View Full Version : Magic Items that Require Magic to Use

The thought here occurred to me while reading a d20 system with spell points, er, anima points as a general rule, with all characters, including non-casters, gaining them at the rate of 5 + Cha bonus per level. Unfortunately, the game didn't provide any use of them whatsoever to characters that didn't/couldn't cast spells.

So what if gaining any benefit from magic items required the expenditure of one's own personal magic power? A Wizard must expend his magic power to cast spells, but a Fighter also gains magic power which he has no inherent class features to spend on. In theory, the Fighter, then, would be able to use more magic items, more efficiently than the Wizard (unless the Wizard forgoes casting spells).

Thoughts on the subject?

This is, I think, an extremely effective idea for balance. It removes the "free lunch" effect of permanent magic items and native spellcasting, and brings choices down to opportunity cost.

All this is why it's a crucial part of a system I'm working on. :smallamused:
