23 March, 2014, to post scores for all dishes.

Contestants will be judged and awarded a score out of 5 in each of 4 categories;

* Innovation (Uniqueness in character concept, race, class, etc)
* Power (How powerful and versatile it is compared to the base class)
* Elegance (What can only be described as how well the build "flows", i.e not using lots of 1-2lv dips, sacrificing flavour for power or using flaws)
* Ingredient (How well the build captures the abilities and feel of the base class)

Presentation would be best in the style of how the iron chef does their presentations, however any style is allowed so long as it is clear on how the build was made.

Recommended style (at least until the code change):NAME OF ENTRY

For entries with spellcasting, use the following table for Spells per day and Spells Known. (Spells Known only if necessary, i.e. Sorcerer or Bard, but not Wizard or Warmage). For other systems (Psionics, ToB, Incarnum, etc.) keep track of PP/maneuvers/essentia separately, preferably in a nice neat list, similar to this:

Sauciers may submit as many builds as they want but please don't use leadership, as we don't want to overfeed the judges.

This competition is inspired by the Playground Iron Chef Competitions and uses mostly identical rules.

Also it comes with double prize money. Why? Because we care!

A few administrative notes:

Competitors will be free to use any official 3.5 rulebook in constructing their builds. Dragon magazine is disallowed, and Unearthed Arcana is allowed; but see Elegance below. Web-exclusive 3.0 or 3.5 materials by WotC are expressly allowed, but take care to verify that an updated version did not appear in print elsewhere, as this may cause an Elegance deduction at the judges' discretion. Alternate rule systems from UA such as gestalt are not allowed, as they create a different playing field. Also, item familiars are forbidden because I hate 'em.

Power level is up to you. Cheese is acceptable, but should be kept to a sane level unless you're showcasing a new TO build you've discovered. In the words of one of my predecessors, a little cheddar can be nice, but avoid the mature Gruyere unless you're making a cheese fondue.

Elegance could bear a little elaboration. It basically measures how skillfully you put your build together, and whether you sacrificed flavor for power. We're cooking here - if your dish doesn't taste good, it doesn't matter how well-presented it is. Use of flaws is an automatic loss of one point per flaw in this category. Other things that will cause lost points here are excessive multiclassing, and classes that don't fit the concept - using Cloistered Cleric in a front-line melee fighter, for example, may lose you points. Please note the following: a legal source's relative obscurity should not be considered as penalizing Elegance, excepting the aforementioned issues with Unearthed Arcana. Using too many sources may be an Elegance deduction at the judges' discretion, but a book's relative obscurity may not.

What's the minimum score in a category? Assuming an entry is legal, the minimum score in any category is 1. If a judge is convinced that an entry is illegal by the RAW, the judge may give a 0 or decline to score a given entry. Because this contest focuses on Player Characters, an entry that is not technically allowed for a PC, but is viable as an NPC, counts as a legal entry, but may receive a minimum score at the judges' discretion.

Is Dragon Compendium Allowed? Yes, but individual issues of Dragon Magazine are not.

What about 3.0 materials? 3.0 materials, whether online or in printed form, are allowed unless they've been officially updated to a 3.5 edition.

Are Dragonlance, Ravenloft, Planescape, Dark Sun, or Kingdoms of Kalamar allowable sources? The Dragonlance Campaign Setting is allowed, but the subsequent books for Dragonlance are considered 3rd party, and are therefore not eligible, despite the "WotC approved" status of those books. The same holds for Oriental Adventures (1st party) and the subsequent Rokugan books (3rd party). Materials from Ravenloft, Planescape, Dark Sun, and Kingdoms of Kalamar are considered 3rd party for purposes of this contest, and are therefore not allowed.

What about online sources in general? If the online source is a) published by WotC, and b) not replaced by an updated version at a later time, it is eligible. Use it, link it.

