Brief Introduction

MLP: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust, currently viewed by (almost) the entire Internet, not only the intended audience. Here is a place where we discuss the joy of friendship.

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

Pixar technically makes shows for little boys, and produce some of the best animation in the world.

No Brony could ask for more. I recommend watching the episodes in order. They're all up on Youtube. Unusually, Hasbro seems fine with having the entire series up in public because they've made no move to bring down any of the episodes. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily... Or search for "Sharing is Magic" Google Doc. That is all.

Whoa, calm down there. The show is light hearted, optimistic fun but it's not for everyone. It's good fun, the community is good fun, and everyone can do with a reminder that friendship is magic but if it doesn't gel for you we'll love and tolerate you anyway. Plus, you might hit the wrong episode. Ask first?

> Derpy Hooves/Doctor Whoof

Two minor background characters who were adopted as emblems of 4chan. Derpy Hooves is so named due to an animation error in the first episode that had her eyes facing in different directions; 4chan has assigned her the role of Ponyville's mailpony, and her only line so far has been "Muffins". The show's animators are aware of Derpy's popularity and she's shown up a few times recently with her eyes obviously derped. Currently made canon in Feeling Pinkie Keen and in Faust's picture showcased below, Derpy was deemed important enough to appear in storyboards for Season II.

Dr. Whoof is a pony with an hourglass cutie mark; he and his kin save time and space very quietly off camera.

Deadly's Ironically Presented Anti-Spoiler Measures

DO YOU HATE SPOILER TAGS?

Well, Deadly's here to help you get rid of them... with a vengeance! Create a new bookmark in your browser and copy the code below as the link/url of said bookmark. Name it something helpful, like "Spoilers B GONE!" or whatever. Then whenever you view a thread here on GitP you just hit the bookmark and BAM! no more spoilers.

You won't even see the boxes, just the bare innards in all their gory glory.

It also makes sure that no image is wider than 600px, to avoid stretching pages, and will attempt to "intelligently" remove repeated images except avatars. Neat, huh? Sadly that last part means stuff like pony emotes may get lost but the forum doesn't make it easy for me to single out images in quotes as I'd have liked... that's an open problem, I guess.

Tested in Firefox, Chrome and Opera. Should work in any modern browser, but you never know with these things.

Scrappy was the ONLY reason I could even watch Scooby Doo at all; I couldn't - and still can't - stand Where Are You? And even then, it was tolerance (because in them days, children's telly was not something you got a lot of, so you watched even fairly naff things if it was the only thing on), with 13 Ghosts being the first time I'd genuinely enjoyed a series. (Which was about actual Undead... Coincidence? I think not...)

Which is why I'm most often surprised at the more modern stuff (starting with the tv-movie films in the late ninties) is actually watchable and even good... funnily enough, since they started adding, y'know, personalities to the cast (and even, on occasion, differentiating between Shaggy and Scooby who are otherwise nearly one character) and some level of subtle humour. (And ditching the laugh track...)

Ah, Shadow Raiders... Another series that ended before it's time. Though at least it didn't cut off half-way through a serious cliff-hanger like Reboot. There was a series that really didn't pull punches. Heck, they killed off two major and one recurring character ONSCREEN, and one of 'em was one of the only two faces of the faceless enemy (and arguably something of the Comic Relief villain, though it just goes to show that even the Inept Henchman wasn't that inept, seeing the body count of people he outright murdered before the end...)

Hell, I saw it at the cinema. I'm not so jaded I can't find Scrappy's complete derailment to be utterly hilarious, especially coming as it did out of the blue, with no inkling that where they were going...! It was worth it alone for his final line...

(Actually, I have seen both cinematic and the first of two telly movies and I thought they were quite enjoyable.)

(Actually, it DOES make more sense, since BananaMan, after all, is primarily a comic character from the Dandy, so with all the other superhero coming becoming movies, it makes sense to have one from this side of the pond! I'll be looking more into this shortly...!)

Those are great films. Wreck-it Ralph in particular. It blows my mind how they got the animation style so spot-on for the content.

Speaking of the thread title. I skipped that episode. I got a bad vibe from it and just went "ugh, the fey always ruin everything."

I had this idea pop in my head the other night about Trixie getting a Breezie sidekick. A Sancho Panza to Trixie's Don Quioxte. Just haven't gotten a strong story idea for it.

I'm still waiting for a pro athlete (preferably football) to come out as a brony. I can definitely see Chris Kluwe doing something along those lines.

Okay, who builds a seal for a Generic Invulnerable Demon World Destroying Monster that consists of:

A completely unguarded, easily accessed cave who's only remotely defensive feature is that nobody amazingly happened across it, considering it is within a short drive of an alien settlement.

A infinity symbol torq which is the key to both containing the monster and using the off switch if it does get out (???). Okay... Fine so far. How do you secure this across the doors, then?

Two protrusion that are basically glorified coat hooks. Over which you just place the torq. No seal, no securing spells, not glue not nothing, just physically basically a hoop over a stick on either door, so easily dislodger that a two-foot construct who has refined inane stupidty into an art form can accidently know it lose by falling over.

