The skeletons grin and lash out with both of their claws at Fruril and Gundwolfe. Though most of the attacks miss, two skeletal hands pull back with fresh blood dripping off them. Kristoph stands still as the stirges attach themselves to him and begin to drink his blood. Aurora, seeing this horror, attempts to wake him up with a spell, but it is of no use. Seeing his chance, Fruril escapes with the unconscious Elian. Leaving enough room for Gundwolfe to move in and smashes a stirge off of Kristoph.

As Aurora stands in the doorway, she feels the melody start to surround her, but with a shake of her head she shakes it off. Suddenly, she tilts her head as if she is listening to something.

You hear what you recognize as the Professor's Voice

Aurora moves quickly to Gundwolfe's side, not noticing Fruril's fall, but instead a white glow surrounds her hand as she heals the half-orc barbarian.

Kristoph, seeing his companion fall, steps over his companions body and smashes the head off of one of the skeletons. Holding his shield up, it is clear that the paladin means to protect his companions to his last breath.

The cuts are jagged and long, with bits of bone showing at their deepest points. Thunder crashes from the south, causing Kendra to jump from fright.

I know very little about healing, perhaps you could bandage him up while I assist you? she says to Aurora and Elian. Nodding at Aurora's agreement, she leaves the room and comes back with long wide bandages and a bottle of what looks like water.

I've seen farmers do this to their cuts, its a bottle of spirits that disinfects the wounds. Pouring the liquid onto a rag, the three work together to clean up the wounds before wrapping him up. His weight proves to be an issue, but eventually everything is covered.

I will get to making some food, he will need it after the priest heals him. she says before disappearing into the kitchen. Soon the sounds of chopping and the smell of onions and garlic fill the house.

Your research only reveals more of the same.

As you shamble through town, a storm begins to roll in from the south. The crack of lightning is accompanied by almost immediate thunder. It has not yet begun to rain when you get to the temple.

As you move inside there seems to be a hustle and bustle of activity. Acolytes and priests are moving about, covering windows and bringing in items that are outside. You see Chad's shining bald forehead in the crowd and approach him. His deep voice bellows as he sees you.

My friends! You look a little worse for the wear, what happened?! Chad listens intently as Kristoph explains what happened. Hah, you are crazier, or braver, than I thought. I can help you, but first I must inform Father Grimburrow where I will be going. waving his hand behind him as you can see, things are quite busy right now. A storm is coming in, and it looks like it will be most unpleasant. Meet me at the entrance in five minutes.

Chad disappears into the crowd. You don't have to wait long before the large black cleric appears again. He's changed into travel clothes and has a hood up. I will probably end up walking back in the rain, I thought it best to be prepared. Lets go.

Walking quickly back to the southern end of town, you reach the Professor's House just as the first drops begin to fall.

A trio of hooded figures come into the house just in front of the rain. After lifting their hoods off, it is revealed that they are Fruril, Kristoph, and Chad, returned from the Temple.

Gather everyone around me. he says standing over Gundwolfe. Bending a knee beside the bed, he begins to pray. Lady of the Graves, heed my plea. These brave souls have stood up against the abominations and now require your aid to recover. Oh great Lady, grant them respite from their wounds.

Kristoph bows his head in reverence as the priest channels the divine and heals the gathered companions. "May I someday be blessed to be such a channel for our goddess's will," he says quietly at the end of Chad's prayer. Speaking louder, he asks the priest, "If I may ask a bit more, we were exposed to several large swarms of rats while exploring the grounds of Harrowstone. They frequently carry disease - is there something you can do to help any who may have become infected recover quickly? I also have been attacked by numerous blood sucking stirge today and would be grateful for help recovering from their wounds..."

Kristoph is infected with Filth Fever (http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/glossary.html#_filth-fever) still and has taken 5 Constitution damage.
Regardless of Chad's ability to help with other forms of healing, Kristoph then thanks the priest for his assistance and offers to walk to the temple with him to provide company during the rainstorm.

Gundwolf stirs fitfully as consciousness returns to him. With a sudden start, his eyes flicker open and he looks rapidly between the faces of the figures gathered above him, seeming not to recognize anybody. He growls and reaches for his weapon (removed with the rest of his armor and harness) but freezes with a sharp intake of breath. The pain seems to jar him into cognizance of his surroundings, and after gingerly laying back down he growls out, How many did I take?

Elian conspicuously slips away after helping bring Gundwolf to the priest. At the conclusion of the channeling, he steps back into the room just in time to hear Gundwolf's question. How many did you take down with you, or how many hits did you take before you went down yourself? Oddly, I think it was three, in either case. Certainly more than I would dare face at once, friend. Rest with ease, you have more than earned it. He smiles slightly, with his mouth close, at the half-orc before looking back up the the rest of the group.

Noting Kristoph's offer, he adds, I too would be happy to provide company back to the cathedral. I find the rain oddly soothing, and have no better task to attend to, thanks to your aide. My paltry knowledge of bandages and herbalism have little use beside the powers of the divine. And besides, it may be best if none of us walk about alone in the dark. I fear we may have already made a few enemies along with our friends.

I'm afraid not, mighty Kristoph. Curing such things are well beyond my abilities. Come, we shall request aid of Father Grimburrow. He heads down out of the room as a bright flash and heavy thunderclap occur almost in the same instant. The sound is deafening. Though I am not afraid of rain, I wonder if might not be wise to remain indoors during such a storm. his eyes flick up as you reach the front room, noticing that the storm shutters on the house are currently being closed by Kendra.

Lady Lorrimor, is it so bad outside?

Turning around, she holds wipes her hands on her apron.

