Death Master: worth running?

I'm designing a death-and-undeath style NPC, and I'm wondering if he should be a death master from Dragon Compendium or just a specialist wizard. Any tips?

What other sources are available to you? Dread Necromancer and plain old Cleric are valid options to consider along that theme.