Only in a dream, right? Still, it was at least amking a spirited attempt at trying to do some genuine story-telling (though dear frag, can none of the voice cast actually emote apart from Sawboss?) And then they literally have an apparently depowered Sawboss (who's in fact, genuninely there) dead to rights, Herc's got a gun pointed at his head, and Jayce is like "no Herc, if we kill him now we'll just be as bad as he is."

(Contrast this to the penultimate episode of Shadow Raiders, where the only reason Jade didn't shoot the bad girl in the head from point blank range was because someone knocked her out.)

Just to underline how utterly irresponscible that decision was - next episode features a planet who's civilisation was wiped out by the monster mines, save for the children (the, one suspects, fairly few children) they managed to hide away. Just so we were clear on whether the monster mines were actually killing people.

(I'd also like to know how that last episode's statement of "all life is sacred" ties into the way you cheerfully butcher the making-a-pretty-good-case for sentient/sapient monster mines, which, being part plant, definitely qualify as "life" - or with after in the same episode as you failed to kill Sawboss, you went a bit berserk on the monster mines you thought had killed your father.)

Right, Jayce, every person who dies between now and the end of the season is on your head, because you hold your personal sense of arrogant morale superiority as being more important than other people's lives.

Eh.... C&C 4 isn't a bad game, it's just not a patch on the standard of the earlier ones. I've actually sunk an hour or two into it already, pumping my XP up to unlock all the nod. Another couple of horus futsing with the GDI (for the sake of it) and then the last chunk of the Nod campaign and I'm done.

Grinding the skirmish mode okay for short bursts of mindless explodey mayhem... I am setting up five Easy AI enemy Defending units and me with three allied Brutal AI, so really all I have to do is putter about and wrack the XP up.

It was either that or Genesis (which has no in mission save, good job on an RTS guys), DA:O Evil run through (in the big long not so interesting Dwarf underdeep place thing) or DA:Awakening/ DA 2 or going through the massive effort of reinstalling Soulstorm to finish that off;' none of which I felt I could face this evening. C&C 4 was already there, especially since I didn't even have to grab a DVD out... And it's change of pace from the slow-build RTS of the rest but which doesn't require any real brain power or being to frenetically twitchy.

To me, Frozen isn't so much a story as it is a folktale. The characters are given little to no chance to develop, besides from labeling this one "the quiet withdrawn ice queen" and the other "the warm, outgoing, summer spirit."

And that's okay.

See, it's more of a story that you can imagine a nana telling to her grandchildren as the wind drives the snow against the windows and the fire crackles in the hearth. Simple characters, dealing with simple issues, and with a warm, feel-good lesson at the end.

With that said, I love the amount of love put into the animations, the details, the little reflections off the ice crystals. The songs fill their purpose nicely. And what's more, I love the lesson about love banishing fear.

An elevator episode is the 'everyone gets stuck in a room and just talks the whole time" episode. I spent the first year of our changeling game trying to sart one, even. If you have strong charavters with good interaction, you don't really need a plot.

Hello again, ponythread! How long has it been since my last post? ... I suspect at least a dozen threads, probably more. Sorry for the long absence, been doing a lot of other things lately...

Anyhow, I decided to draw the Mane Six once more, a first in several months, and I came up with the following:

Can't say I'm satisfied with the results. My hands really got rusty from lack of use. Not that I've not been drawing, no, it's just that I haven't been drawing ponies. I better practice more to at least return to my previous level of skill.

Now I should come up with an explanation for my players why I decided to draw ponies when there are at least 10 outstanding D&D illustrations that I am supposed to have completed long ago...

I usually don't get to see Disney sequels. The few I did see are sequels for Lion King and Mulan, and I didn't exactly like Mulan 2.

Hm, let's see... It was mostly just Macao, six days in the casino city and just a day and a half in Hong Kong. Walked each day until my feet went numb, and then walked back to the hotel until I couldn't feel my knees. It was fun, though, glorious fun! Here's some photos I took over there!

Thank you! Well, looks like I messed up on Jade. It seems that dynamism is still a beast I've yet to conquer - I try some dynamic pose and the skeleton always borks. I still have some very similar pictures coming up with Jade's party members Cato and Hellion, so I guess I can try to fix the issue on those.

The picture is drawn with the original skeleton intact, so the issue would be a problem with the skeleton-pose compound itself. I need to look into poses again. It's really hard to get a dual-weapon character to look right, if you ask me...

Actually, I can see that whole episode panning out, with Dash or Spike being Cat (because of the level of tact involved - while Rarity does have the requiste fashion level, I think she's slightly more tactful... Actually, no, scratch that, I CAN see her snarking like much though on somepony she doesn't like... So Rarity as Cat and maybe RD for the bits of CAT Rarity couldn't cover...), Twilight as Kryten (obviously) and Applejack as Lister... Thank you! Well, looks like I messed up on Jade. It seems that dynamism is still a beast I've yet to conquer - I try some dynamic pose and the skeleton always borks. I still have some very similar pictures coming up with Jade's party members Cato and Hellion, so I guess I can try to fix the issue on those.

