I am currently casually planning a campaign for the first DMing that I will do.
I was looking for an enemy who was moderately organized into a tribe or civilization, to allow for a bit of social intrigue, while still making the enemy an evil sort of force.
This seems to rule out goblinoids and orcs because they don't seem to have enough restraint or honor to hold them to agreements.
I stumbled upon the Derro who seem to be very interesting, and have a moderately organized social structure. However, they are CR 3, and I would plan on my heroes starting out with at least level 2.
How might I have my heroes combat more than one Derro without killing them? My ideas so far are to have them be already injured from previous combats, or to have them use sub-optimal weapons [it would be explained in the story]. Any other ideas?
