Wizard spell combo for better protection

I heard someone mention something about combining fire, water and such spells for defense that give you protection to a bunch of things. Anyone heard of this? By chance can explain what works?

Maybe the heart of (element) spells in complete mage. They're good hour/level defensive spells and if you have all 4 active at once you also get immunity to crits and sneak attack on top of the other defenses.

That sounds like it thanks. My secondary character is a wizard and he just jumped from level 9 to 11 so need to boost spells