Where's the line drawn with "acceptable/unacceptable" for Unearthed Arcana? This will likely vary a bit from Chairman to Chairman. Variant class features and variant character classes are espressly permitted. Item Familiars and Gestalt have always been verboten, since before IC migrated to GitP; don't expect that to change. Flaws have similarly always been noted as warranting a deduction; while I am Chairman, I'm extending that to Traits, though they warrant 1/2 the penalty in Elegance that a Flaw would because they're roughly 1/2 as useful. Alternate spell systems, alternate skill systems and alternate crafting rules all create an uneven playing field, and as such, will be disallowed for as long as I am Chairman. Bloodlines are ripe for abuse, and will be discouraged as long as I am Chairman. Note that judges are allowed to look askance at any use of Unearthed Arcana not specifically mentioned above, at their discretion, and otherwise penalize Elegance according to their preference.

What, exactly, does the ban on Leadership mean? As folks have started to try to work around the edges of this one, I'm forced to spell it out more plainly. No Leadership, Draconic Cohort, or Feats that grant a similar ability are allowed EXCEPT Wild Cohort while I am chairman. Any PrC you choose with Leadership or a Leadership-analog has that ability entirely ignored for this contest, as it may neither be used nor traded away via any means whatsoever.

How the heck do I even do this? Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to select a combination of race, templates, classes, alternate class features, prestige classes, skills, and feats, meld them into a single character that progresses from ECL 1 to ECL 20, that is as close as possible to the secret ingredient as possible in look, feel, class features. How you do it is up to you, I recommend you read previous competitions if you are interested in seeing how others have done it before you. Capture the essence!

In a word: Yes.

I was going to mirror the Iron Chef ingredient Osteomancer but considered against it for this round instead going with a core base class.

I think this is an easy and difficult ingredient at the same time and am curious to see what everyone can do!

I was sorta hoping Artificer would be the next T1 we did, but ah well. I've got a couple good ideas for this one. I'm judging IC this round, but I'll be on Spring Break next week, so I'll take a crack at submitting both of them.

also have a very good idea for how i'll do a 'cleric' without cleric ... trying to find a fancy way of tweaking it for fun and profit.

After reading the full thread about the changes to be made, I will worry about how it can be done on a grander scale after the changes go live.

As it is now, I believe I should be able to edit the post entries myself for the Rounds that I have been Chairman for.

What do you mean?

Vaz
2014-02-25, 06:57 PM
I think he means that some classes have access to set/defined/limited domains, others have access to all.

That is the problem of the chef to discover; whether the originality/elegance/power of the build is lost/gained over particular classes.

As a guide, don't build what the judges want (outside of trying to check the boxes) but what you want it to. It's a hobby, not a job.

If I was judging (and I might), I'd probably go by 'do they have access to domains at all'.Or could they emulate the abilities domain's grant? That was more of my question: Should I look for people getting domains or getting the effects of domains? (Of course for the effects it would probably need to be a lot of domain abilities to emulate the variety Clerics have.)

Edit: sorry for the question, I'm new to this judging business.

I think different judges are going to look at in their own way. If you feel that the entry needs a domain to be more cleric-y than just getting a similar effect, that is your decision as a judge.

Vaz
2014-03-05, 06:39 AM
Yes, but most judges assume that standard adventuring kit and obvious items are included (like Stat ups etc). If you have need of a particular item, such as a particular weapon with certain upgrades to enhance your build then it might be worth making note of it.

On the other hand, if your build requires a certain item to even function, then that is almost universally an elegance penalty (i.e require a particular Charisma score which you cannot achieve within the point buy, so can only be selected if you have a Cloak of Charisma etc would hurt you).

If you make use of certain items to get special effects (i.e, you're a Necromancer, and don't have access to Desecrate, then it's fairly obvious you want to get a Wand of Desecrate to account for improving your Undead; of course, you then need to get yourself some decent scores in UMD to ensure you can use it) then make a note of the synergies between the items.

In short, your build should function without items, (which are the topping to the cake to use an Iron Chef analogy) to attempt to get full points. However if you feel like your build is worth dropping a few elegance points for more power/originality/ingredient scores that would be gained through an item, then feel free to do so. It's your build, after all. Not the judges.

