View Full Version : A Dragons Will, and the reading thereof.

Once upon a time, a fair while ago, in a land rather far from ours, a great Dragon, called and known as Tsardendalos died. His armor was like tenfold shields, his teeth were swords, his claws spears, the shock of his tail was a thunderbolt, his wings a hurricane, yes, I suppose his breath was death.
All of these things, however impressive they might have sounded on paper, did not change the fact that 'Dalos, (as his.... acquaintances-who-weren't-enemies called him), had grown old, and, as all things do, eventually died. For so comes snow after fire, and even dragons have their endings.
Now, here arose the problem.
Tsardendalos had been extremely long lived, even for a Dragon. He was hale and hearty when his relatives and friends were entering their twilight, and indeed, when he reached that stage of his long life, he remained in it for a good 2000 years.
And when he finally did die, 'Dalos left behind a hoard larger then most.
He was known for his traveling, and always managed to bring back a few precious oddities to increase his wealth.
Now, Dragons being Dragons, all of his relatives, no matter how distant, were eager to come to the reading of the will, hoping in their deep, Draconic hearts that perhaps 'Dalos hadn't hated them Quite as much as he let on.
Dragons of all shapes and sizes, a few of the more intelligent drakes, kobolds by the dozen, and even some sorcerers claiming to have been distantly related traveled far and wide, till they reached the vast cave mouth of the late Dragons home.
Mixed in behind them, and above, and between and around them, stood and fluttered six half dragons.
They had been dragged along, or bribed, or lost their way, or came of their own accord, and now they waited in the huge line of Dragon-ish folk, and waited for their turn to enter the cave.

Rorick shook his head a bit at the gathering, the big man leaning a bit on the haft of his weapon, twitching his wings abit to get more comfortable. He ran a hand through his dark red hair, silver eyes swiveling back and forth between and among the rather varied gathering.

He was hear because Lucilia had gotten wind of the matter, and reasoned that he may as well go and find out if he was, in fact, related to this particular dragon, on the off chance he might be left something of value. And Rorick was pragmatic enough not to turn down money for the cost of a relatively short and uneventful trip in between jobs and personal tasks, so he took that suggestion, which was how the lightly armored man with a mix of human and ebon dragon features came to stand in this line.

He wasn't someone who struggled to keep still, but he didn't enjoy it, and since he had time to kill it seemed, he opened his mouth, smiling and generally friendly, his usual manner for light conversation.

"So, where do you hail from?"

Not my greatest intro but I had limited time to put it up. Whomever wants to reply to that first can take it as being directed at them.

Whisp (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=827198) mostly came here to socialize with his peers.

He purses his lips after getting settled into his place in the crowd (hovering at least 10' above the ground if acceptable), and slowly exhales a mist in a rainbow progression (plus magenta) of colors followed by a large amount of sky blue. He glances around to make sure nobody is strongly objecting to this, and then forms the rainbow portions into a large loop and a small loop, both joined from red to violet by the magenta. He bows his head and manipulates the smaller fog band as if with his fingers*, meanwhile, above and behind him, a giant duplicate of his hands, made of the

*Despite the fact that the fog can't actually interact with his hands any more than any other gas can be moved by hands... and less so since this is magically self-stabilizing to a degree, so he is actually telekinetically manipulating it to make it LOOK like his fingers are interacting with it.

Using one of my 3 daily breath weapon uses.
Social Rolls to avoid getting in trouble for using his breath weapon.

Generic Wisdom to know social standards for such an occasion if they weren't mentioned (or use below diplomacy roll). [roll0]
Sense Motive to judge initial reactions. [roll1]0
Diplomacy to ask either permission or forgiveness (unless we are going to RP either, in which case we will use a roll AFTER the roleplaying) [roll2]

Craft[Sky-Painting] [roll3] (probably a reasonably high difficulty to this trick... which maybe cancels out because it is that much more impressive to the degree I pull it off).
Generic Dexterity to keep fingers in-sync with smaller loop [roll4]

Pedro (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=828707) was not sure why he had come here. He supposed that the wealth offered might be of some use to him, but he doubted it greatly. Perhaps he was here to see if anyone else made the realisation he had made.

But no, he was here for a simpler reason; he wanted to be. Fulfilling your desires was, after all, the key to eradicating them, was it not? Thinking on this a moment longer, he looked up, and sighed. Right now, he didn't even know what to do next. So, he did what he always did.

