Hey, I'm fairly new to D&D, only really having played on and off with my cousin out of state through email, texting, online, and the like. After reading a lot of the 3.5 books, core and not, as well as reading these forums for quite a while, I've finally found my home in some of the non-magic classes, but I want to learn how to play the more magic oriented classes, and round my skill set so that I might be a better DM when I start my own campaigns.

I'm not going for complete optimization in any class or otherwise, preferring role play to the former, but am no stranger to optimization either.

The general character creations rules we go by are;

-start at lv.5, 10, or 15
-LA buyout once per three levels.
-If a rare crossbreed (like Bastards and Bloodlines), you have to explain how it happened relative to the campaign setting and/or continuing story.
-roll 4 dice, pick three highest/ point buy (I always roll)
So far, I have two characters that I have built that fix my playstyle

My first character
Lv.10 Phrenic human rogue

10 str, 12 con, wis 16, dex 18, int 16, cha 20

He has dodge, exotic weapon-whip (for Indiana Jones esque skill trick), quick draw, rapid reload, and weapon finesse for his feats, as well as Improved evasion for his rogue special ability.

skills: Balance 13, bluff 13, climb 10, diplomacy 13, disable device 13, escape artist 13, hide 3, jump 10, move silently 13, open lock 13, search 13, sleight of hand 13, use magic device 13, use rope 3

The idea was to have a spy type character that had a way with words, and if things went sour, he'd jet out real fast. Personally my favorite character since I put a lot of thought into him, even though he is probably a mess of a character.

--Second character

Lv.9 <humanoid shapechanger homebrew, LA +4, granted shifting as Shifter as well as +2 str and +4 con, and some other abilities I'll list below>

Barbarian 8, Bear warrior 1
str 20, con 22, wis 15, dex 15, int 14, cha 16

Feats; Power attack, Endurance, Extra rage, Cleave

Skills: Climb 12, intimidate 12, jump 11, listen 12, ride 2, survival 12, swim 11

Racial features

Shift(su): As razorclaw shifter, +2 str when shifted; able to take shifter feats

+4 on swim checks, lowlight vision, hold breath 5 mins.x constitution

At any rate, I would like advice on how to streamline characters, as well as how to create/maintain a proper spell caster, arcane or otherwise. I tried Paladin once, but the code set me off because of how much it could be pressed without the Grey Guard prestige or the Shadowbane Inquisitor. If you aren't into spellcasting classes, other class recommendations are welcome.

Again, personally, I favor melee classes. I do however, recognize the insane power of the druid class, and I love wildshape. Master of Many Forms/Warshaper, anyone?

builds I still want to create;

A mounted character (Always fun; maybe mounted on a rhino or a dinosaur- becuase a T-rex or Triceratops would be freaking awesome)

General Wizard/sorceror/ etc.

A summoner-type build

Lone soldier/mercenary (Mostly role play fueled, but Fighter doesn't cut it, and I admit I'm not a huge fan of the combat forms of the Ranger. Warblade is pretty awesome, though.)

Berserker; I love barbarians, and I want to figure out a build that doesn't involve frenzied berserker or Bear Warrior. Alternate races for flavor and power recommended.

Psionics: I have the same issue with this class as I do with the spellcasting classes.

Thank you for your help! And I look forward to meeting you all here!(I just registered today)

First off, I'm a bit confused on what kind of caster you want. Druids are nice and simple, as the jack of all trades, but wizards and clerics get more complex, but of course, this is all relative. Casters are always going to be more complex than non-casters. Here are some general caster rules.

1. Never give up caster levels if you PrC
2. Blasting seems really good, and may be good at early levels, but using spells, like color spray (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/colorSpray.htm) that take completely take someone out of a fight are better.
3. Buffs are good.
4. And always remember, if you play with other people, a T1 caster can, and probably will outshine everyone else. Take it how you will.

I'll keep those rules in mind, thanks. I admit when I first think caster, I think fireball, charm person, polymorph, and summoning galore.

You should probably look at the handbooks to get a rough idea as to what the super-powerful casters (cleric, druid, wizard) can do.

Even if it doesn't all make sense, at least it will get you thinking in the right frame of mind for the sorts of things to do with them.

IE, it makes more sense to think of the Druid as, "I am a bear with a pet bear who summons more bears" than, "I am a guy with a scimitar with a pet hawk that scouts sometimes". Things like that.

Ok! I have read the handbooks! Thanks for the links, Gavinfoxx.

I think I have a decent handle on the concepts, at least, and I'll post beta character builds for advice and the like.

I'm liking the idea of a Warforged Melee based Cleric, if not Goliath or Aasimar.
either way, I'm liking my options.

Druid-wise, I still love me some wild shape; I'd still go with Druid/Master of Many forms, empower my companion with natural spell, and wreck face as best I can. Granted that's a 15-20 level build, and I'd lose out on a lot of divine casting, now that I'm learning more about the system.

I understand wizard a bit better, but I still can't see it as a class I'd like to go into.

You want to minimize level adjustment, if at all possible.. Lesser Aasimar rather than Aasimar, for instance.

Check this out for race ideas:

Good to know.

Okay, I found some weird rules for a cavalier class in PF.

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/base-classes/cavalier#TOC-Archetypes-Alternate-Class-Features

Now it seems pretty solid, I guess, a bit different, but stuff can be changed when moved to 3.5. The confusing thing is how it's mount works; it's supposed to equate to druid level, even it the beast master Archetype, but a Medium character can get a T-rex as a mount at level 4? Isn't a T-rex a level 16/17 animal companion? I guess it got me rather confused.

Pathfinder uses wayyyyyyyyyyy different rules for animal companions than 3.5e.

You need to figure out if you are playing PATHFINDER, or 3.5e.

They are two very different games.

I play 3.5e, so that's why it caught me off guard. I've been trying to make a mounted build for a while, but it's hard to make it efficient, even. let alone optimize it even slightly without Paladin.

At any rate, what classes do you usually run? Any other tips I should know?

If you want to be a mounted build:

And I shall do the same. Soon I will optimize a Halfling Druid Outrider/Beastmaster, and it will be glorious.. And then my DM will punch me in the face for the pure absurdity that was that statement. But I don't care. Dinosaur mounts, divine spells, and wild shape for the win.