Background

Background
The would be cleric of Helm, as youngster Zoey never gave much though of daily court life, she wanted to be out in the world doing good where it could really matter and help folks. Zoey took it upon herself to gain some training with a druidic order but after a short time decided this was not for her. so she set out once more into the lands where she found what she was looking for in the spiritualistic rituals of a shaman. the older shaman allowed Zoey to study and train in the shaman arts as she seemed to have something of a natural talent. after some a few years of study her mentor told her she should look into becomeing one of a few divine oracles he guided her to the large southern city where the temples of the divine oracle order were located and with his blessing they allowed her to begin to study and train within their walls, where she spent little time as she was frequently out trying to help others.

Vardeg was a shaman's son amongst the Ghaash'kala. He trained in the ancient art, being talented in it more than most. His family was proud of his talent, and wanted him to travel the world and learn. Vardeg's first destination was Thrane. He wanted to see this Silver Flame that the missionaries spoke of, and while the devotion of the priests impress him, he didn't feel that spark.
You're a shaman, send your pet to fight for you, turn undead, kill things.
After his stay in Thrane, he traveled to Sharn, to see what the Sovereign Host had to offer. There he met two good friends of his, Kimar Audu, Human Paladin 9 of the Sovereign Host, and Brima Tamos, Human Wizard 11 of the Sovereign Host. They traveled on a few quests together, but went their separate ways when the high priest of the Temple of Sharn sent him to another temple, in Aundair.
Sovereign Speaker! DOMAINS, BABY! By this point, you're using the domains to turn yourself into a Druid-Cleric abomination. Focus on SPELLS. ALL THE SPELLS.
Arriving in Aundair, Vardeg was greeted with welcoming arms, helping protect the innocent of Aundair from the depredations of its scum. He made friends with Slaughter, a Warforged Warblade 10. Slaughter helped him clean up the slums and make the city a little nicer, if only for a few days.
MORE DOMAINS! SPONTANEOUS SUMMONING! But wait, there's more! You're a level away from your third iterative! Focus on your spells.
Vardeg, however, felt something. A sort of homesickness combined with nausea. He traveled back, Slaughter at his side, and picked up Brima and Kimar. They returned to his tribe in the Demon Wastes, to see them dying of plague. The four of them treated his tribe and took up their job of protecting the world from what lies within the Demon Wastes.
More levels of Shaman. You get Travel Devotion, and Travel Domain. Both useful. You call animals to your side, you don't need to prepare domain spells, you have twelve domains, go nuts-erer.
Early on, you'll want a crossbow. Eventually, spring for either a Belt of Magnificence +6 or a Cloak of Charisma and Periapt of Wisdom +6. Both are helpful, but the second's cheaper. If you go for the second, get a Belt of Battle. If you go for the first, grab an Amulet of Natural Armor. Grab Dream Hide, and ramp the bonus up high for armor. BUY DOMAIN DRAUGHTS! ALL THE DOMAIN DRAUGHTS! And a Nightstick, you'll typically have a low Charisma (but a positive modifier), so extra turn attempts are always, always useful. Shirt, grab an Iron Heart Vest with Iron Heart Surge, and see if your DM will let you blend it with an Ephod of Authority. +1 Turning and once per encounter IHS.

Items:

So long as he's got a sword handy, Jory can deal with his gishy healer role. He usually wears armour, and at ninth level he'll grab up a suit of mithral full plate, in which he can cast normally, and a greatsword. Before that, he'll just wear a chain shirt and jump to the front with his longsword, held two-handed due to his inability to cast properly with shields. Jory likes items which move his charisma up, but would probably also feel at home with a Sun Disk of Pelor, obtainable by second level, to boost his healing ability.

What's What: The cleric was really designed as a gish, hence his ability to wear heavy armour and medium BaB, and which is also why classes such as the Duskblade had to wait until PHBII for their release. Jory replicates this through Paladin of Freedom and Eldritch Knight to create a combat-capable character, and Bard to heal while keeping his BaB above ground.

