i'm looking for a program or list of programs that i can use to help me make maps for pretty much any RPG, though they need to be free, any suggestions?

I have used RPtools.net. It is a battle mat version of paint. I feel the learning curve can be a bit steep unless you know computers fairly well. RPtools can be used for big maps or for small battles on a digital grid. http://www.rptools.net/
