View Full Version : Long Live the Empress (IC)

The vineyards owned by House V'neef are calm and peaceful, much like the woman whose name the House bears. A group of Dragon-Blooded guards guide the four of you through the rows of grape vines, which are lush and heavy with fruit in the warm summer air.

At the end of one row, tending to the vines with a pair of pruning shears, is V'neef herself. She's a stunningly beautiful woman, who looks much younger than her 65 years. She has long red hair, and a soft, kind looking face. One could nearly mistake her for her mother, if not for the sheer difference in their demeanor. Where the Empress was hard and cold, V'neef is caring and gentle.

She puts down the shears and looks over as you draw near. "Hello, all of you. I hope the journey was pleasant." V'neef gets to her feet, brushing dirt from the knees of her robes.

"I had hoped that my sister and Tepet Ejava could see reason, and avoid this coming war, but it appears that I was wrong. Legionaries under Mnemon's command have begun attacking House Tepet's strongholds. Despite my neutrality in this conflict, House Tepet has long been an ally of my House. I'm asking you to send some humanitarian aid to those being harmed. Exalted and mortal alike. Especially those who cannot defend themselves."

She starts to pace up and down the rows. "Each of you was chosen for a reason. You represent a cross section of the Houses. If a team of Exalted, from both sides of the civil war, can be seen working together, to help those being displaced and injured... It can set an example that the rest of the Realm might follow. We could reach a peaceful end..."

A sad smile crosses her plump lips. "Do you have any questions?"

Kell_tamer

The small monk nervously raises her hand. "We aren't actually looking to cause bloodshed are we? I mean I really hope that wasn't why I was pulled from the cloister. I took a vow to protect the realm, and violence within seems highly antagonistic of that..." The passive child's hands rest upon her hammer, a weapon crafted with her might in mind. "Has diplomacy been tried? Or are we really just meant to be laid out like gulls and stags on a gateway board?"

Vayu suppresses the urge to roll his eyes. He's not wearing the mask after all. V'neef was the leader of a Great House, humble though she might be in appearance. "I have bad news for you, my dear. No target is off-limits in war. Mnemon's forces will kill any who provide aid to the enemy, the defenseless, the weak. I hope you know how to use that hammer, or this will be a very short mission indeed." He faces V'neef's ethereal outline in the winds. "Do you have a particular location for us to begin?"

A stern look crosses V'neef's face, though it passes in a moment. "Make no mistake, this mission will be dangerous. I cannot guarantee that you will not have to fight. However, I myself will be making every effort to negotiate with my sister and Tepet Ejava. I have already dispatched messengers to them, and am awaiting a response."

She relaxes visibly, and goes back to tending the vines. "To answer your question, Vayu, yes I do. Some of the hardest hit areas are those where both members of House Tepet and their allies hold sway. A Cynis stronghold on the southern coast was nearly razed to the ground. There were very few survivors, and those who remain face starvation and plague. It is also very possible that the city may become a Shadowland."

She frowns and pauses. "I should also tell you something else. I have a contingency plan, should any of you be captured. If all else fails, send word to me, and I will arrange for you to be adopted into my House. My neutrality should be enough to protect you, and merit your release."

Shooting a dirty glance at Vayu, Jin bows to V'neef. "I for one would greatly welcome a chance to help out with this. The fewer of us die, the better we can face the challenges of this time of tumult. And, on a personal matter, the deaths of my family members is especially galling. I thank you for the opportunity to demonstrate unity and aid the people."

"I would prefer not to have to renounce my name. I am quite fond of my personal estate. It would be a shame if I lost it to this squabble."
Isamu inclines his head just slightly in Jin's direction.
"My apologies for your loses, cousin. Hopefully we can prevent further savagery."

V'neef smiles briefly and sadly. "You're welcome, Jin. I know that those lives cannot be replaced, but I hope that you are able to take comfort in saving those you can." Her eyes flicker over to Isamu. "I understand, and accept that decision. Truth be told, it was an offer, not a command. If you would rather choose not to renounce your House, I will not force you to."

"A merchant ship will be waiting for you in the harbor, to take you and the supplies, as well as the other workers, to the site of the attack. Good luck, and I hope we see each other again."

She stands up, passes the shears to one of the workers, then begins walking towards her manor.

The guards who escorted you to her begin taking you towards the harbor.

