How would I go about making a powerful ogre mage pc using the savage species progression?

I'm thinking either a wizard, cleric, favored soul, or duskblade build after they finish their monster levels, but have no idea what feats or any form of prestiege that would mold well with such character?

Also what would be a good strategy to get some use out of the character in combat and out before it picks up class levels?

Ogre Mage is a 12th level character with only 5 HD, you'll be seven levels behind everyone else in BAB, base saves, skill points, and HP, and twelve levels behind everyone else in spellcasting if you make the character a spellcaster. It's not even playable unless on a gestalt character, and even then it's extremely mediocre.

Make a Half-Giant (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/psionicRaces.htm#halfGiants) or a Half-Ogre from Races of Destiny with the Primordial Giant template in Secrets of Xen'drik, and get the intermediate ogre bloodline (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/races/bloodlines.htm#ogre). That will get all the flavor of being an Ogre Mage without wasting twelve levels on it.

A half ogre with the intermediate bloodline looks fun, would a wizard or favored soul build be possible to do effectively? How would such be built?

With Primordial Giant a Half-Ogre would get Str +2, Dex -2, Con +0, Int +2, Wis +0, Cha +2, and can use Invisibility at will. They also get a +2 to Spellcraft, so I'd say Wizard. Since the Ogre Bloodline gets Power Attack for free, consider some sort of arcane gish build. Use this Wizard variant (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#wizard) from UA to get a Fighter feat at the 1st and 5th level, and go Wizard 6/ Swiftblade (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/prc/20070327) 9/ Abjurant Champion 5. Just be sure to buy off your level adjustment (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/races/reducingLevelAdjustments.htm) so you can eventually catch back up.

Thank you for all the help, all try building this right away it seems really fun to play.

Any spells altered due to the giant subtype or size?

Spells that say 'Person' in the title probably won't affect you, though Giant is a type (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/typesSubtypes.htm#giantType), not a subtype in 3.5