You can't hear? The wind is howling and the rain is coming down in sheets! You can barely see fifteen feat for all the water. You are as likely to get lost and fall than make it back to the temple. Please, all of you, remain here.

As you wish Lady Morrimor.

Dinner will be ready soon, please, all of you, make yourselves comfortable. I have a feeling that we will be here for a while. she says as she returns to the kitchen.

Chad makes his way to the table, pulls out a chair, and sits.

Sir Kristoph, please sit. I must admit that I am a bit fascinated by you. A Paladin of Pharasma, in the flesh. I've only heard rumors and stories. Tell me more about it.

I have not created any sort of background for how/why you are a paladin of a deity that normally does not have one. It is a somewhat rare, if not singular, thing. Feel free to be creative.

Sir Kristoph, please sit. I must admit that I am a bit fascinated by you. A Paladin of Pharasma, in the flesh. I've only heard rumors and stories. Tell me more about it.
Kristoph looks uncomfortable for a moment, as if he had just eaten something that had already gone off. Looking at Chad he says, "I assume you ask out of genuine curiosity and not to critique, so I will answer. This subject is one that always worries me, however, as many of your brothers and sisters of the clergy do not approve of me or my calling."

He sighs, frustration plain in his face. "When the farmers who raised me gave me to the church, I was eventually brought to Caliphas in the south. There, I was trained and educated at the Maiden's Choir cathedral to become a priest. Unfortunately, I lacked the patience and mindset of a priest. I was unable to master even the most basic of clerical prayers and tasks, though my faith was unwavering. The clergy was preparing to transfer me to a secular school to train me to become a warrior for the faith when something happened. It was late one night when I was studying the patterns of the stars from the observatory at the church - using the night sky to divine the will of the goddess was one of the few areas of the faith for which I felt any affinity." Taking a moment to sip some ale, the paladin continues. "I was gazing upwards, feeling the stars pull upon my spirit when something happened inside me. It was quiet, no flashing lights or sacred visions, but I felt a new calling. The church had always taught that the vilest of abominations were those unliving, undead creatures who profaned reality itself with their unholy existence. I knew that other faiths had great champions, called paladins, who were the destroyers of such monsters. And I thought to myself, "Perhaps, if Pharasma wills it, I could be such a champion." The next morning I approached the priests with the idea.

Well, they laughed at me. They said that there were no such things within the church, and it was madness to even consider. I left the cathedral that night, prepared to find some other path for my life, serving Pharasma in some other way. For the next several years I attended services faithfully while training to become a knight of some kind. The order of knights had several other squires at the time, and we would train with weapons and armor most of the day. At night I would look up at the stars, continuing to feel their pull and the draw of my calling. I was fifteen at the time."

Kristoph continues to tell his story to Chad as they eat, the difficulty of the telling still showing plainly. "About three years later the knight I served as squire was traveling between Caliphas and Vigil, there to meet with some members of one of the paladin orders. As we passed the haunted lands south of the Hungry Mountains we were beset by several undead. I recognized them later as ghouls, their stenches were overwhelming. My master defeated them easily, all save one, whom I fought. During the battle I prayed for strength from Pharasma, regardless of how I had been abandoned by the church. I swore a silent oath, saying that if she would only provide me the strength to defeat this vile creature in her name, I would serve her forever.

At the end of my prayer I smote the ghoul. I do not say that in the sense of simply defeating it - rather, I felt the power of Pharasma strike through my arm and sword and her holy power flow through me. Apparently my master saw it also, for he made it a point to introduce me to several of the mighty paladins in Lastwall while we were there. They confirmed what had happened, declaring me to be a true paladin in spite of my faith. We returned to Caliphas where I was ushered into the august presence of Mother Verith Thestia, the high priestess herself. I did not know what to expect, though I was sure she would ridicule me or in some other manner send me forth from her presence in disgrace. So, I bowed low and waited for her to speak and explain what would be done with me. She called in the inquisitor, Zetiah Mardhalas, who inspected me closely. The two used powerful magic, invoking the name of Pharasma to guide them and reveal the truth of what I was to be in the church. I was not able to see or hear what they discovered, but in the end they declared me a faithful paladin of our lady Pharasma." Kristoph took a deep breath and a long pull of ale.

"I was given terms of my service, a series of oaths by which I was to live and serve and sent out to find my own way. The cathedral lacked the tools or teachers to effectively guide me, so they felt the best way for me to serve was to travel Ustalav and serve wherever I found the need. That was some four years ago. I think you are the first priest to whom I have explained myself in that time, and all of you," gesturing to those gathered around the dinner table, "are the only others who have heard the story."

Elian sits quietly at the table, sipping wine from a tall glass as he listens to the half-elf's tale. Nodding quietly in recognition, he makes no comments throughout. As Kristoph falls silent, he speaks quietly. "Odd thing, that a half-elf would find his way to a community, only to find that it was a lonely existence therein. A brave story indeed. I for one, think that the path you have taken is a needed one. In these days, Pharasma needs champions to fight the abominations and protect the sanctity of life, in whatever form they come. Paladins have always been known for their ability to fight the undead, it is only right that Pharasma also uses such a tool. May the Lady of the Grave judge you fairly. he says the last part with a bowed head, using his fist to trace a spiral on his chest.