While Jory does not directly mimic the Cleric's sole class feature, his massive repertoire of healing spells is enough to rain severely upon the parades of nearby undead. Clerics often take the Healing and War domains, which are replicated with the inclusion of every Cure Wounds spell at the Bard's disposal (along with Remove Fear, Remove Curse and Neutralise Poison) and the combat prowess of the Eldritch Knight.

The Paladin of Freedom, as well as providing the martial weapon proficiencies that the Eldritch Knight requires, adds to Jory's survivability by increasing his saves, providing his Lay On Hands ability to heal slightly, and indeed increasing his hit points by 4 in the first place. Clerics are almost always considered to be one of the toughest customers about, which is also the rationale behind most of the feat choices.

Fluff-wise, I imagine Jory chanting some religious song with great gusto, inspiring his allies to... well, get a +2 on attack and damage rolls or skill checks, but we can pretend that they're performing whatever deeds they might be doing with a suitable level of heroism, inspired by the great leader in their ranks. For what is a cleric if not a religious leader?

Note that Spell Compendium highly suggests looking through Cleric and Druid spelllists to add spells to the Shaman class, and that Domains from the same book is to be considered as well

Ssharra morphed her tail into her more human-like legs, as she got within sight of the city. She knew all to well that Nagas had a bad reputation the further from the homelands she came, specially due to the Yuan-Ti which at least superficially similar in appearence.

She had wandered for ages now, not even sure how long it had been since she heard the ancestors telling her to go to a tower to the west, in Faerϋn to find a Naga artifact, which she had discovered had been stolen in a ancient Naga Temple in the swamplands near her homelands, that she had visited in a quest for gaining visions from the ancestors. Still, while traveling there she had learned many things about the world, and specially what they believed, even starting to pray to Kelemvor for protection for the spirits of the ancestors.

Yet ... She felt like she got no closer to the artifact, when ever she got somewhere she found that it had been moved to somewhere else, and most recently the tracks had started leading back east to the barbarian hordes to the North

At this point Ssharra is a fairly regular Shaman, using Travel Devotion (and extra Turnings) to get into close combat and from there beat up her opponents, Hero Domain gives some of the lacking combat spells that Cleric otherwise would get, in the form of Divine Favor and Bull Strength.

How it starts to get more fun, 4th level divine spells are online and with that comes Divine Power from Hero Domain.

Furthermore she've gained much more defensive abilities, such as Spirits Favor (Divine Grace in all but name), maneuvers to replace her horrendous Fort/Relfex saves, 'displacement' from Child of Shadow together with Travel Devotion, more AC (+Wis) and Evasion.

Offensively there have also been a couple of things to help, most prominently Superior Unarmed Strike and Disipline 'Weapon' Focus, and even mroe spells. Furthermore Crushing Weight of the Mountain while prehaps suboptimal, is a very thematic ability for a Naga, gaining Constrict when grappling

Presistent Spelled Divine Power with Divine Metamagic is a classical Cleric Cheese, which are very viable for this character as well. of other goodies Ssharra gains Uncanny Dodge (even more defensive capability), better saves against divine spells, limited ability to imbue my Animal Companion with small spells. Otherwise its mainly more of the same

Even more of the same really ... merely rounding the build out nicely

She thinks she's a better cleric than you are.

St. Celeste the Contemplative

Excerpt from history book:
Although she was never formally anointed as a priest of her faith, Celeste's devotion and knowledge served the church for many years, safeguarding the minds and bodies of the faithful from possession and temptation.
A great philosopher and thinker, Celeste wrote many texts now considered vital for church doctrine.
For her invalueable contributions to the faith during her long life, she was, following her ascension, sainted.

And that is it for this round!

Five builds from five different sauciers!

I leave it for the judges now.

Very interesting builds here. I will get to judging immediately.

Well, my concept was fairly diffrent from these ones, that's for sure. I don't know if it'd be as good, though. I really hope I'll be able to participate next time...

I was going to compete but ... not with a tier 1 full caster. I toyed with the idea for a bit and came up with a concept.