The picture is drawn with the original skeleton intact, so the issue would be a problem with the skeleton-pose compound itself. I need to look into poses again. It's really hard to get a dual-weapon character to look right, if you ask me...

The skeleton might be the issue then. It's a classic pose designed to show off the buttocks af also the bust; the left-most leg would normally be the character's left leg, with the other having a crooked knee to show off the plot better. But... That doesn't make much anatomical sense, so it looks like you corrected it, making the leftmost leg the right leg. But the positioning is now off because the skeletal positioning is for a pelvis 180° from there along the z axis!

Or I'm tired. I don't even know, I'm going off memory. I want to stress again that your work is phenomenal.

Actually, I can see that whole episode panning out, with Dash or Spike being Cat (because of the level of tact involved - while Rarity does have the requiste fashion level, I think she's slightly more tactful... Actually, no, scratch that, I CAN see her snarking like much though on somepony she doesn't like... So Rarity as Cat and maybe RD for the bits of CAT Rarity couldn't cover...), Twilight as Kryten (obviously) and Applejack as Lister... (WEhy, well, she IS a bit of a slob, and she does have a certain requiste level of snark...)

Olaf is primarily defined as being a sweetheart. The slap stick comes from taking his newborn naïveté at face value, but the core of him is that he's so damn genuine it is touching. Like most of the movie he is an attempt to take a standard trope and do something more nuanced with it. With Olaf at least I feel they succeeded.

So, I just read the first three Friends Forever comics.

I felt like I got thrown in the deep end. Suddenly- Contest GO!

Turned out I'd missed a couple of pages. :smallsigh:

Anyway, it was a nice little story, some fun bits here and there. Absolutely awful OC designs though. Oh, and a pony called Blade Sparxx. Really? On the plus side, I love the judges. We got a pretty awesome female buffallo, an older griffon, and (I think) a hindu pony!

Also, Pinkie and the Brain reference. Always good.

A cute story with lots of references and a heart-warming ending. What could be better? I do like Discord as a full-on prankster instead of a villain. Loved some of the costumes the CMC were in too. Scootaloo's flaming figure-skating outfit, pony rangers, lion tamers, super heroes (I think that's Cyborg (Sweetie-Bot?), Hawk Girl, and... Starfire, maybe?).

Is it me or did they seem to make Sweetie Belle extra dumb this time. "I didn't know we were supposed to be thinking. Can you stop so I can catch up?"

Still, this was a really good issue.

Even better! Spike got to be a hero, and so did Celestia for once. Really addresses the issue of Celestia's power level well, and even takes a potshot at the Iron Hoof and Trollestia theories.

I believe that was from Faust after she left the show, what Meghan thinks of their relationship is unknown, if anything at all. Plus the comic's canon status is pretty iffy and as far as I know show-to-comic communication comes down to reading scripts and making sure they aren't doing the same thing so it could be if there is any official explanation they are just ignoring it.

In a minor or supporting role she's often jarring or annoying. When she's the focus of the episode she can be a very deep and entertaining character. Anyone else feel the same way?

Kinda? Pinkie was funny in Apples to the Core, Party of One, and Too Many Pinkie Pies. I think that in her prominent roles she's given time to set up her jokes properly. Whereas in support roles she just throws up a joke with no buildup for it.

Indeed. I have been around enough babies - between sisters, cousins, nieces family friends and Mum being a childminder for a while - to have no illusions about them what so ever. Babies are great for some entertainment... So long as you aren't the one that has to change nappies or get up in the middle of the night. (Which, of course, I never have.)

I also have a +8 cirumstance bonus to resist the deleterious effects of crying babies, having been exposed to so many...

That sounds like it could work, the only issue I can think of is the whole real-time aspect really screwing things up for people in less Ponythread-represented time zones. Also makes more detailed thoughts harder to communicate.

Hi everypony, and welcome! I'm Jade, and I'll be your lovely assistant for this lesson! Not too many ponies are familiar with the Internet Relay Chat protocol, and that's where I'm here to help! For those who don't know, IRC is a chat protocol similar to AIM and MSN, instant messengers we're all familiar with. There's a few things you need to get IRC working, so let's take a look at what they are.

1. IRC Chat Client
2. Server and Server Information
3. Channel Name
4. Brief List of Important Commands

1. IRC Chat Client
So, the first thing you need is a program that can handle IRC. These programs tend to be lightweight, and in some cases can be, or already are integrated into programs you already use every day. For example, do you use the web browser Opera (http://www.opera.com/) or the Instant Messaging Client Pidgin (http://www.pidgin.im)? Then you already have a program capable of supporting your server. If this is the case, you can skip on down to the next section. If not however, you're gonna need to download one.

Personally, I recommend one such as XChat 2 (http://www.silverex.org/news/) or mIRC (http://www.mirc.com/), but it's really not hard to find your own alternative. Just remember, don't be tricked into paying for an IRC client. There are tons upon tons of free options out there.

