View Full Version : [3.5] Help choosing sorcerer spells

I need to build a sorcerer (with 10th level casting), but I am sorely lacking spellcasting experience. I have come up with a few spells, but I don't know what other spells I should take, or if my choices are good. I'm making a necropolitan kobold, aiming for mostly support spells.

The spells marked with an asterisk are from the Earth Bloodline Feat.

Spells I've chosen so far:

Cantrips (9 spells):
Detect magic, Read magic, Prestidigitation, Mage hand, Mending, Sonic snap, Stick, Launch item (?), No light

Level 1 (6 spells):
Enlarge person*

Level 2 (5 spells):
Rope Trick, Dimension Leap (?), Shatter*

Level 3 (4 spells):
Dispel Magic, Fly, Keen edge*

Level 4 (3 spells):
Stone shape*

Level 5 (2 spells):
Transmute rock to mud*

Can you give me any advice on what other spells to learn? I'm completely at a loss, and a bit stressed, because I still have to do gear, and make another character, by tomorrow.

Thanks!

EDIT:
I also need one 1st level spell to have as a 3/day SLA from the Draconic Rite of Passage (and Draconic Resevoir).

Sourcebooks available? WotC online articles, Dragon Magazine, Dragonlance?

Basically anything. I prefer to stick to the PH and the Spell Compendium for convenience, but I can access most sources, or my friends can.

On a quick scan through the SRD's spell list, here are some more good spells I found.
Identify (1) (get in an item)
Detect Secret Doors (1) (maybe an item)
See invisibility (2)
Blur (2)
Command Undead (2) (item)
Arcane Sight (3) (not necessary because detect magic)
Shrink Item (3)
Haste (3)
Polymorph (4)

I skipped fifth level spells, because there were quite a few good ones.

Don't get identify, it's not worth the component.
Detect Secret Doors is 5 times better in a wand
^ for see invisibility
Blur is a nice buff
Command Undead might actually be better as a spell
Arcane Sight should be made with goggles ask your DM for the market price i.e. "The Goggles of Arcane Sight"
Same as blur for haste
If your DM doesn't ban polymorph he/she is an idiot, take it with your life.

Look in unearthed arcana and ask your DM for the LA buyoff variant if it's allowed pick the blue dragonspawn template, if it's not pick the white.

No light is not that good of a spell, I'd rather have light
Spell selection for level 10 should look something like:

1 lvl: Mage Armor (the SLA)
Color Spray
Grease
Magic Missle
Silent Image
Charm Person

2 lvl:
Glitterdust (blind and reveal invisibility, like the goggles but better)
Wings of Cover (dodge an attack that would kill you)
Scorching Ray (one of the best blasters out there)
I see you picked rope trick, great resting mechanism, but it's better in wand, instead pick Ray of Stupidity

3 lvl:
Summon Monster III (this is the only Summon Monster that we're going to get)
Great Thunderclap (Daze and Deafen everyone!!!)
Chain of Eyes (one of the best divination spells)

4 lvl:
Shadow Conjuration (the Shadow line is a sorcerer's best friend)
Polymorph (hydra-ness!!!)

5 lvl:
Shadow Evocation (same as conjuration)

+1 this, but only without Chain of Eyes, it is not in sorcerers spell list.

Well, it is (SpC p. 45), but it's a second level spell for Wizards and Sorcerers, not third.

A few of my favorite things: Prismatic Ray, Baleful Polymorph, Melf's Acid Arrow, Burning Blood, Duelward, Assay Spell Resistance, Tasha's Hideous Laughter, Charm Monster, Dispel Magic, Daylight, Greater Invisibility.

Sorcerers should generally pick spells they want to cast multiple times per day, and at least one purely offensive spell per level (so they always have an option for attacking)

If you're good-aligned or can get a nongood equivalent, the Ancestral Relic Runestaff (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?267805-Sorcerer-Handbook#4) trick makes your limited number of spells known a non-issue.

For a Sorcerer 10 with Earth Bloodline, here's what I would go with if you're not using the above trick:
Draconic Rite of Passage: Nerveskitter
0 (9) - Detect Magic, Read Magic, Prestidigitation, Mage Hand, Message, Mending, Sonic Snap, Dancing Lights, Ghost Sound, Arcane Mark
1st (5) - Enlarge Person*, Power Word: Pain, Benign Transposition, Silent Image, Shield, Blockade
2nd (4) - Shatter*, Wings of Cover, Web, Glitterdust, Ray of Stupidity
3rd (3) - Keen Edge*, Stinking Cloud, Shrink Item, Heart of Water
4th (2) - Stone Shape*, Wings of Flurry, Greater Invisibility
5th (1) - Transmute Mud to Rock*, Summon Undead V

Get some or all of the Raiment of the Four set in MIC for access to Magic Missile, Fireball, Freedom of Movement, and Teleport. Get a Runestaff of Abjuration or a Runestaff of Fiendish Darkness for access to Dispel Magic and other spells. If you can just get a custom Runestaff instead, then it will be a lot easier.

Necesary Magic Items (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?187851-3-5-Lists-of-Necessary-Magic-Items), Shax's Indispensable Haversack (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?148101-3-x-Shax-s-Indispensible-Haversack-%28Equipment-Handbook%29)