Mountain sighs as she hefts the massive hammer effortlessly over her shoulder. She has never wanted to see the weapon used upon her brothers and sisters. It was supposed to protect the realm from the Anathema and beasts who would try to harm its people. Now it seems the Exalted have become those beasts. She hoped it wasn't the case, but she had trained for these kind of threats, and had ways of ending them without bloodshed.

"I hope this ends quickly and peacefully. This will only weaken the forces of those who were put here to protect this world..." She looks down as she plods her way over to the docks.

Jin follows the guards, some of the tension he's felt for the past several months lingering in his shoulders. "As you say. There are some terrible things out there..." His mind turns toward the north, and he shudders, pulling his jacket tighter around himself.

One of the guards' stony faces softens, and he turns to Little Mountain. "Don't be afraid. The Dragons watch over their monks." He smiles, trying to offer some encouragement. "You'll do great things, I'm sure."

They finish bringing you to the docks. Waves splash gently against the shore, the smell of salty air wafting over the four of you. The ships heave slightly with the tide, rocking in their slots at the docks. Sailors walk back and forth along the wooden piers, carrying loads of goods and supplies. Most of them ignore you as they walk past, some of them humming or singing sea shanties, or talking amongst themselves.

The guard who spoke earlier bows politely as you reach the ship slated to take you down the coast. "This is the Vine Maiden. She'll take you where you need to go."

The Vine Maiden isn't a large ship. It only has two decks, and a single mast bearing a large white sail. The ship's name is painted on the side in green letters, and the crew stands on the port side, lowering the gangplank for you to board.

Little Mountain nodded to the guard. She wasn't afraid of her own life being in danger. If she was to die she would die. She was Chosen and she would give her life protecting the world.

Upon getting on the boat she approached the mast and sat down before it. her hammer across her legs. She closed her eyes and went into a meditation upon what was to come. This was the calm before the storm. She would take advantage of it no matter how brief.

Once settled onto the boat, Jin reaches into his pack and pulls out his journal, brush, and ink. Settling into a corner, he begins to sketch anatomical drawings, planning his next invention...

As the four of you settle in, the crew of the Vine Maiden gets to work. They cast off, the small ship backing away from the pier and sailing out into the open ocean. The deck rocks gently with the waves, and ocean spray splashes over the deck. The sail catches the wind, billowing out as the merchant vessel hugs the coast, sailing off towards the Cynis stronghold.

The captain of the Vine Maiden strides out onto the deck. Her hair is short and blonde, and her bright blue eyes seem to pierce through you. She wears an Imperial Naval Officer's uniform, a dark blue coat, cream colored pants, and knee high black boots. A black Jade Wavecleaver Daiklave hangs from her hip.

"Listen up! There's a chance of hitting some bad weather up ahead. I'm going to need all hands on deck! I'd rather not see any of our crew, or supplies, go overboard if we hit a storm."

The corners of the captain's mouth twitch into a small smile. "Those ropes over there need to be secured. And the crates above deck need to be carried down below. Other than that, we just need to hunker down."

As the Vine Maiden sails down the coast, the sky begins to darken. The winds pick up, lashing at your faces, and whipping at the billowing sail. The distant sounds of thunder can be heard, and lightning flashes on the horizon.

"Damn. Looks like we're not avoiding this one without making port. And there aren't any viable harbors for hundreds of miles."

Jin rises to his feet, tucking away his journal. "This sort of work isn't really my forte," he says, setting too with securing items to the deck. He thinks to himself for a moment. Perhaps I could use a surgeon's knot, like for suturing. Yes, that seems secure...

"I hope we can ride this out without injury, but perhaps I should set up an infirmary in case of emergency, captain?" he calls, continuing to tie down lashings as he does.

The captain looks to Jin and nods. "Do it. And-" She pauses for a few moments. "Thank you." She strides off down the deck, shouting more orders and making sure that everything is done.

The work is done by the time the storm hits. The first few drops of rain start to fall. The heavy, fat drops make the deck slick and treacherous, and the small ship rocks with the waves crashing against the hull.

The captain braces herself, gritting her teeth in frustration. "Damn. It only gets worse from here. If this doesn't let up, we might capsize, and that's not a chance I'm willing to take." She calls over her shoulder to the navigator. "Are there any ports nearby that I don't know about?"