Shaman (wow this was popular)
Elf or Half-Elf
Lawful Neutral
Worships: Heironesous

Taking at least one level in each of the following prestige classes:
Ordained Champion
Contemplative
Divine Oracle
Church Inquisitor
Seeker of the Misty Isle
War-Priest

I didn't quite get around to it...

I am surprised at the lack of Rainbow Servant...:smallconfused:

I spy an exact copy of my build that I was due to enter, near enough. Unfortunately, I feel this will bias my judging, and do not think I can objectively judge. I wish the best of luck to all participants, good to see this getting back on the road again.

Thanks Vaz! I hope that we can keep the momentum going too.

I agree that we have a nice crop of entries too.

When (or has) the new round take(n) place? I think I may give the next one a go!

This current round is in its judging phase and the judges have until Sunday, 11:59pm GMT, 23 March, 2014, to post scores for all dishes.

The next round (Round XXIII) will start soon after the judging is over and a winner is declared. That round's secret ingredient has not been chosen yet.

But I'm thinking about it. :smallcool:

How are the judges progressing with this round's delicacies?

What would be everyone's "dream ingredients?"

As for ingredient...

Maybe Totemist or some other Incarnum class?

It seems that the suggestions lean towards base classes rather than prestige classes.

And here I thought a prestige class should be next since we did a base class this time around.

I still have time to figure that out though. Muah Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!

How goes our judge(s)? Wonders if I'll need to get the judging hat out . . .

Sian
2014-03-17, 01:30 PM
a fair few of the prestige classes aren't really all that unique when it comes to it, so that might be part of the reasoning

Thanks for the heads up Jormengand! Just read about the forum update.

If the judges get to post scores before the shutdown more power to them (and us)!.

Should there be no judgings before the update (or immediately after the return), I will judge the entries, declare a winner, and get the set up for the next ingredient.

And are my scores. I'm still new to this so feel free to offer constructive criticism and respectfully judge my judging.

Zoey the Shaman of Helm

Innovation (3.0) Druid and Shaman were both base classes I would expect. Divine Oracle was not the first PrC I would have thought of (that goes to Contemplative) but it isn't extremely innovative. A number of the feats , your race and the Phynxkin ACF were not expected.

Power (4.0) Your spells per day is nothing to scoff at, and you have a pair of animal companions to boot. Not much else there however.

Elegance (1.5) You dipped 1 level of Druid and you don't qualify for Arcane Disciple as you don't cast Arcane spells. Some of the other feats felt a little disconnected from the build (Dodg, Skill Focus and Extraordinary Spell Aim).

Ingredient (4.5) Spellcasting: Yes
Turn/Rebuke Undead: Yes
Domain Access: Yes
Can cast in Armor: Yes, though only light

Total (13.0) This build is certainly a solid entry. It hits all of the major points for emulating Cleric and while it does use 2 base classes that I expected the rest of the build was not what I was expecting. However, this build lacks something in elegance. It has a dip, lots of feats that don't synergize well and a problem with qualification. Overall though, quite nice.

Vardeg Kimatu

Innovation (3.0) Shaman was certainly expected and none of your feats were too innovative. However Sovereign Speak was not a PrC I expected. I haven't even heard of the book Faiths of Eberon before.

Power (5.0) You don't have full casting but you have enough options from your numerous domains to make up for it.

Elegance (4.0) Only two classes were used, and there were no dips. Some of the feats didn't synergize very well but the Shaman bonus feat list is really weird.

Ingredient (4.5) Spellcasting: Yes
Turn/Rebuke Undead: Yes
Domain Access: Yes, you even greatly exceeded the normal number of domains a Cleric would get.
Can cast in Armor: Yes, though only light

Total (16.5) You have quite the build here. It is quite elegant, very powerful and uses an obscure and interesting PrC. Only thing I would say is that Shaman is a very obvious choice.

St. Jory, the Hospitaller

Innovation (4.5) I can safely say I did not expect Eldritch Knight, an arcane gish PrC. Paladin was not out of my mind but you only used 2 levels of it.

Power (2.5) 6th level spells and 18 BAB by 20th level is very good compared to a Fighter, but it is certainly not as good as a 20th level Cleric.