Nothing.

Fuegan pushed his way past a gaggle of kobolds, nodding to them as he passed by. The crowd of dragons and dragon-kind was the largest he had ever seen and it filled him with pride to behold such a gathering of mighty creatures, though the presence of mere mortals, albeit ones who claimed distant draconic lineage, irritated him beyond measure. Looking around he saw dragons, drakes and kobolds of all shapes, colours and sizes, though few of his own kind.

The possibility of adding to his own meager hoard as a result of the day was a possibility in his mind, but even more this was about the chance to pay homage to one of the oldest dragons that had ever lived.

Dusan stares at the crowd around him, keeping a somewhat forced grin as he maneuvers his way forwards. Sure, he had reasons to be here, wealth was never a bad thing, and it was always possible he could make some connections... But was it worth it? He remembered tails of draconic politics from his father, and shivered slightly. Everyone was nice and polite now, but it was in the air: the moment someone powerful enough was displeased by their lot, this whole place could go straight to hell...

Still, it was rather fun, wasn't it? The sights, the sounds, the constant stink of sulfur...

My half-Copper, who really needs a cute Elven name, catches sight of the sky painting. She had only come because she'd heard rumours there would be partying and merriness (is that a word) afterwards, but she, unlike some others, really couldn't stay still for the time necessary to get to the end. Wondering just exactly what the sky painter was and how he was making such pretty, colorful things, she stretched out her wings and took a running leap up and towards him, four lumps of knitted... something whizzing rapidly about her head.

"Hi! That's, like, totally groovy. I mean, umm. Thou art... Groovy-eth?" She says, flying around him. [Diplomacy:1d20+0=18] She smiles confidently as if she actually said something acceptably formal, trying not to wince at her own butchered speech. Why did she spend so long training her stealth and not a single day learning formal speech? The world may never know.

Whisp manages to restrain his recklessness enough to not push his luck by trying to maintain the motions while talking... barely.

"Why thank you! Just doing my non-so-humble best to keep people entertained while we are waiting. Quite a crowd. Too bad I can't pass a hat for various reasons..."

Socksy
2014-04-09, 01:36 PM
She zooms about him, swirling and flipping [Tumble:1d20+8=27] in midair, mouth going at great speed.
"Is it because you forgot your hat? I think I have one somewhere! My mother was worried about sunburn, so she packed one in my bag for me! Hats are pretty cool, actually, I used to have one made out of a stuffed bear's head! And another one which glowed in the dark! I totally wanted to be a sorcerer, then I could make the one my mother gave me change colours and flash and glow blue when Orcs are near, like in... Um... That one trilogy that's a sequel to that other thing, what's it called, something about a halfling! I totally want a Ring of Invisibility! Just one which isn't a lich's phyl-" She claps her hands over her mouth. "Never mind! Forget I said that! Spoilers!"

DracoDei

"No, it is just that I don't think busking is acceptable in what is technically a gathering for a solomn legal purpose. Plus... well, I rather suspect that most of those present here vary from 'frugal' to outright 'miserly' with their coin." replies Whisp, easily keeping up with the speed of speech since it was actually fairly common in his family.

"Oh. Well, I still think hats are cool. Here, I think..." She lands underneath him and pulls her bag off her shoulders, rummaging. "Yes! Here it is!"

A hat is retrieved, and it's obvious it was homemade, dropped stitches everywhere, with a large leather brim poorly attached with magic to the rest of the beanie-type design.

"It's so cool! It's like a soft knitted hat and a formal hat at the same time! My mother made it specially for me, and sometimes it giggles and tries to lick me, but my father said that's a mishap and I really should be more careful when I'm trying to work on enchanting items! Well, not enchanting, I can't do magic! Psi-chanting? No, that just makes it sound like regular chanting but done by a Psion! Aaanyway, I tried to make it augment my psionics when I wear it, but I had no idea how to do that, so now it just makes weird noises and licks people instead of actually being enhanced. It tickles actually! Want to try it on?"

DracoDei

"...Well, I made a hat which licked people. But mostly, I use my powers to get places fast, and make stuff blow up! I lead caravans through the Astral Plane sometimes, and it's so amazing. Sometimes there are pirates! Knights on flying carpets! Githyanki detecting psionics to try to kill illithids! And portals that are all glowy and can easily cause people to wind up on Mechanus and totally NOT switch two of the really tiny gears about to see what'll happen!" She is, of course, referring to smaller, almost decorative gears, and not anything large or important.