From inside the cabin, the navigator looks over the maps, his dark eyes taking in every detail. He shouts back, "There's Ember Island. It would only take a few hours to get there! And then a day from there to reach our destination."

The captain scowls, her brows furrowed. "That's Zhao's stronghold. I don't like the sound of that." She strides back down the deck, her hair plastered to her head from the rain, and comes over to you all. "Zhao isn't overtly hostile. If we don't make trouble, we might be able to weather the storm on his island. But it's a Shadowland, and we'd be hilariously outnumbered if he did decide to kill us all. Any thoughts?" She defers to you because, besides herself, you're the only Exalted on board, and V'neef herself but the four of you in charge of this operation.

The captain nods, and begins shouting orders again. The Vine Maiden turns, heading Southwest.

She looks over her shoulder to you and shouts, "I suggest you all head below deck! Things are about to get bad."

The storm rages, rocking the small ship, making it hard to stand. Below deck is cramped and dark, with all the off duty crewmen crammed into one small area. The smells of sweat and urine fill the air, and the members of the crew all seem nervous and afraid. Some have their heads bowed in prayer, others use what little space they have to pace back and forth, as if keeping themselves occupied will keep them safe.

"Spirits of Sea and Sky. The people of creation ask for your blessing on their journey. The Chosen beseech your aid. Lend this vessel the stability and speed to make it to Ember Island. Allow these men to see land tonight. Let these men and women reach their destination safely."

Caiden's face softens slightly, and the tension in his shoulders dissipates. He heaves a heavy sigh, and pinches the bridge of his nose between his thumb and index finger. "That was what I tried to tell Admiral Zhao. But he said you might still be an enemy using the storm as cover for an attack. No force this small could take the Island, of course. But a few well placed arrows or a single stroke of a sword could still end the Admiral's life."

The young Earth Aspect takes a few steps back. His deep basso voice still rumbles, though no longer unpleasantly. "While I'm convinced that you mean us no harm, my Lord will need to hear for himself. I'm afraid I'll have to ask you to come with me." He walks down the gangplank with his squad of soldiers, expecting you to follow. He exchanges words with one of his officers, who stations troops on the dock to guard the ship.

Beyond the soldiers on the docks, nothing seems to be out of the ordinary. Most of the ships are empty, their crews having secured them against the storm. Very few people are outdoors, and most of those who are aren't alive. A few zombies handle menial labor, unbothered by the rain. Ghosts meander through the streets, none of them paying you any particular mind.

"The Admiral is a stern man, but he's not cruel. He's ambitious and cares deeply for his people. He wants what's best for us, even if it means no longer being part of The Realm. Which is what brings Mnemon into the picture. Since House Peleps sided with the Roseblack, and V'neef is staying neutral, Mnemon has no naval support for her troops. She's looking to us for that, since the Admiral has so many ships. Plus, Necromancy would give her another advantage. Though he doesn't want to be involved in this war either. All he wants is for his House to endure." Caiden shrugs before continuing to lead you towards Zhao's manor.

Eventually, after walking the rest of the way in silence, Caiden brings you to Zhao's manor. The house is the largest and most impressive on the island, and has a long walkway lined with birch trees leading up to the front door. The white trees look nearly skeletal in the darkness. At the sight of your guide, the guards at the heavy oak front doors allow you inside. You pass into a wide vestibule, and Caiden leads you up a set of stairs to the second floor.

At the end of the hallway, he knock on a door. A gruff voice from within answers. "Enter." Caiden opens the door, and inside is Admiral Zhao.

He looks up as you enter, his face unreadable. Zhao sits at a desk of dark mahogany, and sets down the book we was reading. He wears a red naval uniform, tailored to perfection, giving him an appearance of dignity and grace. His dark brown hair is kept short, though he allows his sideburns to grow long and thick on the sides of his face. His green eyes glitter with cunning and intellect.

"So, you've brought them to me. No sign of treachery then, Caiden?"

The young soldier salutes and says, "Not that I could see, sir."

"I'll be the judge of that. You're dismissed."

