Just noticed that Hel is not in the air ship ... nice subtle end to the book.

I'm reasonably certain she wouldn't FIT in the airship. At least, not without assuming a smaller form.

Well the gods so far have been anywhere between planet-sized (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0275.html) to about three times the size of a humanoid (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0874.html). They could probably become smaller if they wished.

3 times the size of a dwarf humanoid, so a little smaller than 3 times a human even. A god could fit on the ship.
Edit: Looking at it, you see dwarves about 1/10th the height.

I wasn't quite sure whether that a was a dwarf or some other worshiper of the Northern gods. I wasn't quite sure what the height ratio was either. Either way, if the gods stay at the height, they are either just barely able to fit or a too large. However, since they can change their size, they can probably make themselves smaller.

It never even remotely looked to me like she's on the ship. Why would she hold court with her throne and her giants and everything in the musky hold of a thief's ship?

Yeah, that was my thought on reading the OP--why would she be on the airship anyway?

Taking a brief glimpse at the image could make it look that way, but having Durkon talk to her from the air ship is a nice book ending.

There's no frame of reference for distance between the gods and the planet, so no real comparison can be made in that strip. yeahimwronghere

The joke is that if she were on the airship, she's be a Dea on the Mechane. It's an extended Deux Ex Machina pun.

I think that joke would of got more clarity (and by proxy laughter) if it was Deva ex Mechane.

Sadly, she is not on the Mechane, though the ex coule make it Dea not on Mechane.

The D&D world is not my area of expertise, so I'm just asking...

Are gods even able to manifest themselves on the mortal plane?

Well, there are some gods (Fharlaghn, Vecna, I think Iuz) who actually live on the mortal plane. They're weaker there, because it isn't divinely morphic.

Through their avatars, yes. They're much weaker than their true form but there can be more than one avatar if a deity in question is powerful enough.

Does this thread qualify as one of those joke threads Rich warned us about?

Not really, I think. I believe it is more of just discussing what happened in a specific part of a specific comic. As previously stated, nice subtle end to the book. It might be talking about a joke, but it is not necessarily a joke thread. (correct me if I'm wrong.)
Also, the giants really wouldn't make sense on the ship. WHY WOULD SHE HAVE GIANTS ON THE SHIP?