Well, maybe he should have seen it coming form a large gathering of people who were or were descended from dragons, but truth be told, Rorick was surprised by and unused too being more or less ignored when he tried to be chatty. And it would have been one thing if everyone was such, but others were getting to there own conversations and activities as the waiting ensued, so, this was actually fairly baffling to him.

Would this crowd never move? This was starting to look like a complete waste of... The hell was that? Who was doing sky painting? Dusan, leaps into the air and begins approaching the apparent origin of the strange artwork, Listening with steadily growing confusion to the voices issuing from it. A hat? Why was a hat so important... Wait, it was licking people? Stranger and stranger. He lands quietly near the group and walks towards them "The hat did what now? Illithid sky pirates? Gear shifting githyanki? Someones been living an interesting life!"

He squealed like a little girl because, because its tongue went in his, his, his ear!!" She laughs loudly as she gets to the end of her short tale, barely able to complete it.

The hat isn't poisonous or anything, nor is it sentient in any way. It's just a failed attempt at making a Psionic item.

Old Dalos? Hardly!

Pedro smiled slightly. "First, I know how to protect myself from weapons, thank you. Second, Prestidigitation."

Four small coins appeared in Pedro's hand - obvious fakes, indeed not even meant to look like real coins, but good enough for target practice - and he drew a sword in his other hand, threw the coins in to the sky, and drew his second sword in the other hand.

Full attack against the coins. Fine inanimate objects have an AC of 8, meaning that Pedro only misses on a 1:

[roll0]

Pedro whirled his swords in front of him, smashing all four coins, before sheathing his weapons. "And third, there's a limit to how skilled one can be. Let's see how good you are with your bow, youngling."

I just realised that Pedro is 1 ft 7 taller then Morwenna.

Also, in this post Pedro references a game I just made up on the spot, but I'm assuming that it's a common enough game that Morwenna would know what he's on about.

"If you believe that there is even the slightest chance that you could miss, then you have failed before you even step onto the battlefield. The slightest chance that you could miss... the slightest chance that you could be hit... is the slightest chance that you could die. Only when there is No Escape from your attacks, and No Failure when you attempt another task can you win every battle.

There are limits, but these are only the same as the limits of a game. You cannot move your soldiers onto the mountain in the game of Siege, but there is nothing to stop you picking up the piece and putting it on the mountain tile." Pedro paused, and took out a downsized Siege board, then, sure enough, picked up the red soldier and put it on the mountain tile.

"People are too busy playing the game of life by its rules to realise that these rules have no value. Just as the cheater will always win at Siege, so do those who ignore the rules of the great game we all play win every time.

So don't ask what might happen if you miss. Don't miss. Don't get hit. And don't die."

Socksy
2014-05-17, 06:10 PM
"You're telling me to cheat? I could cheat any way I liked, but I don't wanna! That ruins the entire thing and anyway, nobody dies if you mess up your board game! What if I shot my arrow at your coins and someone pushed someone else in front of it, or a sudden wind came, or, um, or a demon possessed the arrow! There are so many possibilities which don't involve my accuracy, and I'm not gonna risk anyone's life shooting arrows in a crowd!"
She scowls up at him. Very far up at him.
"Hey, has anyone ever told you you're, like, really freaking tall? If you were a supervillain you would be Puts-Things-On-The-Top-Shelf Man! The bane of short people everywhere! Although I can fly, and you have wings too, so I guess that would be a really dumb alter ego for you to have. Maybe something to do with stretching long distances..."
She tried to change the topic subtly, but is now distracted with thoughts of superheroes and villains. She then turns to the others.
"What do you think he'd be if he had superpowers?"

Really hope the superhero genre exists in this, though I fail to see why it wouldn't.

"Funny enough, I'm with her. Too crowded an area for ranged attacks. And besides, that's the sort of thing even if you don't hit someone that's liable to set someone off who's concerned or perhaps just in a foul temper and looking for someone to take it out on. So, I'm advising against it as a bad idea. Do it later when there's more room and fewer people and beings that can wipe the lot of us out by thinking about it."

With this the rather large half black dragon turned his head to Fuegan, raising and eyebrow and giving him a look of examination for a second before speaking.

