I am new to the forum and I have found some great links and comments re: character building but I do not have all of the books and I am interested in some of the specifics regarding Templates. Is there a link that gives more than just a cursory overview of what the templates provide?

Well, sadly templates are far too varied to be done any sort of justice by a "cursory" overview. But the basic gist is that (most) templates give you new abilities in exchange for level adjustment(LA), which means you level up a lot slower. The best templates, imo, are LA0, which means they have no LA, but there's usually some other negative in the template itself (e.g. Dragonborn, which gives up your racial features in exchange for Wings or other options).