Kristoph also makes the symbol against his chest bowing his head in response to the priest's words. "I have found those few in the clergy to accept my place in the church are often like you - living on the outskirts of civilization and willing to do what it takes to serve her in whatever way becomes necessary. It is nice to have an ally who trusts you. Thank you." he says, before turning to the rest of the assembled. "Gundwolf and I have spoken at length, and for my efforts I earned a sound beating at his hand with the sparring weapons," the paladin says, a smirk on his face as he looks at the usually surly half-orc. "I do not intend to press anyone to speak on their past who finds it uncomfortable, but I am curious about the rest of you as well. "Hmm, oh, Socrates?" Aurora glances up at the large mottled owl cleaning its feathers on the bookshelf. "Um, yes- you could call him a familiar, though I think of him as more of a friend most times." The owl gives a low hoot as it continues its grooming. "He- he just showed up one day at Garrenhold, right around the time my powers started manifesting. The professor told me there was a special connection between him and my magic, and that I ought to keep him close. N-not any kind of bad connection - lots of powerful wizards have animal familiars!" She looks around nervously for a moment, her memories going back to those accusations of Witchcraft!!! that appeared along with the magic and the owl. Seeing noone at the table immediately yelling at or threatening her, she takes a breath and continues. "Anyway, we're a team. He can't speak, exactly, but I can usually get a- a sense, or an idea, of what he's feeling. Right now, for example, he's amused that we're talking about him - he doesn't often get to be the center of attention!" Socrates' head swivels almost upside-down as he gazes down at the party with piercing gold-black eyes. "It's hard to explain, like having someone else living in your head sometimes. N-not really, of course! Just their emotions..." She takes another sip of soup to calm herself. "Anyway, that was all a long time ago. Now I'm just Miss Edmunson, apprentice midwife and herbalist of Korren. Or, at least I was..." She frowns sadly at the table in front of her, lost in her own thoughts.

Indeed, the ability to give life is the greatest of blessings bestowed upon mortals. His face shifts to a blank mask. The fates are fickle, indeed, to give talents so widely and with so little consistency. To one, the ability to protect life. To another, the ability to deny it. Oblivious to Gundwolf's earlier discomfort, Kristoph responds, "What is most excellent about the power to give life is that it is the antithesis to undead! Power like that channeled by Aurora or Chad will heal the living and cut off the undead from their unholy animating magic. Infusing such holy energy into the bodies of the dead can even raise them back to true life in some miraculous cases! It may not be natural in the common sense of the word, but even devout worshipers of nature use life-giving energy in their work."

Kristoph is clearly excited as he continues to speak. "To give life to others is such an incredible gift - I admire any capable of being such a blessing to others. Perhaps, with Pharasma's blessings, I will live to earn such ability. In the meanwhile, some of us must be content to bash in the skulls of skeletons, purging the taint of undeath from our world one abomination at a time. For such work, I think there are few I have seen so capable as Fruril or Gundwolf. I think it is quite the fortuitous circumstances that have brought such a diverse company together. It furthers my opinion of the late Professor, may Pharasma judge him kindly. With strong arms on the front lines with healing power to support them we may yet be able to advance his just cause in this place and protect this town from the vile undead within Harrowstone."

*THUMP*.....*THUMP*.....*THUMP* almost rhythmically comes from the door.

I am glad you are awake. I do not like this... his voice trails off as he looks towards the door.

With his voice, the noise from the door stops. You hear the slow methodical clunk of something moving across the front porch. The footsteps are joined by others, though you cannot tell how many.

Kristoph puts a finger to his lips, signaling for quiet from those in sight. Moving as quietly as he is able, he moves towards the door, and then shakes his head and moves towards the window nearest the door. Peeking through, he looks at the source of the sounds, doing his best to pierce the darkness.

Stealth [roll0] to move quietly to the best vantage point from which to look at the front porch without opening any doors or windows. If the shutters are too close and there is no way to look outside through them, he will try to gently (stealthily) move the shutters back just enough to see outside.
Perception [roll1] - note that Kristoph has low-light vision and if there is any reason to be concerned about undead will use Detect Undead (http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/spells/detectUndead.html#detect-undead) without hesitation. If this allows him to detect undead through the door or windows (due to them being thin enough that they don't block the ability's effect) he will use that if there is no other way to determine who is outside without being seen himself.

Kristoph's eyes go flat as he says, just loudly enough to be heard by all in the room over the omnipresent storm, "They are undead. Get everyone armed and ready to fight. If we have time, help everyone put on armor that knows how to wear it, too. My armor is upstairs in my room. Hurry!" With nothing more said, he takes a position near the door, his shield in place and his longsword drawn.

Kristoph has prepared an action to attack the first undead that enters the door forcibly. He will be the last to don armor, as his will likely take the longest. See this (http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/equipment.html#getting-into-and-out-of-armor) link for details on time needed for each type of armor.

If the undead continue to mill about long enough for everyone to get armed and armored, the Kristoph will move to begin combat by throwing open the door and attacking, hopefully surprising the undead.

When everyone is ready, be prepared to move those back out of the way - I will not suffer the undead to walk the streets unchecked, and after handling these here we must be sure other homes aren't under attack as well..."

Elian looks up from where he's sliding a table across the floor. Slack-jawed, his mouth works for a few moments before words seem to come to him. You want to fight those things? You want to leave what little safety we have, to risk life and limb for villagers who tried to kill us?!? Do you have any idea exactly how dangerous these "things" that go bump in the night can be? You might as well catch the rain or hold back the tide for all the good you can do!

He looks around the room, frantically searching the faces of those gathered before him for something- and seems to not find it. You people are all insane! Completely maniacal! Fine! We will play the heroes, and saaaave the village! Truth be told, heroes die trying, more often than not!

He seems lost for a moment, flitting his gaze back and forth between his mace and crossbow. Oh, blast it all! What I would not give for a shield right now! Muttering to himself, he gently loosens the crossbow and places it in its loop over his shoulder. Drawing the mace, he looks back to Kristoph. Hear me well, paladin. If the gods deem that we should live through this night, we will have things to discuss on the morrow. I will guard your back and flank as best I can.

