So I'm new to D&D and I wanted to start with 3.5. I'm wanting to use dungeon tiles but I'm noticing 3.5 are hard to get and very expensive. Is it possible to use 4.0 dungeon tiles or are they only for 4th edition? Sorry if this sounds like a noob question

As long as you remember that each square is a 5ft square, there shouldn't be any problem.

So are the actual grids on 4.0 tiles the same size as 3.5?

They're close enough to be compatible. 4e figures are a liiiitle bigger, if memory serves, but not so much that they are incompatible.

You should be fine. I don't know what 4e grids look like, but a square grid is a square grid is a square grid. Maybe you end up with a slightly bigger one. Wouldn't be the end of the world. Might even open up more mini options.
My group uses a combinations of PF minis, Heroscape minis, and minis from some other game I don't know. The PF minis fit our grid just fine, but the Heroscape ones barely fit and the other game's minis have massive bases that jut out of their square on every side. The number of times our half dragon has clotheslined my warlock by accident is a bit sad.

The dimensions are exactly the same.
I use tiles and miniatures from Dungeon Command and the Adventure System games for my Pathfinder games all the time.
