I find myself missing the feel of some older rpgs such as Lufia 2, Chrono Trigger, and such. What I've seen advertised on Steam recently just didn't feel up to snuff. Anyone have some suggestions for newer yet comparable titles? Arc Raiser would be another. PC platform, steam preferred. Thanks in advance!

Tough choice. jRPG is a genre that has extremely small presence on the PC, especially in terms of quality titles.

You could give Barkley: Shut Up And Jam Gaiden a try. It's a parody game, but it's also very fun to play. And it's completely free.

If you want to look at some older RPGs, you might give GoG (http://www.gog.com/) a try. No old jRPGs that I know of, but there are a lot of early wRPGs like Ultima, Wizardry, and Might and Magic to play.

There's Breath of Death VII (VIII?) and Cthulu Saves the world on Steam. As a more adventure game but with 16 bit style graphics and worth every penny, there is To the Moon. If you haven't played it yet go do so, now would be good, I'll wait. :smalltongue: Other than that I've got notthing for SNES style RPGs on Steam. Could give you a nice list of worthwhile indie games if you want though.

On the Rain Slick Precipice of Darkness is pretty fun.

Try Geneforge. You can start with one of the newer ones, but all of them are on PC, all of them work with modern machines, and they all hold up pretty well, even if the graphics prior to Geneforge III are a bit iffy.

Being about to finish Geneforge 5, I heartily second this one. I think you can get the series in a bundle, too.

Septerra Core is a JRPG avaiable at Gog.com, but that one feels more like a Playstation 1 era game rather than SNES.

Besides that, I don't have anything that hasn't already been mentioned by other posters.

You may want to try out the Vacant Sky (http://www.projectbc.net/vacantsky/) Series (http://rpgmaker.net/games/1046/) out, it is made on RPG maker, but is pretty amazing. The first link contains only the enhanced version containing 2 of 3 acts, and second link(under 'series (http://rpgmaker.net/games/1046/)'), contains the original 3 chapters, and the remade 2 ones. It's free too. You can also pre-order Vacant Sky Awakening (http://projectbc.itch.io/vacant-sky-awakening), another part of the series, and it usus now a non-RPG maker engine. There also many other amzing games made with the RPG Maker for PC, but that's a long list, and I advise search them out yourself.

Square also released the Final Fantasy VII and VIII, on Steam, and there is also Final Fantasy VII - UltraHD Fan Made Remake Mod (http://www.moddb.com/mods/final-fantasy-vii-ultrahd-fan-made-remake) which gives improved movies graphics, and retranslates the game. Check out also this site (http://ff7remake-pc.yolasite.com/) for info about it. It installs the best with the fanmade 'Final Fantasy VII Ultima Edition', but if you own already any version of FFVII, you can more or less download it legally too.

Ya know, I started that one and for whatever reason had some issue with that gargoyle head in the second world. Well, whatever world. It's been a while.

You could grab Phantasy Star IV (http://store.steampowered.com/app/211205/) from Steam. While it's even better if you've played 1 and 2 (3 is irrelevant) it's still super good even without that.

It helps knowing that Draxx counts as an undead.

Last Remnant is a pretty good JRPG on PC. Though, understand I say that as someone who got turned off of JRPGs after Suikoden and FFT. I loved those, but didn't really play the genre much after those games came out. I tried staying "up to date" with Final Fantasy, but I played all of 60 minutes of both X and XIII.

Other old school RPGs in the western vein include Spiderweb's games, like the Avernum series, the Avadon series, and Geneforge.

Don't forget Nethergate and the Avadon series! :smallwink:

The Last Remnant is very good, even if the large-monster mechanics might make you swear a bit.

Also, I think the only modern games that are close to Actraiser, are Black & White and it's sequel. In them you also control a god , manage your worshippers, and fight, even if in the battle participates your pet giant beast, rather than you as a deity.

As for RPGs, you should maybe try out Loren The Amazon Princess (http://www.winterwolves.com/lorenamazonprincess.htm), the game drew some comparision to Radical Dreamers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radical_Dreamers:_Nusumenai_H%C5%8Dseki), a unreleased in west sequel to Chrono Trigger, as both are combinations of Visual Novels and RPGs. It's story also has multiple branches like Chrono Trigger, and it has turn based combat with a front and back row. It is a very good game, too.