2. Server and Server Information
Okay, so you've got a program that can run IRC. Now what do you do? Well, first things first you need to do is figure out what server you're going to be connecting to. In our case, you will be connecting to:

This is usually pretty simple. It'll be a different process for each separate client, but they all tend to be pretty similar. There's generally a tools tab, followed by an options tab. There will be a field looking for the server to connect to. Type in what's in the quote box above, enter a username (you don't need to register it if you don't want to, that will be covered in section 4), and you're good to go! It should connect to the main page of the Sorcery IRC server. From there, you can go hunting for your channel.

3. Channel Name
This is a pretty simple one. In our case, the channel name is:

And you know how you join that? Just type into the text box at the bottom of your IRC client "/join #ponythread" and you're in! There's a bit more we can do with chanels though. Say you want to see if there are any other pony related channels in the server. Well, from any window on the Sorcery server, you can type in "/list" to get a list of all of the channels on the server. From there, you can use the "/join" command to join that channel too! Most channels have a # preceding their name, so remember that.

4. Brief List of Important Commands
/msg [NAME] This allows you to send a private message to [NAME].
/msg NickServ This allows you to send a message to the Nickname Server on the Sorcery IRC network. You can type "/msg NickServ HELP" from any window to get help with your nickname. This includes registering a floating nickname, changing the password on your nickname, and other different commands you can check out from there.
/list This allows you to see a list of all channels on the current server.

This list will be edited as time goes on, and more commands become pertinent.

What does it mean to have a voice?

There are a number of different designations that can be assigned to IRC users, to determine what privileges they hold in a channel. The designation you'll see most frequently is +v, for voice. This is represented in the list of people in the channel by a + before someone's name in mIRC, or the image of a speaker after someone's name on mibbit. What having a voice means is that the user in question can continue to chat unhindered even if the channel is set to +m, for mute!

Setting a channel to mute prevents anyone without a voice from speaking. This is something that we might do if we were to ever be infested by spammy parasprites who were making it impossible to have real conversation, so that then only the ponies we know and recognize could talk.

You can be given a voice by anyone with OP (operator) or H-OP (half-operator) status, the former represented by a @ (or a star in Mibbit), and the latter by a % (or half of a star). These are the people who can kick or ban disruptive users, change channel modes, etc etc. Ops have more privileges in this regards than hops do.

How do I speak using colored font? Or in bold, or italics, or underlined?

This will vary depending on your choice of IRC client.

In Mibbit, it's simple! You just use the "colours" button down at the bottom of the screen, below the chat bar.

In mIRC, pressing ctrl+k will bring up a box showing a number of different colors. You can then choose one and it will automatically enter the appropriate color code. You can then type whatever it was you wanted colored. If you put a comma immediately after your color code, and then enter another color code, the first number will be the color of your text, and the second will be the color of your text's background. For example, ctrl+k - 4,1Testing would result in red font with a black background.

In mIRC, you can also use ctrl+b for bold text, ctrl+i for italics, ctrl+u to underline, and ctrl+o to make any text entered after that point default to normal. Alternatively, you can highlight whatever it is you want changed with your mouse, before entering it, and then use the ctrl+k/b/i/u commands to change just that part of what you had written.

If you use a different IRC client, please consult its documentation, or try Google. We can't help there!

How do I register my nickname?

Registering your nickname is a requirement for you to be auto-voiced or auto-oped upon joining (otherwise, a moderator needs to do so manually). It also allows you to protect yourself from anyone who might try and "steal" it, using your name for themselves. All you need is an e-mail address; just follow these easy steps!

First, type "/nickserv register *DESIRED PASSWORD* *your e-mail*". So, for example, "/nickserv register mypassword123 [email protected]"

Make sure that the e-mail address you entered was valid. Your IRC nickname will be tied to it.

Wait a few minutes, then go and check your e-mail. You should have one that looks something like this:
Hi,

You have requested to register the nickname "PoniesAreAwesome".

Please type " /msg NickServ confirm yLh5NhewS " into your IRC client to complete the registration.

If you don't know why this mail has been sent to you, please ignore it.

This mailbox is not monitored. Replies to this e-mail will NOT get responded to.

It will be from [email protected], and the topic will be something following the format of "Nickname Registration (YourNameHere)." Just follow the instructions in the e-mail, and you're registered!

After registering, you'll need to confirm yourself each time you log in, by typing "/nickserv identify *insert password here*". You don't /need/ to, but features like auto-op won't function unless you do.

It's not as complicated as it seems. You just click the link in the post you quoted, type in a nickname when the client prompts you, and then you're in. All there is to it.

Tried that, didn't work.

took me somewhere else where I had to pick a nick again , and type a channel, and that didn't take me anywhere.

If it puts you into the green "sorcery" tab, use the command /join #ponythread to go to the right channel.

EDIT: Oh! If it brings up a "Please pick another nickname" window it means you picked one that is registered.