He assumes a combative position, behind and to the left of Kristoph, mace at the ready. He continues to grumble and mutter under his breath. Occasionally you hear snatches that sound like "insanity...," and "nonsensical tomfoolery!"

Your Detect Undead detects a shifting number of undead auras coming in and out of range (it seems as if they are milling around the house). The most you detect at any one time is fourteen. They are all faint. As Gundwolfe gets his armor on, the number you can detect begins to drop rapidly.

As Gundwolf finishes his preparations Kristoph says, grimly, "There are over a dozen weak undead out there. If we do not confront them shortly, others, likely less prepared, will." Looking to Elian he says, "Sometimes fate chooses for us the proper path. If you wish to remain behind, I will think no less of you. Miss Kendra needs protection, but so do the innocent townsfolk of Ravengro. I will be attacking the undead when you open the door. Please do so."

Not waiting to don his armor, Kristoph prepares himself to charge out the door, nodding for Elian to open the door.

Continuing to grumble and scoff about "innocent" townspeople- with pitchforks, torches, and knives- Elian steps forward to grip the door handle. He looks back to the motley companions assembled in the room. Kendra. When we leave, methinks you would be well advised to put a table and or heavier furniture behind this door. When we return, unless one of us says "the tomb is empty, the day is drear," do NOT let us in. His head turns to the door at a slightly louder scuffling, and quickly looks back. Where there is weak undead, there is strong somewhere behind it. Remember, Kendra. Gods willing, we will return shortly. Sparing just one last glance to the crew behind him, Elian throws open the door, jumping back to behind Kristoph and Gundwolf in one smooth motion.

The rain slicked ground squishes under foot as you feel the cold water splash on your face. Your sight is severely hampered by the rain, a handicap you would wish upon your foes. Though, their lifeless eyes show no reaction to the storm. Only the cold look of death seems to radiate from them in the flashes of lightning that rock the party.

Aurora ducks down into a defensive stance, a pale white light appearing in her hand. Fruril, drops his bow, and in a smooth upward motion, cleaves the nearest walking corpse in two. Elian, seeing his chance, backs up and lets loose with another spell, this time the undead seems to pause. But the rest of the undead horde seems relentless as more appear from the storm, two land solid hits on Gundwolfe and Kristophe as they valiantly stand in the open field.

Gundwolfe's injuries prove too much, and he falls to the ground, his bandages bloody. Kristoph reels from the hit and is unable to respond in kind.

Suddenly, the party feels a warm light from behind them. Chad stands still, holding his hands in prayer and chants loudly to himself.

Lady of Justice, Lady of the Judged, grant me your strength so that we may push back this abominable horde!

The light encompasses the party and your feel rejuvenated by it.

Gundwolfe's eyes open.

The light of consciousness reenters Gundwolf's eyes, and is replaced by cold fear. Grasping for his heavy flail, he rolls away from the zombies and toward the safety of the house...

As discussed in the Facebook thread:

The rain has begun to soak through your clothes, though its chill is nothing compared to the one down your spine as the undead relentlessly march forward. The warmth from Chad's light fades suddenly, and your body begins to ache.

Fruril and Aurora work together and manage to pull the fallen Gundwolfe from the grasping hands of the zombies. His wits come back to him in time for him to grab his weapon quickly before they pull him out of range. Elian screams out for a retreat while entering the house himself. Before he does though, he attempts another spell against the undead, though they are unaffected.

Chad and Kristoph seem like a lighthouse during a hurricane. Surrounded on all sides, the undead seem to swell about them like the angry crash of waves on a shoreline. Taking solid hits, both men falter, but Chad holds his hand out as a beacon and touches Kristoph, who feels rejuvenated at its warmth.

Chad closes his eyes for a moment, a calm seems to come over him as he grabs Kristoph and pulls himself in front of him, placing Kristoph out of reach of most of the horde. Turning his head around, he looks Kristoph in the eye and says only "Live." before running into the middle of the attacking abominations.

Kristoph uses the distraction to retreat back to the house where he is met by Kendra casts a spell on him. A translucent barrier appears around Kristoph as Kendra tells him This should be protect you.

Kristoph gets hit for 9, healed for 11, and then hit again for 6 as he retreats.

"They- they're gone!" Aurora slumps to her knees beside the door as a wave of relief and exhaustion hits her all at once. "Oh, Chad...!" She starts to cry, softly.

-------

Later that night, in her room, Aurora finds sleep elusive, even after all the events of the day. After tossing and turning for what feels like hours, she finally sits up, finds Socrates, and sits cross-legged on the floor in front of him. I have to be stronger. The unspoken words echo in her mind as the golden, unblinking eyes of the owl bore into her. The memory of the Piper's attack at the prison floats unbidden into her mind, and her failure to stop it with the haunt siphon. Everyone was counting on me, and I let them down... The owl's head swivels 90 degrees, but his stare never wavers or breaks. Her mind starts to replay every horrible blow taken by Gundwolf, Kristoph, and Fruril throughout the day - from the skeletons, from the floating axe, from the Piper, from the zombies - and her own inability to help. Her hands curl into fists. I couldn't stop the Piper, I couldn't help the others, I couldn't save Chad! Her breathing comes faster and faster as she watches the acolyte disappear again and again under a crowd of zombies and hears his cries echoing in the darkness. I have to be stronger!!! Socrates finally blinks.