"I don't know how powerful a magic user you are or aren't, but the none dragon sorcerer's alone by there number and varied caliber could almost certainly take you as a group, even if they took casualty's doing so. And if you don't happen to be an astoundingly powerful mage as mages go, I'd not underestimate the Kobolts in groups this large, you'd be amazed what a nightmare dealing with them can be, and how lethal. Not to mention that I'm sure if we started shoving up further in the line the Blue's, Green's, Bronze's, Slivers and Golds would take Issue with it on principle more then they wouldn't, and I'd rather like to not get torn apart, fried, frozen or dissolved today. So, I'd advise patience. If your inclined to ignore that suggestion that's fine with me, but do have the curtisy to let me make a sign that says I'm not with you first if you decide to do so, thus allowing me to avoid being associated with any of the things I just listed happening if you act and it goes poorly as I fear it would."

It was a very clam, dry delivery, the sort that indicated that you were just thinking it over out load and would prefer all involved not do something to cause themselves trouble or harm, but that you didn't precisely have a plan to fight the entire crowed to save them if they started something and it became an issue.

Don't forget, he doesn't know his mother is also descended of dragons, but that doesn't mean the dragon(s) don't. And she's of Copper Dragon Heritage if that matters.

"Well that's less formal then I imagined. My father is Ulhamangkar, a bronze dragon sworn to the service of Bahamut. My mother is a nymph that goes by Nyoimaer of the Nuadubinn, a member of one of the West's Seasonal Courts." Yeah. Totally not related.

Mangkar.... Mangkar....
The voice is doubtful, and you hear the rustling of paper in the background.
Not related, but the names familiar...
Oh! Mangkar! That guy who was all preachy in my face all the time! What a jackass...

Pedro responds next, gruffly and a little boredly. "My father was a gold dragon known as Gura, or Flame to humans. My mother was the sorceress Katerin Diablo, called Ka'Kitaki by the dragons."

Oh, believe me, I remember Ka'Kitaki....
I remember her very well...

"My dad's called Vortigern and he's a huge, powerful Copper dragon! Entire arrows bounce off him and he can turn lead into gold! My mum's- Well, I have two! Like, not at the same time, but the woman who gave birth to me I don't know much about. Apparently she was an elf woman called... Anastrianna, I think. Dad gets sad when he talks about her so I never asked much."

Quite the enthusiastic one, aren't you. Can't say I've heard of your dad, but your mums a cousin somehow...

"My mother is Sherril, whose maternal grand-mother is Varnesceto the silver Dragon. My father is Fraasitindbaosiwhe, called Tornado. I am Whisp, and I was a better flier at twelve years old than most half-dragons ever are at any time in their life. I make no particular claim to be a relative although I'm willing to be pleasantly surprised!" he says, allowing his minor boast to stand in place of explicitly stating his father's race.

Hmmmm... Bad form, kiddo, bragging in front of the deceased.
Gotta learn some manners, artistic types never have any..

"I do not know my father. He courted my mother under a face and name he, as near as I or she have been able to tell, crafted for that soul purpose, and he left her right after siring me. The name he used is Malcior of Node, master of the Arcane Arts, and he was apparently a Black Dragon if that helps.

My Mother is Arlana Long-Halft. The Scarlet Wall, if that happens to be relevant."

Malcior of Node... That sunnuva bitch!
I lost a couple million to that worm!

"I am Fuegan, my father is the red dragon Elrindor the Wanderer, my mother was a human called Anne."

Huh. Never heard of either. Well kids, here's my verdict.
Your parents are of questionable character in my opinion, and some of them I just don't like.
You all seem uppity and irritating, but I've got a soft spot for youth.
Butler?

The red dragon-man wakes up, jolting upright and cracking his neck violently.

give the kids a snow-globe.

The butler grins, digging through the pockets of his coat carefully, trying his best not to rip holes in the fabric.
What d'ya say, kiddies?
He smirks, handing over a small snow globe, grasped delicately between two claws.

"Thank you. I suppose we should get this assayed and then discuss who, if anyone, wishes to buy out everyone else's shares?" asks Whisp, very carefully taking the toy (more careful of breaking an item with such thorny current ownership etc than of the butler's claws per se).

That got and eye raised by Rorick.

"Note to self, check in with more dragons to track him down once I've attended to the more pressing matters." He thought before turning his attention back to matter at hand.

"I'd be amiable to that plan provided the item isn't trapped or cursed or otherwise intended to give us unpleasant surprises. After all, you have mentioned not liking some of our parents so it doesn't hurt to be cautious.