The crew (whichever ponies you like) begin to explore the station, searching to try and find some things they can scrounge as parts for the ship, and come to the realisation that the station is basically Space IKEA, with room after room that are practially biomes of Space Furniture.

They find a room where the Space TVs would have been (all gone, taken when the station was abandoned), a room of Space Paint, Space Light Fixtures, Space Alien Chairs and a Space Crystal Garden Centre.

What other rooms of Space Alien Furniture/appliances might they find?

If the P.... er... ponies weren't going to have to be dealing with the entirely not 5000 year old aliens that have come back to the galaxy to find somepony going through there old abandoned Space IKEA and setting summoned demons on them, a 5000-year old mechanical servitor droid trying to, I dunno, do a sort of Oxpecker or cleaner wrasse service on the decidedly biological P... ponies (who probably don't have the same sort of service hatches) could be quite humourous (for me) and/or horrific and bloody (for the P... ponies).

Actually, the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of the aliens having some sort of "pet/applicance" they use to clean/do stuff to parts of the anatomy they can't reach as easily and other menial tasks to be quite a good one. Shades of somewhere between the Jetsons, the Flintstones and the Reapers...!

Edit: Actually, screw it, I think that's such a good idea, it's not only worthy of doing, that needs to be one of the places the P... ponies need to go to get the components they require and have it basically BE the component, just to garentee they pick it up and turn it on/have it activate...

It's a LEGO Movie reference, but the set up is the same as with a bunk bed (You can Google Double Decker Couch for examples).

Now that I'm thinking about it, your situation reminds me of a D&D adventure I ran two years ago~ The PCs investigated this odd "giant face" in the snow and found a metallic dungeon full of weird constructs, ghosts, and furniture that would better work with a giant spider than a humanoid creature.

(It was a space ship buried under the snow, which made a sort of 'face on Mars' look).

If these creatures are spider-ish, one idea is that their "floors" can cover walls and ceilings as well. In my adventure, the floor was this semi-organic thatching (like spider webbing) that the aliens used to walk on. It ran on walls and ceilings too, so the concept of "floor" was rather loose for them.

The fun was when there were times that things like door controls were up out of reach and the PCs had to problem-solve their way to reach the controls.

These guys have huge clearance relative to a biped for width; one of our human corridors would fit two or three humans and one of them. Floor space is premium. So the standard resting, and possibly guarding, position would be one of suspension. A sort of hammock, a disk for holding the bulk of the creature held up by a number of cables in tension through a pulley system, the number being relational to their leg axis symmetry.

They pull down a hammock, get on and can winch themselves out of the way, while retaining a relaxed alertness comparable to a human on a stool (versus the inverse cone "human in their knickers under the covers").

I really really really want to read a story where something like this happens.

This whole thing came about from me inadvertently using the phrase "like a biome of furniture" to describe what I was seeing while going around IKEA for about the second time ever and going "... Huh. Well, that sorts that quest entirely hypothetical pony situation out then."

'Tis fairly linear, but this is a fracking massive space station-type version, so linearity is less of the useful feature.

(Though at the stage they'd got to the time Space IKEA would have been built (the station was built 4000 years ago, the IKEA part was a recent brief refurbishment 400 years ago), they were at the sort of level where they could afford just to go really big. Especially since some of them were, like fifteen foot high and twenty in space. And they left the galaxy 4000 years ago after they built their own dimension, basically.)

Still, they would probably be having some sort of legacy from the older times, just for tradition, so such might be in use, but a bit more elaborate. (E.g. the fact the station has atmosphere - breathable (if a little thin with only 18% oxygen) atmosphere - is a similar legacy from their homeworld.)

Heehee, you reminded me of a thing.
It was a modern alien invasion kind of campaign, where the aliens hide among humans. They created a food company called "Homogeny Foods". The food was of average quality, but economically cheap. The weirdness began with their can labels: It had a logo of two kids smiling behind a dog dish that was filled with whatever product was in the can.

From there, it gets progressively weirder. They would can just about any kind of dish from expected things like fruits and soups, but they'd also can stuff like pizza, apple pie, burgers, and fish sticks. The foods looked "almost but not quite Earthian", yet tasted perfectly normal. Examples:

Macaroni & Fooble: Tastes like mac-n-cheese, but the cheese is blue.
Quaav Burgers: An all-beef burger with bacon, except the meat is white.
Splath: Looks like a mushy lime, tastes like apples.

None of the food was toxic or bad in any way (Well, no worse than eating the normal version of the food). Its weirdness made the product really popular and thus the aliens ended up taking over parts of the world by simply buying it.

I am probably the only person in existance that is crazy enough to use Space IKEA as a setting for an adv... entirely hypothetical pony exploration thing.

The closest I had was a Buy-N-Large equipped with it's own subway station to get around the store. Pretty mundane compared to a Space Station.

(E.g. the fact the station has atmosphere - breathable (if a little thin with only 18% oxygen) atmosphere - is a similar legacy from their homeworld.)

Guy: "HEY! Don't open that! It's an alien planet! Is there air? You don't know!"