"You know something, don't you?" she whispers, stroking his feathers. He stares solemnly at her, but remains silent. "Something about... whatever this is that's been happening to me. Whatever the Professor knew, you know." The owl hoots softly in the darkness. "I have to know!" she cries in a louder voice, though still softer than normal. "I thought I could run from it, hide, maybe... but whatever it is, it's got power and I need it!" The edge in her own voice startles her, and looks around in surprise to discover that she's risen to her feet and was nearly yelling. Going to the door, she listens for a long moment before deciding that nobody heard her. Crossing back to Socrates, she kneels down, sits, and puts her hands on her knees. "I need to be stronger," she says firmly, her green eyes staring just as intensely as the owl's. "Teach me."

Will update sheet later today. I'll take this opportunity to exchange the Evil Eye (http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/advanced/baseClasses/witch.html#evil-eye) hex for the Misfortune (http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/advanced/baseClasses/witch.html#evil-eye) hex, too, since that one can affect undead!

Elian's shock emanates broadly in his features. He cautiously half-walks/half-stumbles to the door, like a cat ready to spring backwards. He looks into the yard from the now-open doorway for a few long seconds before stepping back inside and closing the door gently. I... I do not understand. He stammers briefly to himself before turning back to the party. I apologize for... overly worrying you all. It appears that I was... mistaken... as to the zombies resolve. He spends the next half hour assisting in fortifying the windows and doors on the first floor before retiring back to his room.

If failed, Kristoph takes [roll1] Dexterity damage and [roll2] Constitution damage
Kristoph looks out the doorway for several moments before backing out of the way for it to be closed and barred. "All who live must face her judgement," he says quietly, bowing his head in reverence at the cleric's sacrifice. "May she judge you kindly."

Turning to the task at hand of barring doors and windows, the paladin works silently, his face troubled.

Waking early after a restless hour or two Kristoph feels a bit better, though the wounds from the stirges the previous day still ache and his sheets are damp with sweat. Thinking to the rat swarms, he wonders if he should be concerned about fever, but shrugs and moves downstairs. Finding no sign of zombies at the door he practices his morning drills in the open room, waiting for the rain to clear so that he may look for any remains of the fallen priest.

Kristoph moves to take Kendra's arm and walk out to meet the sheriff. Stepping out into the light he sees a stomach-turning sight - the remains of Chad and pieces of undead all around are impossible to miss. Looking at the sheriff directly the paladin bows his head before speaking. "Last night during the storm the Lorrimor residence was attacked by over a dozen zombies. If not for Chad, the Pharasmin cleric, we would have all fallen. As it was, his life was the cost for ours. Were there any other homes attacked last night, or was it just Miss Kendra's?" he asks, doing his best to be proper and respectful but not backing down from the lawman's presence. "If you will allow it, I was planning to collect his remains and properly bury them this morning with the assistance of the other clergy at the temple. Father Grimburrow will likely be upset, but Chad fought bravely and demonstrated the very best of our faith. We have not begun that work this morn due to the trials of last night's attack."

The sheriff takes a step back for a moment at the sight of Kirstoph with Kendra. His expression changes from surprise, to irritation, and finally to sadness at the mention of Chad.

Kendra stands silently next to Kristoph and nods her head at every word, seemingly assuring the Sheriff of the validity of what Kristoph was saying.

Damn...

Holding up two fingers into his mouth, he whistles, and one of the deputies that followed you yesterday walks up from the road. Walking around the field of body parts and blood, she gingerly steps onto the porch.

We need to take their statement of what happened here. Send Riff to the Temple and tell them to hurry up, its one of their own.

The deputy walks back around to the road and speaks with the other two people standing there. A hush falls over them as they all take another look at the gore in the front lawn. One turns to leave towards the temple, as the other reaches into his pack and pulls out a quill and several pieces of parchment. Walking around to the door, the deputy hands the paper and pen to the sheriff.

Do you mind if we come in to do this...it would be easier.

Kendra nods and steps out of the way.

She is obviously letting them in, but it is up to you whether you do so as well.

I need each of ya to, without sayin' anythin' to each other, write down an account of what happened here last night. Deputy Trestleblade here has quills and paper.

He turns back to Kristoph.

I appreciate your cooperation with this. Several other places in town were attacked, fer sure. Lots of reports of noises from those that wern't attacked. Not surprisingly I think, the temple of Pharasma was unaffected. They knew better than to mess with that lot.

Though y'all have the worst that I've seen. Most other places were attacked by one or two. We're getting reports from everyone so that we can find a pattern.

"Of course, Sheriff. You need 'who, what, where, and when,' correct? Give me a moment," Kristoph says, taking a piece of parchment and quill with ink from the deputy. "If you don't mind, I will be going by the cathedral after giving you this statement - I feel confident they could use an extra pair of hands today, and I wish to report the events of last night to Father Grimburrow as well."

Kristoph writes for several minutes in silence before giving the parchment back to the man. After strapping on his armor and gathering up his things he says, "If anyone else wants to join me, we can walk to the cathedral together. I plan to be there most of the morning." Turning to the sheriff again, he asks, "Are there any other graveyards in the area besides the one at the church? Perhaps we should ask Father Grimburrow to check the grounds and be sure they are securely consecrated still and haven't been defiled by whatever raised these undead..."

During the storm last night several members of the household were woken by a loud banging on the front door. After everyone was up we checked the door, finding over a dozen zombies outside. At my urging (which I sorely regret now) we went out to engage the undead, hoping to prevent them from attacking any homes less prepared than ours or anyone out on the road in the storm. The abominations overwhelmed us, forcing us back into the house. Brother Chad, the young cleric from the Cathedral who had spent the evening with us, valiantly sacrificed himself to enable our safe retreat and fell to the zombie horde. We were unable to save him, and several of us barely escaped with our lives. After taking several moments inside to regroup, we prepared to go out and attempt to rescue Chad, but by the time we opened the door again he had died and the undead departed. Seeing nothing to be gained from charging blindly into the night we secured the door again and did our best to wait out the rest of the night, taking turns watching the door while others slept. Given the violence of the night before, we waited to exit the house till the Sheriff's arrival this morning.

