I think I have enough of a grasp on this that I have some idea of what Japanese it translated the original text to. In that respect, it all kind of makes sense... Kind of. There are obviously some mistranslations happening both ways, but that's what makes it funny.

"Elan" happens to be a word as well as a name, meaning "spitited self assurance," so "vigor" or Vital, make sense.

We interviewed Glen Cook at Quantum Muse, and a German site trasnlated his name as "Valley Chef" more or less. Which is not inaccurate, but really, really funny.

I think that's because it translates it as short versions. For example you have Cleaveland oh, where the oh means Ohio and then writes state to make clear it's the state in the US. It just always makes it Ohio, even if not used as the short version.

Babelfish translates "Lien" to "留置権". EDICT says "留置" (transliterated "ryuuchi") means "detention" or "imprisonment", and "権" (transliterated "ken") means "right" (the noun, as in "You have the right to have your livers sold by Belkar"). Sans babelfishese, this'd probably loosely mean either "the right to detain people" or "the right to be detained"... not actually knowing Japanese, I don't know which.

So the Japanese->English half of the translation seems reasonable, but the English->Japanese half makes little sense...