Aaannd that's C&C 4 done. And sadly the Nod ending is just as banal as the GDI one. I mean, it's not th worst ending ever, but as a finale to a franchise, it's got to be right up there. You end up with still more questions than answers. It's like Lost (though I never watched that)... They had all this foreshadowed excitement in C&C 3 and then just... Never showed us anything.

Dear FRAG that woman that was supposed to be the general's missus was awful. In pretty much every respect, physically, personality, acting lack of ability or narratively. The whole game I was like "no, really Kane, honestly, you can kill her, or I'll die, thank frack, just keep that abomination away from me!" I think if you get to the point where I, Commadore freaking "I really don't care" Bleakbane, is going "ye gods, couldn't they at least have picked someone who doesn't make me slightly ill just looking at her1, if she's going to be a shrill, pathetic transparent plot attempt used to generate a false sense of emotional attachement (I mean first in order for the "death" no mean anything you'd have not make the player cheer when it happens and cry when it's revealed as untrue2)?" you have fracked it beyond belief. I suspect the commander must have been very, very VERY drunk because there is not a single positive to be said for her.

Ahem. I thought I got all that out of the way when I first played the game, but apparently not.

1I might have made a comparison to faces and horse's rears, but you know what, I'd RATHER look at any pony's plot you care to name other than that.

You mean that just and only using FMV doesn't capture the spirit of the C&C games? I've seen the ending (oh dear moon princess why), but I checked out of the series as a whole after they retconned the entirety of Tiberium Sun (you know, the best game of the series) away.

You know, the one that still left the main antagonist mysterious in so many ways while still having a satisfying ending they could build off of AND as much B action movie as you can comprehend.

But no, they had to make things more MODERN WARFARE. Can't have fun when that happens, and you surely couldn't have made a sequel to one of the best multiplayer sleeper games ever right?

Yes, sidebars can be hidden, but the two brown bars on the sides of the screen cannot be erased by magnification or fiddling with browser settings. Maybe it's just my screen, but two dark patches on uniformly bright screen (I use minimal Firefox interface to maximize viewing area) are both distracting and kind of tiring for eyes, at least as far I can tell with brief testing. Maybe I'll get used to it, but if not, looks like custom css will be required :smallfrown:

Also, since we now have full screen forum and no one produced 800x600 screens for years, can we now have maximum image width in rules raised to 1000+ pixels, please? :smallconfused:

So this is going to be probably a lengthy post, because I apparently have a need to ramble deeply ingrained into my psyche now.

Also, note you can just hide the sidebar, which gives you a much better width. Given that aside from seeing a new comic is up by the colour of the link, I never use the sidebar, I think this is probably a net plus.

Okay. So I wasn't going to do this, what with the forums down... But I really couldn't help myself.

Initial thoughts, as done and stored on day in question:

(Oddly, I read a fanfic about Rarity doing an order for Sapphire Shores which sort of had a simialr theme earlier this morning.)

Also... Fifth birthday party. This is useful for a couple of reasons.

First, it conclusively puts the nails in the coffin of real-world pony aging cycles - terrestial equines reach physical maturity by about five, which would indicate then, ponies at least being on human aging cycles.

Second as it places Sweetie's age in relation to Rarity's cutie-mark. Given that Rarity was apparently fully grown (or very near to) during the fifth birthday party, it would seem to indicate a modest amount of time between the two. It could be as much as 5+ years (if Sweetie wasn't born then), but is probably not much less than a couple, given the growth (especially if we take the fact the CMC have not noticably aged in the time frame of the show, which has been estimated at what, between one to two year's depending on how convinced you are that one season => one year.

Having established we're on at least human aging cycles, I would estimate that the time Cutie Marks => fifth birthday party is probably not less than five years, possibly more is we assume ponies thus reach adult size at a comparative age. If we assume Rarity is at least 17-18 at the time of fifth birthday party and cutie marks are (modally) gained at adolences (12 ish), we're looking at probably round six of seven years. (Could also be higher or lower, of course.)

That, in turn, gives us another boundary condition for Spike (good on him, for turning up to Sweetie's show!), who has got to be that time interval older than the CMC.

(Now, you could argue that only a year had passed since Rarity gaining her cutie-mark - it seems unlikely you'd grow from filly to fully-grown mare in much less than that time - Spike might be younger than Sweetie, but I think that seems the more unlikely of the two.

I suppose you might even broach the question as to whether getting your cutie mark accelerates your growth to adulthood, but that seems less plausible given the CMC's clasmates. (And also if you never got your mark, yo'd never reach adulthood, which is a bit dark...))

Nothing - as usual - completely definitive, of course - aside from definite proof of non-terrestial equine aging patterns, but stronger evidence. If we get another datum point, of course, we'll really starting to be getting somewhere.

Also Twilight's 500th birthday (http://www.fimfiction.net/story/116254/1/princess-twilight-sparkles-500th-birthday/chapter-1) and it's sequel Twilight's 505th birthday (http://www.fimfiction.net/story/119255/17/princess-twilight-sparkles-505th-birthday/epilogue).

