Acquired Templates Question

I've never really messed with templates, so this has me a little confused. Does the +LA from an acquired template mean that I have to gain the equivalent experience of the ECL -> ECL + 1 to gain one level? In other words, if I got a +2LA template at 10th level, would I have to gain the same experience to get to 11 that a 12th level character would need to get to 13?

That's almost right. If my ECL is 13, despite only having 11 class levels, then I will gain XP as if I were a 13 level character, and would be calculated as such in CR and EL stuff. I would then need the XP of a 13-level character to gain my next level.

LA basically makes you count as a higher level character for all XP purposes.