Caiden nods, and exits the room. Zhao stands up from his desk, and walks over to the front. He sits on the edge, a small smirk on his face. "So, you expect me to believe your tale? That while the rest of the Empire is tearing itself apart, you just happen to be passing though?" He sighs. "Mnemon would come up with a better lie than that. So you weren't sent by her. And agents of Tepet Ejava wouldn't come on one of V'neef's merchant ships. I would have heard if she'd captured one. Which leaves a few options. Is V'neef wanting to join forces? We are both young and relatively weak Houses." It seems like the thought of simply offering humanitarian aid hasn't even crossed his mind.

Little mountain approaches and politely bows. The water from the rain has soaked into her dusty skin making it all but impossible to hide her elemental nature. The powerfully built child looks back up at their host. "Admiral Zhao, I am Tepet Lin, The Little Mountain. I wish to assure you that my friends and I are not here to cause problems for you and yours. We are in fact passing through to the site of one of the attacks from this war and wish to lend aid to the victims of the conflict, regardless of who's side they belong."

The girl holds her well muscled arms out to her side palms up. "A storm has hampered our journey and we wish shelter. While I am not an authority to make the decision whether we ally you with the house or not, I am willing as an Immaculte Monk to help your people should they need it. I understand you have your laws here and have no desire to infringe upon them. " A warm smile is upon the girls face. "Will you help us?"

Jin, somewhere along the walk, found that he had transitioned into his survival mode from his ordeal in the north. Though intrigued by the shadowlands and feeling it call to him, the presence of human corpses performing labor pulled too strongly at some of his old wounds, and the rumors that Zhao might be allied with a deathlord combined with the older dragonblood's suspicious attitude to evoke memories of the Master of Shattered Bones and his ever ready whip. Do not speak unless directed to. Do not show emotion. Fear brings reprisal, empathy brings destruction...

His face a blank mask, he forces himself to overcome his mounting trepidation. "It's a terrible cover story because it's not a cover story, admiral."

He sighs and gets to his feet, then starts to pace in front of his desk. "So you're sending aid to those affected by Mnemon's attacks? How noble of you." It's hard to tell if he's being sarcastic or not.

Mountain blinks a little taken aback by the generosity. "will it still have us be percieved as neutral? Forgive me but the Cloister did not teach as much about the ways of war as the House of Bells..." A small smile slips across Vayu's face. "Unfortunately, we're not likely to be perceived as neutral regardless of what we do. If the forces of House Mnemon stop us, it is likely they will be just as skeptical of our mission as Admiral Zhao, and with good reason. Even civilian vessels are often used to smuggle troops and armaments in wartime. In that case, I'd much rather have someone watching our backs. So long as our escorts adapt a defensive posture, there should be little trouble. At least, that's what I learned at the House of Bells." He offers a bow to Admiral Zhao.

"V'neef is wrong."

He draws his hands from his pockets, and fidgets with a large black coin. "There were almost no survivors, and as a result, nearly no one who died there received a proper funeral. The town's swarming with Hungry Ghosts, and unless I'm much mistaken, none of you are equipped to handle that."

Though she appears to be unarmed, she carries herself with the air of someone accustomed to violence.

The ghost frowns as he spots her. "Nisaku? Your father is sending you?"

The woman, the Necromancer, apparently named Zhao Nisaku, smiles. Her bright eyes twinkle with slightly malicious glee. "Now now, grandfather. No need to be so testy." Her smile turns into a smirk, and then fades as she looks away from the ghost.

"Don't mind Grandfather Lao Xian. He despises his station in death."

"That's Peleps Lao Xian to you, young lady!" Lao Xian scowls darkly. "Don't call me your grandfather. I stopped being a member of this family when my son renounced his House."

There's still that hint of malice in her eyes, and she stands near the prow of the ship as the captain casts off.

The Vine Maiden cuts through the waves quickly now that the storm is over. The hours pass uneventfully, until you all reach the Cynis stronghold. A makeshift dock has been set up over the ashes of the old harbor. A few ramshackle buildings have been set up, but the rest of the city is gone. The ruins stand from the ground like bones jutting out of flesh. On the outskirts of the razed city, the poppy fields were burned and salted. Bodies lie in the street, and no one is outdoors.

Once the captain eases the ship into a slot at the dock, the sun dips below the horizon. The moans of the unquiet dead can be heard rising from the ruins of the city. Nisaku's head perks up, that same gleam of violent glee back in her eyes. "Looks like we don't have to wait for our fight. The dead are coming to us."