Nope. Nuh-uh. No way. Not touching that. But that doesn't stop her from peering at the little globe in Whisp's grip.
"Are you going to shake it?"

DracoDei

"Well, actually, maybe I better wait on the shaking until I know if that would do anything." says Whisp, wondering if Rorick might have something of a point.

"Dear child, why so suspicious? Of course the snowglobe isn't dangerous. It's entirely non-magical!"

The last few syllables fade into the humid air of the foyer, sinking into nothing.
Around the globe, a little spark of static electricity jumps from somewhere unknown, races around each of the draconic figures, and finally zaps the snowglobe.
The fake snow inside stirs, and as it clears, you believe you can see something through it.
A... billiards table, perhaps...?
"Was, entirely non magical, anyway"
Your former host murmers, but already everything seems distant.
Dreamlike. Sensation is milder, sounds and sights out of sync.
You could almost fall asleep like this...
But no. Something immensely heavy slams into you, brutally crushing every part of your scaly body.
You are pressed against some invisible wall, and if your eyeballs weren't so busy being squished against their sockets they would realize that beyond that wall lay a billiards table, floating in space.

The wall breaks, slowly, agonizingly.
You stumble into void, a disturbing lack of anything supporting your feet as well as a floor would. Ahead of you, in all it's pub-room glory, lies a billards table, glistening softly in the light of the stars overhead.

Chapter 1.
In which a friendly game of Billards commences, and planar travel is abused.

Rorick glanced at the display, raising an eye brow at it. "I'd suggest not doing that until you have a proper target. Waste of time, energy, and if you have a shot limit, shots. As for what this is about, did it occur to no one after he started talking about issues with our parents that he might have something less then ideal to hand to us?

And toward that end, I'll repeat myself. Does anyone have the foggiest idea where we are?"

DracoDei
2014-09-10, 05:19 PM
Whisp reaches out with his innate magic, feeling if, by some phenomenal luck, his fog is still with him in its transparent state.

(If not he will expend the second of his three daily shots of his breathweapon.)

Soon he is hovering in place a little ways off from everyone, at a random location within a sphere of absolute darkness about 17 feet in diameter.

"I'd avoid messing with the table until we are sure there are not any innocents still contained within the balls." he says, and then moves his location within the sphere. Everyone else is at least 5 feet outside the sphere.

The sphere is mechanically a 3x3x3 cube if we are doing a battlemap, just because a sphere is nicer looking and perhaps even more sensible before one starts bringing mechanics into it, but trying to represent a (27 cube)*(125 cubic feet per 5' cube) volume sphere on the standard battlemap would be a royal pain.

Needs Blindsight/Blindsense to penetrate it visually. Darkvision doesn't help. It isn't a [Darkness] effect, it is just REALLY black fog.
My front back position (with towards the table being 1 and furthest from it being 3) is... well, you can roll a d3 for that and the other two axis when and if it becomes relevant.
Move Silently to change hovering position without being detected as to the new position. [roll0]

Question: Do I actually need to flap to float in one place here?

"Well, that was entirely in keeping with what I know of them," muttered Pedro, entirely unhurt but entirely unamused. "So, would anyone like to explain what exactly the purpose is of firing at nothing, or of creating a sphere of darkness and floating within it for no apparent reason? Or shall I just attempt to do something of some vague value on my own?"

"Its my breath-weapon. It sticks around until I misplace it. Doesn't do anything nastier than look really dark. I can see through it just fine.

We've just been transported to a strange place for unknown reasons. I'm hardly about to go attacking the first creature we meet, but I'm keeping my defenses up just in case."

"Um, does anyone have any pebbles on them at all? Cause if we're on the material plane still then I could take us all to the Astral plane and then get us back home. Probably."
"If you might need such a thing, I'd have expected you to carry it. Would the flint I normally use to light fires, a copper piece, some water, or a small piece of wood do?"

"The material plane is far more likely than anywhere else," mused Pedro, in Rorick's vague direction, now choosing to ignore Whisp's airborne capers, "Because it's far easier to move people about on this plane than into other planes, and while I don't doubt that the dragon could do it, I don't see why he'd waste one of his most powerful spells on it. I'm not even sure there are any spells that can just up and shunt someone onto another plane, from a distance, without their say-so, and while I'm sure a wizard could research a spell that did that, why would they waste their signature spell on what is essentially a refined form of being a jerk?"
