 Hi, and welcome to The Sticks Awards!

Note: Please wait for the poll. Read second post of this thread.

:smallamused: The Sticks Awards are given to the best strips of all times, chosen by the polls here in the Playground. Each poll will have a group of 10 comics, chronologically chosen, and every hundred strips we'll have a "Best of the Hundred" poll, with the most voted strip of each previous poll.

:smallcool: Each poll will have the duration of a week. Voters can only pick one choice. Links are provided for people to re-read the comics. This week's poll features comics #121 to #130.

:smallwink: If you have any suggestions or comments, feel free to comment on this thread.

 Thanks for voting!

Apparently, forum settings are different now. They allow only 5 options per poll.

I... don't know what to do. Just 5 comics would be too... few for a week. It will ruin all the setup of the awards (10 by 10 basis, then the 10 winners).

May I be so bold to ask the moderators to set the limit to 10 options?

That is rough, halfway throught your project. I second the motion.

I will second Nazzo's motion, since I really like what he's got going, and I'd hate for him to have to start over.

Bumped.

If that proves impossible to achieve, maybe you could run two polls simultaneously and ask people not to vote in both?

I'm thinking in alternatives. Like running the first half in the first 3 days, then the second half in the next 3 days and then we have a final one-day runoff between the two winners. Too complicated, yeah, but that's what we'll got if the limit on the number of poll options do not raise to 10.

See, this is another argument to raise the limit. We'll have 3 threads instead of one because of this limit. But that's just me, I guess.

It's a more of a pain, but you could just have people post their vote as responses to the thread -- it loses anonymity, but does that matter?

One way to do it is to post two polls, each containing all 10 links in the body of the poll message, and 5 choices in the poll options. Then cross-link the two polls, write in big red letters "Only vote in one of the polls" and make voting results public to catch double-voters. Heck of a lot of work, though.

Tough luck! I like the stick awards...
Hmm... maybe the easiest solution would be to make 2 polls with 5 choices each running simulaniously and then pick the 3 comics that get the highest votes from both.
Sure it would skew the results, but as every one can vote twice then it would be sort of okay... I don't think you can get people to only vote on one thread. Even if they are sympathetic, they would vote accidentely on both threads before realizing the situation.

Most people post their choices anyways. It will lower the total number of votes however.

Also, doing 5 at a time might actually change the total outcome.

It's hard to explain, but trying to put it simply, the number of votes towards 'second favorites' within the ten, because they cannot vote for their favorites since they are in the second half, could change the original outcome. Or something like that.

That's right. It would also favour comics that are not in a 'package' with a sure favourite.
On the other hand, the results were never this comparable, as they depended on how many people happen to check the forums in any give week... To keep the awards running at all, I'd go with two polls, just because it's the easiest way (one 5-option-poll per week would be too slow and 2 5-options polls, each lasting only 3 days or so would give people to little time to react)

I suggest asking admin for change of settings. I cant see reason for such a restriction anyway.

I would like to see the limit set back to 10 (at least for the stick awards).

Barring that... How about 4 polls of 5 each one week and then the next week have 2 polls of 2 using the winners?

For example, the first week would have polls for 121-125, 126-130, 131-135, and 136-140. The next week have winners of 121-125 vs. 126-130 and 131-135 vs. 136-140. This would keep the same pace and be "compatible" with the previous results. Of course it would be more of a pain and result in more polls to manage.

Alright, guys. Thank you all for the suggestions. I think I'll stick with the two simultaneous 5-option polls. Then I pick the two winners and do a run-off somehow, because the point is the discover only the best one in that given set of 10 comics.

Hopefully, just for this week. Maybe next week we have the limit raised to 10.

Oh my... We have a new problem. The options are limited to 25 chars max. I can't put a link on an option, as the url characters count towards this limit. Actually I can't even put the comic title on the option. "#121: The Return of Mail Call" ir more than 25 chars...

That's rough. If it matters, I'd be willing to vote for you to have special poll-making priveleges above what everyone else can have!

If you do the two-5-choice-simultaneous polls, instead of having a run-off vote, I say just leave a message for people to only vote in one of the two polls for the week. Much better statistics.

Thank you, Draz, but I don't think the forum software is capable to give these poll-making privileges.

Guess I'll wait a little more to see where this goes. After all, the worst that can happen is that we take a week off of voting. :smallwink:

For what it's worth, you have my support in getting your poll up and running again.

I support this........ I really hoped to find out what everyone votes for as the best strip yet.
Sucks....... I hope they go back to how it was before.....
Oh, and...... 5 OPTIONS???? ONLY????? I mean, the OOTS is a group of 6, what bout polls concerning them??? totally sucks......

Wow. I guess the mods got as tired of the ubiquitous polls as other forum members. 5 choices with 25 characters for each choice is pretty harsh though.

One suggestion to get around the 25 characters thing would be to just put the comic number and part of the title in the actual post choice, and then links to those comics in the first post of the thread.

I also hope that you guys are PMing the mods and not just hoping that they read this thread.

Yes, yes. I did it. And posted a message in this thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33758) over the Board/Site Issues forum.

I hope they read it.

Still nothing. Well. Guess I'll have to live with it. I'll add the poll next week. Two simultaneous polls, whoever gets more votes in both is in. Cool?

Well, you could always just set up an external poll. I'm pretty sure there are a number of free polling services out there. This one (http://www.coolwebpoll.com/), for example.