Elian frowns slightly, but accepts the quill and parchment without comment.

Early in the evening, the Lorrimor homestead was attacked by a small horde of zombies. By my count, at least 10 were on the grounds at one point. Possibly a handful more. The scene was hectic and, as you can see, bloody. A few of the zombies were felled. Over the course of the encounter, several of the defenders took gruesome blows, and Chad, after healing the defenders as best he could, sacrificed himself so that we could retreat back inside the home. The windows and doors were fortified and held without further bloodshed.

"I will go with you to the cathedral, Kristoph." Aurora announces as she waits her turn for the pen and ink to make her statement. "We should be the ones to break the awful news about... about Chad, and perhaps the Father will be able to help us put these things back to rest for good..."

In the middle of the night, our company awoke to slow, rhythmic knocking on the front door. It was a pouring storm outside, and the knocker didn't respond to our hails, so we didn't open the door immediately. When we did, we saw a small horde of walking corpses, at least 8 or more, making their way away from the Professor's residence and towards the rest of the town. Filled with righteous zeal, Master Kristoph instructed us to attack them in order to protect the townsfolk, and so we pursued them and gave battle out in the yard. Our company fought bravely, but we were beset on all sides and in danger of being overcome. That's when Chad's brave sacrifice bought us time to retreat back into the house, and the next thing we knew, the enemy had vanished into the storm.

"I am not really sure what to make of things, but the sheriff needs our help and has seen fit to make me a temporary deputy of the town watch. I think that will help us get to the root of this problem and figure out what is wrong with this town, but I will need all of your help. We haven't made the best impression, and though no one is going to be forced to to anything," he glances at Gundwolf and Elian, "I would really appreciate your cooperation. Will a couple of you help me talk to these children and then come with me to the statue? We need to check out the area before any sign of vandals disappears. Then I want to head to the cathedral and speak to Father Grimburrow." Kristoph takes a deep breath. "Chad's sacrifice needs to be hailed for the heroic act it was, but I am concerned. Part of the church's duties is to protect the bodies of the deceased from being animated into unlife. For some reason that has failed here, and we need to discover what went wrong so that it can be prevented in the future. Then there is the issue of whatever necromancer did this - there is vengeance that must be meted out, and I know just the people to do it..." he finishes, smiling at the assembled group. "Will you all help me, please?"

I will not roll a diplomacy check to convince the PCs to help, but hope I have given good reasons for everyone to cooperate in-character. Please present any counter ideas or issues your PC would have with this plan of action in this thread to Kristoph. We need to have this discussion IC, IMO. As the deputies and sheriff leave to handle business elsewhere Kristoph stops the boys from running off and sits down with them on the porch. Directing his questions primarily to the young acolyte, but not ignoring the others, he asks, "Do you all know who I am and what it means to be a paladin or a deputy?" Not waiting for verbal responses he continues, "It means trying to take care of people and protecting them from danger and evil. Something is happening around here, and the vandalism at the statue is related. I need you all to be honest with me and tell me why you were over there this morning, what and who you saw there, and anything else unusual that you noticed. Maybe we can find something meaningful in the tracks or a clue in the vandalism. Bring your armor, weapons, and other tools. If anyone is still sore from yesterday, I can help heal you as well. Shall we go?" He then turns and leads the way, his stride purposeful and confident.

Kristoph has 5 uses of Lay on Hands available now. Each will heal for 1d6 HPs to party members, but will heal him for 1d6+2. As such, if there are other options for healing that we should use, let's use them first and use up the remaining healing to top everyone off tonight. If anyone is concerned about entering combat with their current HP total, however, he will gladly help heal them now.

(Currently Kristoph is at 16 HPs. He could have as many as 18 until the Constitution damage (4) dealt by the stirges is healed. When we get to the cathedral he will ask regarding that sort of healing.)

I see. Rise, Sir Kristoph.

Father Grimburrow turns around to the acolytes. Run back and fetch a cart and supplies. We must collect the bodies and rebury them. I will need some blessed water as well so that we can begin the process of consecrating this ground.

I have already talked with the Sheriff this morning. I am assuming he has already agreed to help you. Him and I had words this morning after the attack about how to proceed. the father's eyebrows furl deeper The sheriff can be a stubborn man, but he is not entirely unreasonable.

Kristoph slowly rises, keeping his gaze respectfully lowered. "I am sure we will all be in attendance, Father. Everyone from the Lorrimor residence owes their life to him, and expect they will want to show their respects," he says. "The sheriff has specifically requested we investigate the vandalism at the memorial statue. After we have been there I will return and do what I can to help at the church. Is there any chance these bodies came from the Boneyard there? If someone sabotaged the sacred protections that consecrate those grounds it would explain the source of all these abominable undead...Such corruption of the deceased of this town must not be allowed to go unpunished!"

The paladin stands back from the muddy ground around the statue, doing his best to stay out of the way of the more capable trackers. At Aurora's question he says, "I do not know, but I think we must discover the answer to that riddle before whoever is doing this finishes writing the word... Can anyone tell what kind of blood this is? If it were human surely we would have heard of missing people, so it is more likely livestock of some kind. If someone is missing animals it might give us a clue as to who is to blame for this."

As you survey the grisly scene, nothing stands out. Though Gundwolfe tries desperately to find any clues, he is unable to do so. Though Aurora is unable to tell what type of blood it is, she does know that there certainly isn't enough blood being used at the site for anything larger than a rat or maybe a dog.