The first is a look 500 years ahead to Twilight's new student - nice in and of itself; and it leads into the second, which is a really good piece of adventure with a grand balance of seriousness and humour.

And, while we're at it: Highball (http://www.fimfiction.net/story/177359/the-railway-ponies-highball), a Descendant story - a criminally under appreciated (soley I suspect, because it does not involved any major characters), beautiful piece about railroads and progress (and slathered with a good deal of history). I would recommend it to everypony except Rater (given his stated aversion to things that will make him cry).

Initial Thoughts parte the seconde:

Good episode - nearly a Granny Smith episode, which is a first.

Mac's eeyup and eenope as only speaking lines gag is starting to wear a bit thin on me, personally: doubly so since we know he's perfectly capable of normal speech.

A good morale, I think - one equally as true (with teh internets) now as during the days of the snake oil salesmen. (Point to Flim and Flam, I suppose, in that they were selling a placebo and not, like many of the histroical quacks, something that would ACTUALLY kill you.) Though clearly they have gone from having something that was actually a vaguely decent idea to out-and-out sleeze...

Granny Smith's sepia flashback again puts me of again early silent movies. It's saying at least late nineteenth century to me (from presentation, and even the streetlamps in the background), so even if we assume ponytech is only 1940-50s and given Granny appears to be not a filly, she can't be less than about seventy (and still may be much older.)

(Yeah, I'mma gonna keep analysising the pony-age thing until we finally have some concrete evidence!)

That said, her age is apparently more a psycological than actual issue, since all it took was one placebo to have her running around. (Heck, I don't know may folk at even seventy-ish wohi'd want to be climbing all the way up to the top of that diving board...)

Also. Lyra! (And that little piece seems so utterly consistent with so many fan Lyras...)
Derpy! (presumably there with Sparkler - and what have you been doing, duck, you had your horn in bandage and then your neck in a brace...!)
And Cloud Kicker (especially on my mind given Winning Pony has finally concluded *sigh*) - what were you doin' there, you weren't even bandaged!)

Been a good couple of episodes.

I have spent the past week mostly fiddling with the Herosines, since my shapeways order came (that used up pretty much a day there, just taking pictures and appending stuff to the Shapeways site1) and then I've been painting. Fortunately for my sanity, the Herosine's colours (hey, there's an autosave feature, it just flagged up while I was typing, neat!!) are basically the same up to the top layer. Less good, I'm starting to run out of the Citidel paints for blue (my second-darkest blue is out, forunately I can get away without it) which means I need to have a very close look at replacaments at Triples (there are conversion charts, but they haven't always been that close.) And I do have four infantry squads, five base turrets, four grav drone and twenty-two AFVs to paint. Which is a long job. I've basically done the Eques (along with all the railgun turrets), turrets and drones first, leaving the Turma and infantry (and the alternate Eques turrets) which I'm working on currently.

I have not, as I suspected, attempted to write anything for April Fool's, since I had no real ideas at all, at least not enough to actually be workable. Eh, two in two years was being a bit optimistic...

1I even typed to a huge post to the starship forum, showing comparisons between shapeways and Replicator models in detail... Which no-one replied to. And while I know on the Paizo site, people are reading the RotRL blither I keep posting, it's mostly lurking: which I don't mind, but it is useful to have people, y'know, talk back occasionally. That's the thing about here, while I am totally used to talking to myself all the time, it is nice to occasionally have people go "yeah, that's nice" in a distracted/slightly irritated fashion once in a while...

I don't think the old site navigation tabs' texture goes with the new layout. The words in relief and the shadows "cast" by the backgrounds seem out of place with the more two-dimensional layout. But the color scheme's nice and unobtrusive.

The Giant put up an announcement that they'll refine the layout over the next few weeks. So it should get prettier later on. :3

I created a monopony on changeling OCs in irc. XD Okay, maybe not, but I did have fun going to the ponythread's chatroom. That was nice. Also... held my daughter's birhtday party (wow, turned 6 now?!) and she got lots of stuff including more Equestria girls dolls (she loved the Trixie one I got her) and she got the new Rarity, Sweetie Belle, and Scootaloo at Build-a-Bear (oh yeah, keep feedin' the habbit).

Let's see, I wrote a paper examining whether the FDA could regulate the sale of an app that tells you your life expectancy, converted The Snows of Summer to accommodate six Mythic PCs in anticipation of running its AP someday (face to face only; I'm not a reliable PbP GM), learned that my dad's pension and my whole family's health insurance are both going to be in jeopardy come July, finally made some goddamned sense out of the Kingdom Hearts franchise, and enjoyed two very Pony episodes.

...now everyone but Twi has their keys! Let's just hope AJ doesn't spend hers.

It was an alright episode for me. Fairly average in that nothing super awesome happened, but nothing really bad happened either. The 5th birthday party thing was great in helping figure out pony ages. I do believe there is now a stronger argument of pony aging to work close to human aging.

