The dropship's high hum resonates through the hull, annoying the ever lovin' warp out of Captain Graves.

"All right Fourth Company, we're dropping in guns blazing. Get your meltas hot and your pants on!

The one and only Lieutenant Dirk, often jokingly called "Boom", relays the same command:

'chutes on, weapons ready! We've got last position!

Everyone describe what those orders entail to your character, but they should all have one common element: equipping gravity chutes for the incoming drop. After everyone's posted what they're doing, shenanigans shall commence!

Merlin and Sun were restlessly strapping in their grav chutes. The heavy specialist was eagerly awaiting for the next operation to start, even his weapon's machine spirit had been having a hair trigger lately in anticipation. He'd been waiting weeks to hull another piece of armor but first he has to go through the labor of managing a torso sized missile launcher along with having to make a grave chute drop.

"A twitch, two techpriests, and us. Talk about a ticking time bomb.", Merlin remarked while trying to secure his straps

Sun Kai Shek shrugged, "I'll say, hopefully we just go off in someplace useful."

"The bitch is too finicky, one slip and I'll be falling like a stone.",Merlin puffed. The whole affair with the heavy weapon was more laborious than he had thought. It took him a while to get his things secure, "The girl's a damn liability sometimes. I should have you carry her."

"Not a chance." Sun said, "If there's going to be a pack mule in this team it's going to be you." She got her things in place and hooked the two of them up, "Heavy Support Team ready!"

Sitting by herself, a little away from the grouping of blunted minds that was part of her new squad, Maelia was muttering prayers and benedictions to the God-Emperor. Both to keep her safe from any warp-beasts trying to attack her mind and hopefully not blow up everything in a 1-mile radius... again...

Kolan was sitting across from Maelia, armed and ready... to both fight like any regular guardsman, but also to do his REAL job and keep an eye on Maelia and make sure she doesn't loose control.

Nathin grabs his meltagun from its customary spot, strapped to his back, and checks that the fuel canister is securely attached before flipping the power switch and listening for the tell-tale hum of the ignition chamber heating up before flipping the weapon's sling over his shoulder and allowing the prepped meltagun to hang at his side. "Wintre you got the launcher?" he asks as he straps on his grav chute.

"Yeah boss, prepped and loaded." Trooper Wintre Trask responds from behind him as she also straps on her chute.

"Good, I want to be ready for anything as soon as we hit the ground." Nathin replies. He hates drops, the only method of insertion he hates more is a beach assault, luckily he's only had to do one of those before.

Katherine was a nervous wreck. Between bursts of unintelligible Binary, she repeatedly checked everything around her several times. Was her servitor functioning properly? How about its chute? And her own? Was her lasgun loaded properly? Slowly calming herself, she went from person to person, asking if they required any last second assistance before taking up a position beside her sibling.

Katelyn smiled at her sister, speaking in binary, "Come Katyusha, all will be well. Soon enough, we'll be falling to our deaths. It'll be great." At that she grinned, her servo-arm wiggling in the air above her head. "Just let me know if you need a push in the right direction." She had already checked over her equipment twice, and she had let her sister check over it twice as well. It calmed her down a little sometimes, it didn't seem to have worked this time, "You've already checked over everyone's equipment, plus you're speaking to them in Binary. Before you know it, they'll have some sort of odd nickname they like to come up with. It'll be fine.

The steady rocking of the dropship nauseated Merlin, he wasn't used to these kinds of insertions, "What exactly are we expecting at the LZ sir? It's gotta be pretty hot on the ground for us to drop straight into the fight."

Boom laughed at Merlin's question.

"Come on Trooper Crasse! We're expecting the only thing they call us for: enemy armor!"

However, he unexpectedly straightened his face as he leaned in and spoke more softly: "The truth is we have zero intel on what's going on down there. That's why ya'll're going in last. We're to assume everything on the ground in dangerous unless it identifies as friendly. The local PDF has given zero comms as to their status, and the rumors are bad. So keep a weather eye on those cogs and the twitch, you get me?

And with that, a green light turns on and he suddenly shouts at you: "Go, go, go!" and the squad jumps into the empty sky.

Everyone roll three +0 Agility Tests or three +10 Tech-Use or three +20 Operate (Aeronautica). You're looking for at least one DoS. Two gets your guys descending in formation. Three has you fall... in style.

The squad easily falls into their sync'd drop, grav chutes bringing them close and on target. As you fall, you can see the rest of the company dropping in front of you, and when you look up you see the orbital dropship, with 1st Company still aboard, heading towards a different LZ to set up regimental HQ.

Everything's fine. Or it was until you hear the Captain in your ear shouting:

We've got a flyer incoming! Drop it!"

You guys fell with such great style that you don't need to roll to change your position. You can see the flyer, and you have enough time try and identify with an easy Common Lore (+20) test to whichever you think applicable.

The hail of las-fire hit the incoming Vendetta with the fury of a hailstorm, putting holes into the armored cockpit and wings, yet it flew on.

However, Maelia's bio-lightning smote upon it, raking across its primary body and silhouetting it in the sky. However, an unexpected gust of wind combined with the passing flyer's slipstream to know Maelia out of the fight.

As if to add injury to injury, Merlin's krak missile smashed right into a primary engine, blowing it completely off and taking depowering half the flyer's armament.