Asking around town for missing animals may prove fruitful. More knowledge checks about the prisoners and their history could provide some clues as well.

Ian, go ahead and reroll with the correct bonuses. Anyone else can aid him if they want, with a DC 10 aid another. Though that means your character must also spend time researching. (roll a d4 to determine how long)

With a few specific aid another check, Ian would pass the DCs to learn new information about what is going on.

You approach the same dreary gate where you started the professor's funeral walk. The mud here has numerous, obvious, footprints going in either direction. As you begin to walk through the restlands, an unmistakable chill begins to rest over your body. You can see several graves have been disturbed, and more than one mausoleum's door has been pried open.

As Aurora nearly collapses after several hours of research, Elian brings her a tome he found hiding behind a few others. It looked like it had been hidden there long ago.

In it, she learns the following:

Exact details on the society are difficult to discern, but chief among the Whispering Way’s goals are discovering formulae for creating liches and engineering the release of the Whispering Tyrant. Agents often travel to remote sites or areas plagued by notorious haunts or undead menaces to perform field research or even to capture unique monsters. Their symbol is a gagged skull, and those who learn too many of the Way’s secrets are often murdered, and their mouths mutilated to prevent their bodies from divulging secrets via speak with dead.

Elian reads over Aurora's shoulder as they inspect the musty tome. Oh, my. That seems... unpleasant. I must say, I do wish the professor was here with us. I am certain he would be able to provide insight into this groups doings, and perhaps help us figure out what to do about them. As it is, I suspect we can safely assume who we are dealing with, though I cannot make good sense of what we should do about it. Let us share this information with Kristoph and the others.

In the Restlands...
Kristoph's face starts frowning at the first sign of a disturbed grave and gets to the point of barely controlled fury the longer he and the others explore the graveyard. He looks closely at several graves and sticks his head into a mausoleum to see if he can determine anything else before he walks slowly around the perimeter, closely inspecting the fence and looking for signs of anti-undead consecration that has been upset.

"I am not skilled in the area of tracking or searching for fine details. Please take your time and be thorough - we need to find what has caused this holy ground to be disturbed so it can be repaired and the dead can rest in peace," he says to his companions. Then with a voice shaking with passion and hatred he continues, "If you find signs of the necromancer who did this, inspect them closely so that we may find the fiend and bring vengeance upon the bastard!"

Aurora yawns and rubs tiredness from her eyes as Elian brings over the tomb, not sure she can stand to look at one more page. But, as she flips open the cover and starts leafing through the pages, her eyes widen, she sits up straight for the first time in hours, and eagerly scans page after page as fast as she can. "Yes, yes... this all fits! The Whispering Way-" her voice cuts off as she realizes the seriousness of what they've uncovered. "This fits, um... you-know-who's agenda perfectly. They're searching for the secrets to create greater undead, so they're ransacking tombs and raiding sites known to contain powerful, malevolent energy. Places like... like Harrowstone..." Aurora's hand flies to her mouth as she takes in the implications.

Elian reads over Aurora's shoulder as they inspect the musty tome. Let us share this information with Kristoph and the others.

At the point that Kristoph and Gundwolfe would be searching, Elian and Aurora are still doing research. The research will conclude at ~7:00PM (1900 for you Navy People ) based on dice rolls.

So, for Elian and Aurora to catch up with them at the graveyard, Kristoph and Gundwolfe would need to spend several hours doing something. Finding, searching, and following the the tracks takes ~30 minutes, leaving you about 1:30 (1330)

Gundwolfe and Kristoph find several obvious tracks (DC 12) exiting the restlands that lead back to various graves. However, they do not find any tracks leading into the Restlands, except for their own. Kristoph does not see any obvious signs of magical tampering.

In obvious annoyance, Gundwolf spits noisily onto the ground. I see no tracks into the graveyard, only the outward trail of the undead. He idly scratches one stubbled cheek. The sheriff said there wasn't as big a group anywhere else in the village as at the house last night, but maybe there's something else we can find? He looks at Kristoph, somewhere between frustrated and bored.

Aurora and Elian are in the library still, if you wish to see them. he says as he greets you with a weary smile.

Listening intently to Kristoph, Father Grimburrow nods his head several times.

No mere necromancer could have broken the wards without us knowing. I fear there is a deeper power at work here. The Harrowstone Prison. I know the Professor was investigating it when he died, perhaps its dark influence is growing. Though I do not know why. It has been dormant for a century since the fire that ended its tenure.

"The service for Brother Chad will begin soon, but we have some bad news - it is clear that at least some of the bodies animated as zombies came from the cathedral graveyard. Father Grimburrow believes that malevolent forces at Harrowstone must be to blame. I think tomorrow we should return to the ruins, healed and prepared for the worst. Have you found anything that may aid us?" he says upon finding them in the library.

"It was just here somewhere... let me see... Ah! Look!" Pointing to a specific passage, she explains what she and Elain have learned about the Whispering Way. As you file into the back row of the main chamber, an acolyte awaits you and hands you a black robe and hood. As you look around, every other participant is garbed in black, though some have various ornaments attached to their outfits.

Father Grimburrow walks down the center aisle, flanked by two hooded acolytes. One carries an ornate vase, the other a gavel made from what looks like a high quality wood. Both are placed on an alter featuring the Spiral of Pharasma while Father Grimburrow takes his place at the pulpit. Throughout this, a low droning pitch from mourners humming echoes throughout.

Father Grimburrow raises his hand and the humming ceases. The congregation sits and bows as he begins his service.