Another fairly average episode for me, by much of the same reasons as the prior one. Of course, Average doesn't mean bad in any way. I still enjoyed watching these eps. This one a little more though, as AJ and her family tend to be a real treat to watch in their antics. Granny's 6-story high dive into a pan of water reminds me of the old Loony tunes thing... Bugs bunny I believe tossed Elmer Fudd into a drinking glass once.

Anyway, another Flim-Flam song for fun! Not as catchy as their first, but the style is somewhat there. Definitely moreso than my spelling (40% error rate!). It was noted elsewhere that unlike the other Rainbow key episodes, AJ didn't need any of the other mane6 in the episode to take care of business. Haha, point for AJ.

Lyra really took that spotlight near the end. Love her moreso now. I think if she had a speaking line I would have just about died of the cuteness. So... yeah, moral of the story: Apples are delicious.

Putting it very briefly, given all the information in the hypo about how people were using the app, I think that the app meets the criteria of being a device with dangerous collateral measures associated with its use that the FDA Commissioner can only be reasonably assured of mitigating by restricting its sale. But that's just me :smallsmile:

I have to agree with Trixie, those little brown bars at the sides make the whole thing looks so much brighter. I'm not a fan. But I'm not a fan of change in general, so it's not terribly surprising. Overall new layout itsn't too bad (I don't quite like the rounded corners either).

Anyways, I was sick the whole time, which made me feel hugely productive despite not being since I sat at home and worked all week.

I thought the new episodes were great, as always. More detailed thoughts unlikely to follow.

Oh yeah, one more thing I noticed about new layout: links aren't underlined anymore which makes them impossible to notice with only the slightly different text colour to distinguish. That is something that needs to change.

I really liked the Sweetie episode. The combination of Newly Magical Filly and Dream Princess (and I note that Sweetie went to a first name basis with Luna. Twilight is corrupting pony youth!) was enough to captivate me.

And I was stoked about how well I called AJ's episode in advance. I'm not really good at that.

But it really is just bad Star Wars self insert fanfiction but with Spike. And yet there is a seed of an idea here. Like, the way "good" is defined in MLP has certain commonalities but also radical differences from how the Jedi define "good" and that there is something interesting to that clash of values.

I do love how the Jedi reaction is to throw up their hands and claim they can't help him get home after basically no actual effort, and then shanghai him into joining the Order.

I kinda chuckled when AJ told the truth to everyone about the tonic. They all had that look of "oh, yeah guess I'm kinda dumb for believing it too" and so everyone just pretended nothing was wrong and went back to their lives. No damage done to AJ's reputation. Meanwhile, Flim and Flam are running for the border with their evuil schemes. :smalltongue:

I can understand the terminology for it (I usually see male versions as Marty Stu, though that is also a girls name), but... just the very thought of Spike being a Sue type boggles my mind. :smalltongue:
Though the fact I can almost see it in Star Wars might say something about my trust in that universe...

My daughter has the Build-A-Bear Rarity, Sweetie Belle, and Scootaloo dolls now. Rarity is on par with the rest of them, though the eyes came out quite nice. Sweetie Belle's plush is alright. Scoot's though... I dunno just seems extra adorable with her tiny wings and big eyes. Pretty darn cute.

Rumor mill from the BAB (Ha!) employees is that Applejack and Apple bloom will come out at the same time. No word if AJ gets her hat or not though. Also, one employee noticed there's a 'SKU' number reserved in the system under the name "Trixie". HMMMMMMM. :D :D :D

Eh, it was pretty much okay all over. Okay song, not much humor, Flim/Flam brothers were kind of neat, we got another key, Applejack should be glad Granny didn't pull a Gwen Stacy when she grabbed her, not sure what else to say.

I created a monopony on changeling OCs in irc. XD Okay, maybe not, but I did have fun going to the ponythread's chatroom. That was nice. Also... held my daughter's birhtday party (wow, turned 6 now?!) and she got lots of stuff including more Equestria girls dolls (she loved the Trixie one I got her) and she got the new Rarity, Sweetie Belle, and Scootaloo at Build-a-Bear (oh yeah, keep feedin' the habbit).
Not as much as I wanted to. Came extremely close to finishing up Human Revolution: Director's Cut, finished Buffy Season 6 (Actually not quite as bad as the Internet makes it sound, at least for the first half or so), finished Angel Season 3, started replaying Tomb Raider, finished up some real-life stuff I won't bore you guys with, but I still felt like I could have done more or emptied more back logs but...

See, I somehow managed to be even less productive than usual with the forums gone. It's like it shook up my internal schedule, but instead of converting that time into doing something useful, I instead overcompensated and found even more things to distract myself with.
...This. I spent most of the new time just screwing around the Internet, not using the extra free time to do real life stuff or finishing up fictional stuff. :smallsigh:

EDIT: Okay, removing sidebars makes it look a lot better. I think my Subscriptions are all screwed up though.
EDIT-2: Search is back, everything is now justified. No more screwing around with Google trying to dig around weird archived versions of threads. :smallbiggrin:
EDIT-3: Now it feels really weird switching from the rest of the site to the forums given the different interface.