Elegance (4.0) Everything is from the SRD except Battle Caster and Lesser Aasimar which is certainly worth points. The two levels of Paladin is a little dip'y but not bad and none of your feats really felt like they were part of the build. Still, overall the build is very elegant. I'm also not going to penalize you for using a Paladin variant because I hate the "Paladin's must by Lawful Good" rule.

Ingredient (2.5) Spellcasting: Yes, though not to the extent of a Cleric
Turn/Rebuke Undead: No
Domain Access: No
Can cast in Armor: Yes.

Total (13.5) Your build was certainly very elegant but I felt that it lacked something in terms of power and emulating Cleric. Few of your feat seemed to be part of the build if you know what I mean. They didn't give your character anything that specifically help which I feel is where you lost some elegance and potentially power. However, I really do love your use of an Arcane Gish to emulate Cleric.

Ssharra

Innovation (4.0) Shaman and Contemplative were both things I expected. However, Swordsage, being a Naga and Divine Disciple were not options I foresaw.

Power (4.0) You only barely managed to reach 9th level casting but you have a number of other class features.

Elegance (3.5) I'm going to have to hit you here. The build jumped around and had a 1 level and a 2 level dip.

Ingredient (4.5) Spellcasting: Yes, but not quite as good as a 20th level Cleric.
Turn/Rebuke Undead: Yes
Domain Access: Yes
Can cast in Armor: Yes, only light but you do get Wis to AC

Total (16.0) This build is rather interesting but it it's quite as powerful as a Cleric. It also has two dips and is doesn't flow very well in my opinion.

St. Celeste, the Contemplative

Innovation (1.0) I definitely expected Archivist, Sacred Exorcist and Contemplative so I can't give you many points. Catalouges of Enlightenment is a nice way to pick up a domain ability however.

Power (5.0) You have 20th level Archivist casting and Divine Metamagic. Enough said.

Elegance (3.5) The build is very simple and elegant with only a 2 level dip to argue otherwise.

Ingredient (5.0) Spellcasting: Yes
Turn/Rebuke Undead: Yes
Domain Access: Yes
Can cast in Armor: Yes

Total (14.5) To be frank, this isn't a very innovative build. Sacred Exorcist is one of the first things that comes to mind when you're trying to get Turning on a non-Cleric and the same goes for Contemplative and domains. Still, I can't argue with this build being powerful and emulating Cleric.

Coming back wouldn't be complete without a dispute:

While i accept (and argee) that Swordsage is quite dippy (but wanted something to shore up the mediocore armor), I'm not argeeing with calling taking a 4 levels of Divine Oracle (interspersed with the aforemented two Swordsage levels) a 1 level dip ... Not argeeing (certainly not enough to ammount to the 'damage' to elegance) with calling the build very jumpy, as Divine Disicple is only a 5th level prestige and the other prestige classes are taken in a line one at a time.

Humble Master
2014-04-01, 05:34 PM
Coming back wouldn't be complete without a dispute:I reviewed the build and my score and have decided that such a low score in elegance is inappropriate. I am officially raising my Elegance score for Ssharra to 3.5 thus brining up the total to 16.

Thanks for responding Humble Master. Would it be possible for you to edit your judging post to show the score update? It would help with record keeping.

And one more dispute for you:

Didn't know we were allowed to dispute with the judges. :smalltongue:

Since we apparently are, I should dispute the fact that the checklist HM used for the Ingredient was in fact copied directly from Sshara's entry, which was of course optimised to give Sshara as high a score as possible, and ended up penalising Jory because he tried to find innovative ways of emulating domain abilities, turn undead etc. without going down the obvious path of searching fifty sourcebooks for another divine class with turn undead and domains and sticking that down.

Once this has been resolved, the winners will be named and then we can start the next round!

And one more dispute for you:

Once this has been resolved, the winners will be named and then we can start the next round! My template for scoring the Cleric has nothing to do the Sshara build. I decided that my criteria was that the class get the ability to turn undead and gain access to domains (or gain a significant number of specific domains).