Brothers and sisters, last night one of our own joined the line to be judged by Pharasma. Chad Osworth. Brother, acolyte, friend, and faithful. He was a beacon in the night, a rock in the storm, and a stalwart reminder of Pharasma's will. He will be remembered for his unflinching loyalty and commitment to the ideals of Pharasma. Always the first to help, he never shied away from his duty, and last night, he made the ultimate sacrifice in the battle against a horde of undead abominations. I can think of no ending more fitting for Chad than the one he faced last night. His sacrifice and his faith helped save the lives of those who would seek to help us in our darkest hour. Kristoph, Gundwolfe, Aurora, Elian, and Kendra; these people are alive today because of one man, Chad.

Let us bow our head and pray to the Lady to judge him fairly, and to pass him quickly unto his final resting place so that his soul may know peace for eternity.

He concludes this final sentence with a circular hand gesture, mimicking the one Chad gave you all last night before dinner.

I invite anyone with something to say about Chad Osworth, to please approach the pulpit, so that we may all share in his memory.

Kristoph remains in his matte-black armor, the holy symbol of Pharasma clearly visible in the flickering light. As the congregation hums he joins in, the tune familiar and comforting. His motions match those of the congregation easily, and other than his unique apparel he fits into the crowd well. He nods at the benediction and speaks the common prayers clearly from memory with the rest of the worshipers, his face unusually peaceful.

At the priest's request for speakers he takes a moment to look down, muttering a prayer under his breath before rising from his seat. He does not approach the altar, however, instead beginning a somber song from The Bones Land in a Spiral, a Pharasmin holy text, in a low, reedy voice.

"You shall cross the barren desert,
but you shall not die of thirst.
You shall wander far in safety,
though you do not know the way.

You shall speak your words in foreign lands,
and all will understand,
You shall see the face of gods and live.

Be not afraid,
I go before you always,
Come follow Me,
and together we will rest.

If you pass through raging waters
in the sea, you shall not drown.
If you walk amidst the burning flames,
you shall not be harmed.

If you stand before the power of hell
and death is at your side,
know that I am with you, through it all

Be not afraid,
I go before you always,
Come follow Me,
and together we will rest.

Blessed are your faithful,
for the spiral shall be theirs.
Blessed are you that weep and mourn,
for one day you shall laugh.

And if you lived well and died in faith,
blessed, blessed are you!

Be not afraid,
I go before you always,
Come follow Me,
and together we will rest."

My intent is for this song to be familiar to the congregation and that they might join in singing. It is based on a Christian hymn with several lines changed to fit the Pharasmin faith.

Regardless of the participation or not of the congregation, Kristoph will finish the song from his place in the pews.

At first, a few heads turn, and their eyes find Kristoph. For the first verse, he sings alone. By the time he's reached the second verse, several voices have joined his, including one you recognize as Leone's. By the time the congregation reaches the chorus, everyone has joined. The harmonies fill the air, echoing inside the hall. The chant gets louder, especially during the chorus. Several members of the congregation begin to split off into different voice parts, adding complex vocal harmonies to the already impressive ensemble.

Suddenly, it all stops, and Kristoph finishes the final chorus solo. His final note is held out while the congregation hums tonic underneath him.

There is no cheering, there is no applause, but you can see several nods of approval from around the hall. There is a light ruffle of feathers, as a pair of birds descends from the rafters to the alter.

They are whippoorwills, a sign of Pharasma's approval.

They are whippoorwills.

Several gasps escape the lips of the congregation. The whispers crescendo until Father Grimburrow raises his hands.

Thank you, Brother Kristoph, for that stirring song. And thus concludes the ceremonies.

The birds walk along the table for a bit before finally flying away. The congregation passes through the doors, several of which reach out to shake Kristoph's hand.

As the song concludes and the whippoorwills descend from on high tears come to Kristoph's eyes. He silently accepts the outstretched hands of the congregation without trying to hide the emotion he feels. He takes a moment to lock eyes with Leone and embraces her solemnly as she exits.

He takes several moments to sit in silence before leaving, his head bowed and eyes low. When he rises he moves with purpose to the cathedral exit where he says to the rest of the party, "The whippoorwills that graced the service are a sign of Pharasma's approval. Given such a sign, she will surely accept Chad into her eternal service where he will help guide the souls of the deceased to their final rests. It is up to us to remember him with joy and avenge him with passion." As he finishes his face becomes focused and hard, a fearsome look in his eyes as he stares into the late afternoon sky. "I think we should return to the ruins tomorrow, after healing tonight. In the meanwhile, we should find Miss Kendra and get something to eat. "Who else is interested in returning to the Laughing Demon for a bite and drink?"

Elian approaches Kristoph, and a scowl of consternation splits his features for a moment. He regains command of his demeanor, smiles half-heartedly and responds, I will be glad to join you... friend. Chad's selfless valor is most certainly worth of memorial; may Pharasma guide his soul to the eternal rest. He looks towards the altar, and makes an attempt to mimic the spiral hand motion Chad made in greeting, before turning to follow the paladin from the chapel.

Kristoph smiles at Elian. "The spiral represents the way souls of the dead from all over the planes move through the Astral to Pharasma's Bone Spire. The spire rises from the outer sphere of the planes impossibly high into the center. There Pharasma judges the souls of all, impassionately, and directs the souls of the good to peace and comfort and those of the damned to their just torments. Her faithful are often chosen to help serve her as aids. I suspect Chad could earn such an honor," he says, calmly. "When making the symbol of the spiral you start at the center of your torso and move your fist clockwise, like this," he demonstrates slowly with his hand in a fist, palm towards his breast. "Would you like to learn more about the faith? My duties usually involve defending it, not proselytizing, but I am would enjoy a change of pace..."
