Well, the question is simple: What do you think will happen with Haley?

Will she don...

I'm guessing long pants, particularly in the middle of an oceanic storm.

If the Order is going north, could they pick up cold-weather gear? If so, could Haley get a coat like the one she has on the wallpaper that shows the Order fighting an animated snowman?

I'm hoping for hot pants simply so we can see them before she changes into warmer clothing for the trip north.

The question is: Endure Elements will be involved?

(BTW: i like the short pants version)

She's not wearing that outfit anymore anyways. But when she did, she removes it at one point in Origins of PCs and it's shown how long it is. I won't spoil it for those who want to keep the surprise.

Her old outfit has long pants; the desert one does not (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0675.html), though it's unclear if they're half-pants or full-out shorts. I have no idea which one she'll stick with to go up north - her older one would seem more appropriate weatherwise, but her newer one matches her boots and probably has higher stats.

If shes going into the truly cold regions of the planet (IE the OOTS version of Alaska or Russia) I think she'll just wear some heavy clothes over her newer magical armor.

That is what she did on one of the recent wallpapers (https://s3.amazonaws.com/GiantInThePlayground_Wallpapers/WinterWallpaper_1920x1440.png), so you may be right.

The shirt under her armor is definitely new for the airship, as it doesn't match her previous look, which had clearly exposed shoulders and underarms.

I like it. The new designs all look great.

the suit of armor is new too, unless its the desert armor she had and the lighting simply makes it seem a different color.

Not without hot pants, he doesn! :smallyuk:

Seriously though, with such a simple style, people can project whatever appearance they want onto the characters. What he or she finds attractive, if anything, would be the picture made in their mind for Haley, not the stick figure itself, I assume.

I'm not judging so much as being intensely curious -- I don't find anything necessarily repugnant in the notion, just genuinely surprising and it's hard to tell the difference between snark and sincerity in our post-modern society.

If by attractive you mean intensely hot, yes, I personally do. Haley is hot.
Primarily because having known her for 10 years, feels like I've been dating her, and she has a great personality. Thus, being in love with her personality, I find her body attractive, even if it's stick figure. In Origin of PCs, there's a fan service page with Haley taking a bath. I'm sure I'm not the only one who appreciated it.

Also, in my case, there is a kind of a mental substitution. I have a hot girl player in our DnD campaign, so I substitute Haley's body with hers. As for face, I imagine young Gwynneth Paltrow or Rose Leslie.

It's disturbing that even though she is a stick figure, some men here seem to prefer her to be a ridiculous sex object than a plausible character. :smalleek:

I figured it was supposed to be a more detailed version of what she had originally, only with a full shirt underneath. Otherwise, where did she get it from?

:smallconfused: Being sexually attracted to a woman does not mean treating her as a ridiculous sex object. It can be combined with liking her character. In my case, it stems from it.

There's nothing disturbing or strange about it. Reading in itself is a process of activating imagination. Otherwise romance novels would never sell.

Huh. Well...

That is interesting.

I will say the substitution of a real life person makes this kind of squicky and uncomfortable for me, and in any event am glad that Mr. Burlew gave her sensible clothes.

No, but being angry at the author and calling him evil for giving her long pants is petty ridiculous. Although Dolan might have been just joking.

Second. Stick or no, Haley is intended as a "hot" character, if you recall. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0035.html) Yes, that's back in the old days, but even then Haley was more than a sex object.

What we need is to hear from girl readers what they think Elan looks like.

No, but I do find something strange and vaguely creepy about overly sexualising a stick figure character by replacing her body with the body of a 'hot girl player' you know and her face with some celebrity and saying you feel like you've been dating her.

If you remove the "creepy" elements, it's not too different from saying "When I read Harry Dresden, in my head his voice sounds like George Clooney's" or the like. It's not weird in principle.

Im not sure its that either. The lighting is a bit odd, but its pretty dark colored to be the desert armor.

But then the question is, where did it come from if it's not what she's been wearing? The undershirt can be explained. But suddenly having new magical leather armor while flying full speed across the ocean is a bit unlikely.

I don't know. However, I feel this is a far more pressing issue than that vampire thing last comic.

http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0339.html might give more detail.

I don't know if I'd describe Haley as 'hot', but I'd agree that she strikes this male as a sexy character, mainly because of how she acts wrt Elan, i.e. personality/ character stuff, unrelated to the distraction bonus to AC that her desert armour provides.

Edit: strange, I'd always imagined Elan's Dashing Swordsman top to be a jacket rather than a waistcoat. Just about the first thing that's made me go "that looks odd" with the new art.

I don't care for the new art style, and I think I now know why. I think it's similar to the uncanny valley effect in animation. It has slipped over some sort of boundary in how I interpret it between "deliberately simplified" and "this guy can't draw" - that is despite being technically more detailed, it "feels" like a less capable artist is drawing it.

All he did was thicken the limbs and add a few more details! How is it that different?

I suspect the people who are having some trouble with it would have less problem if the comic had always been this way. It's switching from one to the other that makes it jarring. I believe if he had started with actual stick figure, a la XKCD, then switched to his original style, people would have similar concerns about it being too realistic and uncanny valley.

It's not a matter of logic, it's a matter of perception; just like a person with a scale-breaking IQ and ten PHDs would come off as backwards and dumb to some people if said smart person spoke with certain accents. It's not true, it's just knee-jerk reactions coming from a mix of past experiences and stereotypes.

Oh please, if I got on every female reader's butt for reading Chronicles of Amber and imagining Sean Connery as King Oberon, I'd call every one of them creepy.
In my head I have a specific idea what each character looks and sounds like if this was a movie.

But I feel like I'm being defensive over a point I'm not even making. I'm not overly sexualizing Haley, nor am I describing 5 pages of what her and I do would do in a locked room. I simply stated that to me she is intensely hot, primarily because I like her personality. I.e. if Haley existed in real life, and I were single, I would take steps to date her.

Plus, for the good first half of the comic, she had a lot of insecurities, and was timid in matters of intimacy. And I do like my timid.

In all honesty; would you find it more offensive that he has a fondness for a stickfigure character with ten years worth of characterization, whose looks have never been concretely defined beyond the obvious red hair and leather armor, or for a random airhead with the Most Common Superpower (great boobs, of course) and no depth beyond 'love interest?' Presumably some men would enjoy reading about interesting female characters for much the same reason women read romance novels (of the non-or-less-sleazy variety).

That said, leather hotpants are somewhat overrated. Here's hoping for something with a hood and fur, especially if they really are going north. Sufficiently roguish parka ought to make those sneak attacks look really cool.