After a few moments of struggling to stay aloft, the Vendetta began the inevitable shift from menacing threat to a nosediving neutralized notch on Merlin's wall.

The Captain's voice is in your ear again: "Hell of a shot son. We'll be at the LZ setting up regimental HQ. I don't like to jump to conclusions, but the locals might be corrupted. New standing orders: If a person call themselves friendly, take them alive. If it's armor, disable it and take the crew into custody for interrogation. Go get 'em!"

"Look's like Trooper Kish's light show had some side effects attached to it. The vendetta shot her off course and she seems to be struggling to keep her grav chute in check like a certain squadmate from earlier." Sun skidded idly by watching the psyker twist in the air.

"What do you want me to do about it? Catch her?"

"If we don't assist she would probably break her head open on the rockcrete. It wouldn't look good on our record."

"Sounds like you want me to get hit in the face by a grav chute."

"I would but she may blow you up before that happens."

"No place in the guard for regret." Merlin sighed before charging out.

"No indeed." Sun says as she follows.

Despite Katherine's wild flapping, her sister Katelyn and Merlin easily maneuvered around Maelia and got the flailing psyker back on course.

The squad landed on top of a roof, likely a residential hab. Around them the rest of the company is setting up a base camp, complete with perimeter guard routines and improvised roadblocks. A nearby sergeant noticed the recently landed squad and brought them down to thunderous applause and cheering. Even Maelia received a a few congratulatory pats on the back, and the minor celebration continued a few moments more before dying down and everybody getting back to work.

Lieutenant Dirk approaches the squad and says, "Good shooting troopers! We've got a couple squads over at the crash site, that's where you're heading next. The locals are all locked inside their homes, but we've appropriated a couple of their ground cars to take you guys out there."

With a final grin, the lieutenant turns and gets back to shouting orders at the gathered Guardsmen.

Operate: Ground is appropriate, at a +20 test. No need for a Navigate since you guys already know where you're going.

Merlin and Sun were back from the armory sporting bemused looks, both were carrying crates, the heavy gunner had the far bulkier one, "Oh golly gee munitorium can't be bothered to get requests right all the time, there always has to be a problem. Just wanted a set of magnoculars, Emperor forbid they actually send something useful to the front line, that'll just give the scribes an aneurysm." He tosses up the crate onto the back of the transport sending the entrenching tools clattering into the compartment, "For when we dig for treasure. Can't let supplies go to waste, that's grounds for execution." He tosses one E-tool up and locks it into his pack, probably has better range than his knife anyway.

Merlin then takes the other smaller crate from Sun and opens it up,"Alas logistics always finds a way to win back my heart. About ten frags and ten smokes here. Take what you need, I have a feeling we're going to be putting this stuff to use very soon." He personally takes two frag grenades, loading one into his launcher.

Nathin disconnects the fuel canister from his meltagun and instead hooks it up to the hose on his newly acquired backpack fuel resevoir. He then clips the meltagun onto the backpack's mounting point before hefting the entire thing into the front seat of their assigned vehicle before climbing in behind the wheel.

"So, what's the verdict?" He asks the tech-priest poking around in the engine compartment while Wintre climbs in next to him, manuvering the meltagun and backpack to rest between them. "Will she run?"

With a surprising roar, the newly made technical's engine came to life and Nathin spurs it into motion. The 25 km drive out to the crashed Vendetta is uneventful, strangely enough. The former flyer is in five big, still smoldering pieces, and when the squad arrives they see their companion squads arguing over what to do with the captured pilot and co-pilot. Both are wounded slightly and singed from the crash, but are conscious and fearful. Their uniforms are, or perhaps more accurately were, white, and both have an insignia of a green triangle on a purple field.

The sergeants notice the squad's technical (loud engines being what they are) and walk over. You recognize them both as Sergeants Raker, a pair of brothers who had risen to command their own squads, known as "Old" and "Young" Raker respectively despite the difference in their ages only being about two and a half years.

Old Raker reports first:
"Evenin'. As you can well see, that Vendetta ya'll splashed is in five great big chunks. We're pretty sure most of the las-cannons are salvageable, the engines're completely separated from the power, and there's some fancy targeting computers up in the cockpit area."

In a display of brotherly efficiency, Young Raker gives his report:
"Yeah, we got the pilots out of that cockpit right quick, but we had to douse it all 'cause it was on fire at the time, so we don't really know if those computers still work. The pilot's ain't talking to us, and we don't know what to do with 'em because normally people don't survive when we blow up their armor. Must've gotten lucky that they were flying instead of driving, yeah?"

Obviously there's the heavy weapons to be taken in, the cockpit investigated for new tech, and the pilots to interrogate. I suppose you could also order the engines and power brought in. Theoretically I suppose you could rig up some stuff with those pieces.

Vatikoto
2014-04-30, 12:48 AM
Merlin manned the stubber playfully spinning around in it's swivel, "Well if it isn't Raker and Raker, I'd keep a lookout if I were you. These guys are likely going to have friends that are coming to get them. I also advise backing up a few dozen meters, our psyker has a tendency to do some crazy warp shlte without telling anyone. Ain't that right Maela?"

Hemnon
2014-04-30, 07:32 AM
Maelia headed towards what would be the holding-cells and slowly approached the guards there, making sure not to sneak up on them. "Excuse me, i hear you're unable to get anything out of those two pilots... well, i could try and Force them to talk, if you so wish." She said.
