The third elf wizard racial sub. level from Races of the Wild gives the 'natural link' ability. With it, "the bonus on skill checks, saves, or hit points granted by the familiar doubles."
1) Using this with a hummingbird familiar (Dragon Mag 323) to gain +8 to initiative wouldn't work, would it? Initiative isn't a skill check, save, or repository of hit points, so the +4 bonus won't be doubled, right?
2) Could this be combined with Item Familiars (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/magic/itemFamiliars.htm) to gain preposterously large bonuses to skill checks?
