View Full Version : Monster suggestion

I'd like to request your help in looking for some monsters for my campaign. It'll be an undead campaign, but the (already overused ) twist is that the lower ranked undead may be mindless beasts, but the higher ones are sentient and highly organized.

I was thinking about a structure somewhat like this, from bottom to top in ranks:
-Mindless undead footsoldiers
-Sentient "officers" that have a limited capacity to raise the undead
-The BBEG, pretty much the avatar of the Death deity. He has impressive high level magic, the capacity to kill most things with a single spell and the potential to raise a very large undead army

I considered that zombies, skeletons and swordwraiths would be sufficient to create footsoldiers of various types (depending on their martial skill in life, how intact their corpses are etc.), but what I'd like to know from you is what types of undead you'd suggest for the officers and the BBEG.

Please keep in mind that this is an E6 game. The officers should therefore be within that range, but I don't mind the BBEG being unbeatable (CR 8-10 or perhaps even a little bit higher than 10). Furthermore, while I prefer to limit myself to core and the completes, I'm open to pretty much every official WotC source (except dragon magazine/compendium).

Thanks in advance for the help.

Various humanoids with the Zombie or Skeleton template applied (With giants for the mega-mooks).
Vampires, Bodaks, etc., ideally with Wizard (Necromancer specialty), Cleric, or Dread Necromancer levels
Hrm... Perhaps an Atropal? (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Atropal) Atropal is waaaaaaaaay too powerful, but perhaps you could scale its abilities down? Or use a Lich?

The Atropal is an Epic monster, but there is a weaker version (the Atropal Scion). I believe it can be found in Libris Mortis.

Dragon Compendium has Goulish Creatures, that could help.
Also, for Mindlesz, it has the Ravenous Template, works good on Zombie Halflings.

BBEG, could go simple and Spellstitched Necropolitian Cleric. The Spellstitching would work well, I think, since its Wis based, and can give it just a bit of extra Oomph, since that single 6th lvl Slot is rather formidable in an e6.
Too bad Blaspemy is a 7th, since it would be brutal, but not high enough CL to make it overkill.
You could fill the lower slots with the Summon Undead line.

just an idea.

Bone and Corpse creatures are both nice as they retain their mental ability, but I am not sure if an LA was ever set out for them. Necropolitan(spelling?) would be the easiest to fit in an E6 and I would definitely suggest spell-stitched.

Mohrgs create spawn when they kill humanoids -- they raise as zombies under the Mohrg's control. They would probably be decent officers.

One of my bookmarks (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=156274) could be useful to you. Open the spoiler to find a list of undead, with HD, CR, notes of abilities and what book you can find the creature in.
